Product Description
If you read Charles Bernstein s first book, "Film Music and Everything Else," this book should be a welcome sequel. It contains more thought-provoking and fun essays on the art of film music and about life in general. Some of the territory covered: What is a Classic?; Who has Good Taste?; Golden Opportunity; Spirituality in Music; Going Crazy; Are There Really "Wrong" Notes?; We All Need Support; A Word About Chaos (to mention just a few). As a bonus, this volume also features in-depth conversations between Mr. Bernstein and some of the greatest film composers of all time. ... Read more

Product Description
Drama. BLIND WITNESS brings together three libretti written in the early 1990s by poet Charles Bernstein for composer Ben Yarmolinsky. Bernstein & Yarmolinsky's trilogy combines vernacular American lyrics with vernacular social forms. 'Blind Witness News' uncannily mimics the format of the eleven o'clock evening news with segments for international and local news, weather, business news, and sports. Then, as now, war sets the dark undertone. 'The Subject'--at times elegiac, at times parodic--sets a psychoanalytic session to music. 'The Lenny Paschen Show' focuses on Lenny, the Kamikaze King of Comedy, a late night talk show host at the edge of his career, pushing his schtick to the limit. When 'Blind Witness News' was first performed in 1990, Allan Kozinn of The New York Times wrote: "Mr. Bernstein's libretto catches with near perfection the stock verbal moves--the forced laughter, empty banter, catch-phrases and cutesy segues--in which television news reports are cushioned." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Evolving Scope of Poets and Artists
Didi Menendez and her staff are testing new waters with this July 2010 Issue of Poets and Artists magazine.Restricting the contents to the work of artists and writers who live in South Florida opens a whole new way of looking at art - regionalism - and in this case the results include some outstanding work that deserves the attention Menendez garners on them.Three visual artists in particular deserve mention: Marcus Antonius Jansen paints distortions of reality so complex that it takes a puzzle solver's eye to find the core meaning: very beautiful work, this.Cesar Santos paints in the classical style but many of his paintings are informed by the fact that he immigrated from Cuba in 1995: one of his strongest paintings is 'After the Arrival', a bizarrely restricted Cuban raft on which the refugees approach the new land with mixed emotions.John Sanchez paints in the old master mode but elevates his content to utilize the strange vision of a camera lens. This is all fine work and worth the price of the magazine for these three artists' works alone.A Solid Issue.
