Candid and subtle, her poetry speaks with a distinctive, vigorous intelligence and satirical edge. This generous selection includes an introduction that sets her work in context, and provides notes on the text and suggestions for further reading.

Product Description
During the 19 years of her play-writing career, Aphra Behn had far more new plays staged than anyone else. This book is the first to examine all her theatrical work. It explains her often dominant place in the complex theatrical culture of Charles II's reign, her divided political sympathies, and her interests as a free-thinking intellectual. It also reveals her to be a brilliant theatrical practitioner who used the seen as richly and significantly as the spoken. ... Read more

Product Description
Aphra Behn was England's first professional woman writer, but her status as a major author has only recently become clear.Between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries Behn was denigrated for her "unwomanly" subject matter and intellectual immodesty. In the twentieth century she has been increasingly viewed as a leading dramatist of the Restoration and a founder of the English novel. This collection forms an important resource for those studying seventeenth century English literature and drama, and for those interested in the development of women's writing. ... Product Description

Ever since Virginia Woolf proclaimed that all women writers should place flowers on her grave, Aphra Behn has slowly become recognized as the first Englishwoman to earn her living by writing. In this first book-length critical work on Aphra Behn, a range of contributors explore the ways in which Behn is now entering the canon of English literature and examine the significance of her writing in the contexts of both seventeenth-century English literature and contemporary debates in critical feminist theory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Need to already have her poems
Aphra Behn was a female poet who is barely remembered today. A contemporary of Shakespeare and Marlowe. Reasonably well known in her time. Which was quite an achievement in the 1600s.

Stapleton tries to bring Behn's works back from the shades, to greater appreciation by us. He presents detailed critical analysis of the works, and compares them favourably to others by her male contemporaries. He assumes that you are already mostly familiar with her poems, and that you have access to them. The book is an analysis, not an anthology. ... Read more

Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. The titles here trace developments in mostly English-language works on painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and other disciplines. Instructional works on musical instruments, catalogs of art objects, comic operas, and more are also included.
