Product Description
Aubrey's Brief Lives, those racy portraits of the great figures of 17th-century England, stand alongside Pepys's diary as a vivid evocation of the period. John Aubrey was born in 1626, the son of a Wiltshire squire; he never completed his education at Oxford or at the Middle Temple, and when he inherited the family estate at the age of twenty-six he found it encumbered with debt. He finally went bankrupt in the 1670s, and from then on led a sociable, rootless existence at the houses of friends, pursuing the antiquarian studies which had always obsessed him.At his death in 1697 he left a mass of notes and manuscripts, among them the material for Brief Lives. He never managed to put even a single life into logical order; all we have are the raw materials, his jumbled and confused notebooks containing an irresistible combination of historical detail and inconsequential but revealing observations -- tumultuously as they occurred to my thoughts' -- that bring his subjects so vividly to life. Richard Barber introduces Aubrey and his world, and tells how the Lives came into being; he provides a full edition in modern spelling, reproducing as closely as possible what Aubrey wrote, in a version that will allow many new readers to enjoy this lively, eccentric masterpiece. ... Chapters: Principals of New Inn Hall, Oxford, William Blackstone, Robert Chambers, William Aubrey, John Wigan, John Antony Cramer, John Lamphire, Robert Lougher, David Lewis. Excerpt: Sir William Blackstone (10 July 1723 14 February 1780) was an English judge, jurist and professor who produced the historical and analytic treatise on the common law entitled Commentaries on the Laws of England, first published in four volumes over 17651769. It had an extraordinary success, reportedly bringing the author £14,000, and still remains an important source on classical views of the common law and its principles. He received his education at Charterhouse School and at Pembroke College, Oxford. In 1743 he was elected fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and was called to the bar as a barrister at the Middle Temple in 1746. After practicing in the courts of Westminster for several years without great success, in 1753 he retired to Oxford where he launched a pioneering private lecture course on the laws and government of England (not then taught at either English university). In 1758 he was elected unopposed to the new chair in English Law endowed by the will of Charles Viner (who had died in 1756), delivering his first lecture as foundation Vinerian Professor on 25 October 1758. In 1761 Blackstone was appointed Principal of New Inn Hall (now St. Peter's College, Oxford), a position which he held until 1766. Blackstone lived at Priory Place (later Castle Priory) in Wallingford, and is buried at St Peter's Church in the town. In 1761 Blackstone won election as a Member of Parliament for Hindon and received a patent of precedence at the bar (equivalent to the rank of king's counsel). Blackstone's "political views were those of the Old Whigs and his ideals were those... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=221256 ... Read more

JOHN AUBREY, the subject of this brief notice, was born at Easton Pierse, (Parish of Kington,) in Wiltshire, on the 12th of March, 1626; and not on the 3rd of November in that year, as stated by some of his biographers. He was the eldest son of Richard Aubrey, Esq. of Burleton, Herefordshire, and Broad Chalk, Wiltshire. Being, according to his own statement, "very weak, and like to dye," he was baptized on the day of his birth, as appears by the Register of Kington. At an early age (1633) he was sent to the Grammar School at Yatton Keynel, and in the following year he was placed under the tuition of Mr. Robert Latimer, the preceptor of Hobbes, a man then far advanced in years. On the 2nd of May, 1642, being then sixteen years of age, Aubrey was entered a gentleman commoner of Trinity College, Oxford, where he appears to have applied himself closely to study. He however cherished a strong predilection for English History and Antiquities, which was fostered and encouraged at this time by the appearance of the "Monasticon Anglicanum", to which he contributed a plate of Osney Abbey, an ancient ruin near Oxford, entirely destroyed in the Civil Wars. On the 16th of April, 1646, Aubrey was admitted a student of the Middle Temple, but the death of his father shortly after, leaving him heir to estates in Wiltshire, Surrey, Herefordshire, Brecknockshire and Monmouthshire, obliged him to relinquish his studies and look to his inheritance, which was involved in several law suits." ...
