From the supplier: Djuna Barnes revised 'Nightwood' many times during the process of trying to find a publisher for the novel. The process of revision and the motives that prompted it are clues about Barnes as a novelist. Barnes, in her letters to Emily Coleman, states that she aims for a poetic representation of the life of the spirit and so her novel will not have elements of popular realism. Barnes strove to represent the truth of life's experience based on her own past and sexuality.

From the supplier: The Djuna Barnes Collection at the McKeldin Library has poems that Barnes was working on in the last four decades of her life. The poems are inconsistent in quality. The ones that are good can be published as a slim volume by an editor who can discern a way to bring them together. Barnes was fascinated with themes such as death and regeneration during the years in which she was fighting against growing illness. She was moving away from the obscure language of 'The Antiphon' to a more straightforward expression.

From the supplier: Djuna Barnes's 1928 book, 'Ladies Almanack,' was written in a cultural context where increasing number of career women were creating female bonds other than the traditional mother-daughter relationship. Sexology and psychoanalysis, which were attempts to regulate female sexuality, were symptomatic of society's reaction. Barnes's book was a continuation of society's reaction and an intervention into that reaction. 'Ladies Almanack' was an examination of the process of lesbian 'reproduction.' Barnes can be accused of being reductionist in her treatment of the link between class and lesbianism.

From the supplier: Djuna Barnes's changing stance in her works has raised questions about her sexual orientation and the current reading of her as a bisexual writer is valid because her works lend themselves to such an interpretation. Barnes has resisted categorizations by blurring traditional boundaries and her works are evidence of her attempts to portray non-traditional eroticism. However, she has been ambivalent in her treatment of the subject and the debate about whether 'Ladies Almanack' celebrates or attacks lesbianism suggests the variety of possible interpretations.

From the supplier: Analysis of the unusual relationship of Djuna Barnes and Charles Henri Ford and the differences in their sexual economies and safeties help in understanding Barnes's 'Behind the Heart' written for Ford. The emendation of 'boy' to 'groom' in the story takes on additional meaning in the context of their personal lives and relationships. The subtle exploration of erotic intimacy is in keeping with the 'scopophilia,' mutual pleasure in looking, revealed in their correspondence.

From the supplier: Djuna Barnes's 'The Terrorists,' one of her newspaper tales of 1913-19, is a satiric examination of gender and class structures. The formally complex story of Pilaat Korb and 'Pilaat's wife' apparently adheres to patriarchal stereotypes by giving the man a name, giving him longer speeches and allowing him first appearance in the tale. In contrast, the woman is designated only by her role as a wife and there is very little analysis of her ideas. However, Barnes subverts the stereotype and carves a feminine space by techniques such as closing the story with the woman's thoughts.
