3-0 out of 5 stars Good in 2003 ... Dated in 2009
I picked this book up since it had a chapter on iptables however after reading more I found that this book is quite dated.Someone who is still running a 2.0 or 2.2 Linux kernel might get something out of it, but times have changed in the past 6 years!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pensacola LUG review book
The Linux Security Cookbook is a good hands-on guide to the major aspects of securing your Linux box. This book offers many quick reference guides to pieces of software for securing or testing your system and goes through many different means of fortifying your box including:
-controlling system access with firewalls
-monitoring your network
-using SSH and SSL
-intrusion detection systems
-authentication and cryptographic keys
-encrypting files and email messages
-system security probing

The recipes in this book allows administrators to learn quick and easy ways to secure their systems including over 150 ready-to-use scripts and configuration files without having to look up or research specific syntax.

This book is definitely a quick hands-on guide to securing and monitoring your system and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good source of guides and ready-to-use scripts and configurations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource on Linux security
At fewer than 300 pages, the initial size of the Linux Security Cookbook may seem to be meager to cover such a broad subject. But what the book lacks in size, it makes up in content.

While many security books may waste the reader's time by spending hundreds of pages on introductory subjects; chapter 1 of the Linux Security Cookbook goes straight into using and configuring Tripwire.

The book then goes into fundamental topics such as firewalling with iptables/ipchains, authentication, access control, file control, email security and more.

If you are interested in Linux security, this is a well-written and well-organized book, filled with valuable and timely information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for quick reference...
I read this book from cover to cover and consider it a great effort by the authors to cover many security issues related to not just Linux, but most *nix operating systems. Here's a chapter by chapter review of what I've observed in the book:

Chapter 1 - System Snapshots with Tripwire

I liked the discussion of Tripwire and its configuration options. The sections on "Ultra-Paranoid Integrity Checking" were great! A decent introduction to Tripwire and some of its features.

Chapter 2 - Firewalls with iptables and ipchains

The difference between "Drop versus Reject" targets was good. So many books have info on iptables, but none discusses these issues. Also the point made about dropping ICMP messages was good. Quick to learn and implement recipes presented in this chapter.

Chapter 3 - Restricting Access by Remote Users

Recipe 3.7 was very neat. Allowing users to access a service only by port-forwarding over ssh allows the administrator to restrict access by user names. A smart way of imposing restrictions!
Also, in recipe 3.9, I liked the authors' approach to finding if xinetd is compiled with libwrap support.

All recipes regarding tweaking xinetd were good. It isn't always possible to look at all the configurable options with xinetd, and the authors did a good job in mentioning a few useful options.

Chapter 4 - Authentication Techniques and Infrastructures

Quick tips with PAM, openssl and kerberos. I couldnt get some of the recipes to work on my machine, but got most openssl stuff to work.

Chapter 5 - Authorization Controls

I liked this chapter the best. The discussion on sudo was enlightening, and I was able to effectively tweak most recipes to my needs. The man page would never have provided me with such a good explanation. Thanks to the authors for this chapter.

Chapter 6 - Protecting Outgoing Network Connections

Two of these authors had written the snail book and I expected nothing less than a very useful recipe session on SSH. The most useful recipe here was setting up public key authentication between an openssh client and an ssh.com server and vice-versa. I had always wanted to do this but didnt have a clue until I read these recipes. All recipes have strong technical content and are well written. The recipe on running cron jobs with ssh was
amazing. The authors teach how to be creative, rather than merely
explaining facts and methodologies.

Chapter 7 - Protecting Files

I liked all recipes on GnuPG especially neat hacks like maintaining encrypted files with vim, encrypting backups etc..

Chapter 8 - Protecting Email

I tried out a few recipes and got them to work with my configuration. Pretty impressive stuff! The difference between SSL and STARTTLS daemons was very well explained. I havent seen a consolidated discussion on this topic thus far and was really happy to see things explained clearly in just one sidebar. I couldn't get the imap/ssl recipe working for my settings, inspite of spending quite some time. Perhaps a few screen-shots
made available via the website would've been of greatest help..

