3-0 out of 5 stars The 1002 Arabian Night Story
I found this book in a list of 100 best fantasy stories. It's written in the style of the Arabian Nights. The characters are all pictures of weakness and evil, and come to a bad end. There is no one inspiring in the book, no one who rises above this cynical view of royal life to do the right thing. Also in then end the characters have not truely learned anything or taken responsibility for their own actions. It is an interestinng, but very cynical view of the world. ... Product Description

This engaging volume presents the complete texts of three of the most important—and historically popular—examples of the Oriental tale genre. Supporting contextual material includes samples of Orientalist writing from The Spectator, Johnson's Rambler, Goldsmith's Citizen of the World, and Edgeworth's complete tale "Murad the Unlucky," as well as a selection of modern critical essays.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Editor
Here are some features of this collection that readers might want to know about. It includes the original notes to *Vathek* (the 1816 version) and *The Giaour* and presents them as they were intended to be presented: in separate sections following each work. Editorial glosses and footnotes, on the other hand, are at the bottom of each page--my students, who don't like hunting for endnotes, tell me this makes a real difference for them. In addition to the three main works, *Three Oriental Tales* includes a sample from *The Arabian Nights* and Oriental tales from *The Spectator*, Johnson's *Rambler*, Goldsmith's *Citizen of the World* (Letter 33, an Orientalist send-up of Orientalism), and the complete text of Maria Edgeworth's "Murad the Unlucky."It also includes Francis Jeffrey's contemporary review of *The Giaour* and a set of recent critical responses to the tales, plus a chronology of literary Orientalism in Britain from the early translations of *The Arabian Nights* to Byron's death in 1824. ... Product Description
This biography documents the colourful life of William Beckford, who scandalized Victorian society by indulging in homoerotic and paedophile activities until the Tory administration exiled him. In his absence his nihilistic Arabian novel "Vathek" was pirated by a treacherous friend. Beckford spent his declining years in adventures abroad, and built a Gothic masterpiece, Fontwell Abbey, where he bathed in the rain with a sylph-like Albanian footman. Reared in exotic isolation, Beckford grew up obsessed with dark grottoes, towers and awful images of the living dead. His life was a tragicomedy of a wealthy bisexual, who invented a forgery of elegant half-truths invented in retirement after the young Disraeli had sent him a homerotic epic based on his career. The faked letters and dream encounters with celebrities have led to the term "composing for Mozart". ... Read more

How great was my astonishment some time after, on visiting Fonthill, at perceiving, suspended from the cul de lamp, the very crimson cord that once supported this precious vessel! The lamp had been hastily cut down, and the height of the remains of the cord from the floor was probably the reason of its preservation. ... Read more

Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Rich in titles on English life and social history, this collection spans the world as it was known to eighteenth-century historians and explorers. Titles include a wealth of travel accounts and diaries, histories of nations from throughout the world, and maps and charts of a world that was still being discovered. Students of the War of American Independence will find fascinating accounts from the British side of conflict.

This collection reveals the history of English common law and Empire law in a vastly changing world of British expansion. Dominating the legal field is the Commentaries of the Law of England by Sir William Blackstone, which first appeared in 1765. Reference works such as almanacs and catalogues continue to educate us by revealing the day-to-day workings of society.