Chapter 9 - Testing and Monitoring

Recipes on Cracklib, using find for setuid/setgid files and the discussion on the 'find' command are very well written. Though this stuff has been mentioned in most security books/magazines, a consolidated treatment here is nice to note. nmap truly deserved the long section and I was able to learn a few facts I didnt know about nmap until now. The recipe on examining local network activities covered the best tools in business -
netstat, lsof and rpcinfo. Sniffing network traffic, using tcpdump, ethereal and dsniff provide a good refresher and ready-to-use recipes.

Overall, Linux Security Cookbook is a very useful book for quick
reference. It covers a wide range of security topics and issues related to not just Linux but most Unices. The recipes provided here are well written and ready to use. I have found many tips related to sudo, SSH, xinetd, encryption and network security extremely useful. Full credit to the authors for bringing out such a comprehensive book on Linux Security.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to par
I've been reading "Linux Security Cookbook".I fully understandthe goal of this book is to provide lots of little bits of wisdom, not a full fledged security book.I think that's pretty cool.HoweverI'm finding that a lot of the recipies, if you will, are either notwell explained, the equivalent of reading a real cookbook witohutknowing what it means ot 'fold the blueberries into the batter'.Theycould easily have spent more time explaining things so we didn't needto go read/re-reading the man pages just to understand the book.

Description:
The Cape Roberts Project recovered over 1500 m of coastal glaciomarine sediments of Oligocene and Early Miocene age off the Ross Sea margin of Antarctica. The strata are characterised by cyclic repetition of facies in a glaciomarine setting, and are interpreted to be a record of glacial-interglacial episodes involving significant changes in eustatic sea level on Milankovitch frequencies. We have undertaken a detailed study of pollen and spores (miospores) from an Early Oligocene (31 Ma), and a Late Oligocene (24 Ma) cycle. Although miospores are sparse in the core, averaging only ~1 grain per gram of sediment processed, over 1200 Cenozoic miospores were recovered for this study. Previous studies of miospores from Ross Sea sediments have encountered problems differentiating between reworked and in situ palynomorphs. Here, only samples containing a low relative abundance of an Eocene dinoflagellate cyst assemblage (the Transantarctic Flora) have been used to infer the contemporaneous Oligocene miospore flora. The flora of the Early Oligocene cycle is dominated by three species of Nothofagidites, and four types of Podocarpidites. The assemblage from the Upper Oligocene cycle is also dominated by Nothofagidites and Podocarpidites, but with the addition of two distinctive taxa, an angiosperm pollen and a bryophyte spore. Notwithstanding these additions, there is a slight decrease in floral diversity between the two cycles. While this study confirms that some floristic changes did occur between Early and Late Oligocene time on the Victoria Land coast, the present data suggest that the changes were not extensive. It is likely that the vegetation of both cycles was a low diversity scrub of low stature, consisting of mainly Nothofagus, podocarps, and bryophytes. Modern analogues suggest that this vegetation was growing in a climate significantly warmer (Mean Summer Monthly Temperature 4-12 ^oC) than is found on the present day Victoria Land (MSMT -5 ^oC), although colder that the temperate climate suggested by the diverse flora found in Ross Sea sediments of Eocene age. ... Description:
Two marine palynomorph assemblages recovered from two glacio-eustatic sedimentary cycles from the Cape Roberts Project (CRP), which recovered over 1500 m of Oligocene and Miocene strata from the western margin of the Victoria Land Basin, are investigated. We present results from one cycle dated as early Oligocene and the other dated as late Oligocene. Modest numbers of marine palynomorphs were recovered, with an average abundance of 56 specimens per gram. The assemblages recovered from both cycles are broadly similar, and dominated by acritarchs and the phycoma of prasinophyte algae. These include Leiosphaeridia sp. 2, Leiosphaeridia sp. 3, and the prasinophyte alga, Cymatiosphaera sp. 2. In detail, however, the lower Oligocene assemblage is different from that of the upper Oligocene. The lower Oligocene cycle includes Impagidinium cf. dispertium and Impagidinium cf. elegans. Cymatiosphaera sp. 6 and Pyxidinopsis sp. are abundant. The upper Oligocene cycle is characterized by an absence of Cymatiosphaera (?) invaganata, Cymatiosphaera sp. 8, and Pterospermella sp. A. It has very low numbers of Acritarch sp. b, Impagidinium and Pyxidinopsis. It contains Tasmanites sp. and Brigantedinium pynei, and it has higher abundances of Lejeunecysta sp. 1 and Sigmopollis than the lower Oligocene cycle. The environmental interpretations of the CRP core from other workers using sedimentological and paleontological indicators are used to infer environmental conditions that are likely to have influenced the marine palynomorph assemblages. Paleontological and sedimentological analysis suggests that both cycles were deposited in cold conditions, with sea ice and melt water influence, although the upper Oligocene assemblage is inferred to have existed in colder marine conditions, with more prolonged sea ice cover and less associated fresh water input than the assemblage of early Oligocene times. The application of modern analogues for some of the marine palynomorph taxa identified suggest the presence of sea ice, and occasionally lowered salinity in both cycles. This is broadly consistent with the findings of the other paleoenvironmental studies on the CRP cores. ... Read more

Product Description
Global health problems require global solutions, and public-private partnerships are increasingly called upon to provide these solutions. Such partnerships involve private corporations in collaboration with governments, international agencies, and nongovernmental organizations. They can be very productive, but they also bring their own problems. This volume examines the organizational and ethical challenges of partnerships and suggests ways to address them. How do organizations with different values, interests, and world-views come together to resolve critical public health issues? How are shared objectives and shared values created within a partnership? How are relationships of trust fostered and sustained in the face of the inevitable conflicts, uncertainties, and risks of partnership? This book focuses on public-private partnerships that seek to expand the use of specific products to improve health conditions in poor countries. The volume includes case studies of partnerships involving specific diseases such as trachoma and river blindness, international organizations such as the World Health Organization, multinational pharmaceutical companies, and products such as medicines and vaccines. Individual chapters draw lessons from successful partnerships as well as troubled ones in order to help guide efforts to reduce global health disparities. ... Read more

Product Description
Drawing people is more than just accurately capturing the anatomy and details of the subject. Artists that capture the soul of the model breathe life into the artwork by expressing a mood, idea or emotion that cannot be captured by accurate rendering alone. Life Drawing will give the reader all the tools necessary to draw people accurately and expressively, thus setting it apart from books that teach technique only. A variety of materials (nupastel, charcoal and graphite) will be used to give the intermediate artist a range of options to choose what works best for the subject of each drawing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Life Drawing by Robert Barrett
I draw primarily with graphite pencils and charcoal, and only rarely use pastels (I guess I just like the basic tonal qualities of a single medium).Robert Barrett includes the use of Nupastel in "Life Drawing," and it brings a new dimension to figure drawing, and actually gives a more immediate sense of "lfe" to his pieces.

Robert Barrett's instructions are clear and very "hands-on," and his approach to the difficult expression of drapery is excellent.

Robert Barrett's "Life Drawing" is a must for students and more advanced artists.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work on constructive figure drawing
Barrett demonstrates and describes his approach to constructive figure drawing from start to finish. The book also covers the usual topics of proportions, anatomy, gesture, shading, materials, etc.Barrett's constructive approach to figure drawing is similar in several respects to that outlined in Walt Reed'sThe Figure: The Classic Approach to Drawing & Construction. However, Barrett takes his drawings to a higher level of refinement, realism, atmosphere and detail.Civardi and others have noted that constructive drawing is just one of several approaches to figure drawing. If it's the method that you want to use, then this could be the book you are looking for.If you have other approaches in mind, you might consider Civardi Drawing The Female Nude, The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing: A Contemporary Perspective on the Classical Tradition or Sheppard Realistic Figure Drawing, or Andrews Interpreting the Figure in Watercolor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best buy art instruction in figure drawing
Barretts book on portraying the figure is the best one I have found so far (and I have been through most of them). Not that the others aren't good or that I would ever suggest anyone choose only one book as a guide. There are many different approaches to drawing the figure, and different people profit from different techniques.
This book integrated the methods I had learned from others in a way that worked for me.I got that breakthrough feeling the first time I tried it.As a companion book, I would recommend The Artists Complete Guide to Drawing the Head by William L. Maughan.
The Artist's Complete Guide to Drawing the Head

4-0 out of 5 stars getting started
This well presented book develops clear chapters which demonstrate how to study figure drawing from a wide variety of approaches. It does not limit to one particular procedure but offers many ways to get into the subject, all of which it demonstrates via very fine drawings/sketches. Very strong on structural approaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice drawings and direction
Good book to practice life drawings in. Excellent instruction or you can just try and copy the well drawn directions. ... Read more
