SIR EDWIN ARNOLD, "LIGHT OF ASIA"

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
A noble effort in the attempt to bring Buddhist thought into western minds of the 19th century.A lovely tome.

5-0 out of 5 stars a masterpiece
This book is a masterpiece written by Edwin Arnold, viewed through an "Asian's" perspective. He writes this book with a poetic and beautifully descriptive language portraying the life and times of Buddha, which stimulates your mind's imagination. His ability to capture the views of Asian thought and the story of Buddha's life is wonderful. This is a book to read slowly, and with a relaxed state of mind, to fully enjoy and absorb the impact of Arnold's writing.A great book for anyone who wants to expand their literary boundaries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such books make life worth living. A master piece.
It is a narration of the Life and Teachings of Buddha written by divine inspiration by Edwin Arnold. Rev Angarica the founder of Mahabodhi Society was deeply inspired by this book whereafter he took the Buddhist Robes. I have read the book several times and propose to read it many more times. Each reading elevates you some what. Any one who wants the book for free may contact me at

5-0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC
I find it so sad that so few people have read or reviewed this masterpiece. I'm sorry to say it, but if it was on Christianity or the life of Christ the response would have been very different and this kind ofwriting would have been equated with the likes of "ParadiseLost." I am not a Buddhist, but I was deeply moved by the power andbeauty of "Light of Asia." It follows the life of the Buddha, whowas born in Dambadiva, India about 2500 years ago, to the royal family, butleft the comforts of his life and all worldly possessions to persue themeaning of life; and gives us a vibrant picture of this great teacher andhis teachings, rendered in beautiful verse. An excellent way to find outmore about Buddhism. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this version! Its the best ...
This version of the Bhagavad-Gita is - in my oppinion - the most beautiful excisting version in English. I have read many others, and eventhough the basic content is the same, this version is much more poetic, much more interesting to read, -and it makes much more sense! It is (my personal oppinion) most likely written by a person of great faith. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reverential celebration of morality.
This poem contains many lines of ineffable beauty and wisdom rendered understandable to western minds by Arnold's heroic efforts.

The book struck me as one of priceless worth. The impression has ever since been growing on mewith the result that I regard it today as the book par excellence for theknowledge of Truth. It has afforded me invaluable help in moments ofgloom.I have read almost all the English translations of it(THE BHAGAVADGITA), and I regard Sir Edwin Arnold's as the best.He has been faithfulto the test, and yet it does not read like a translation. ... Product Description
The 1899 lynching of Sam Hose in Newnan, Georgia, was one of the earliest and most gruesome events in a tragic chapter of U.S. history. Hose was a black laborer accused of killing Alfred Cranford, a white farmer, and raping his wife. The national media closely followed the manhunt and Hose's capture. An armed mob intercepted Hose's Atlanta-bound train and took the prisoner back to Newnan. There, in front of a large gathering on a Sunday afternoon, Hose was mutilated and set on fire. His body was dismembered and pieces of it were kept by souvenir hunters.

Born and raised twenty miles from Newnan, Edwin T. Arnold was troubled and fascinated by the fact that this horrific chain of events had been largely shut out of local public memory. In "What Virtue There Is in Fire," Arnold offers the first in-depth examination of the lynching of Sam Hose.

Arnold analyzes newspapers, letters, and speeches to understand reactions to this brutal incident, without trying to resolve the still-disputed facts of the crime. Firsthand accounts were often contradictory, and portrayals of Hose differed starkly--from "black beast" to innocent martyr. Arnold traces how different groups interpreted and co-opted the story for their own purposes through the years. Reflecting on recent efforts to remember the lynching of Sam Hose, Arnold offers the portrait of a place still trying to reconcile itself, a century later, to its painful past. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "What virtue there is in Fire"
A deeply researched, unflinching account of the notorious Sam Hose lynching and its lasting repercussions. Prof. Arnold's remarkable book is an essential addition to the harrowing literature of lynching. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars how Southern culture worked to allow for racial lynchings
The horrific 1899 murder of Sam Hose in Georgia by a white mob for allegedly killing a white farmer and raping his wife is the jumping off point for this look at the segregated Southern culture of the time where such incidents were not uncommon. Steeped in the history of Southern culture as a professor of English at Appalachian State U., author of nine books on Southern literature, and editor of the Faulkner Journal, Arnold is especially attuned to the workings of the late 19th century Southern society. His book is not a sensationalistic rendering of the notorious incident, as in a popular true-crime book for example. It is a perspicacious, detailed sociological study of the conditions and forces of the Southern culture and relationships between blacks and whites.

The author's aim is not to judge, shame, or moralize--but to understand how such a horrific incident and other similar atrocities could happen so often with the local Southern society seeming to take them in stride and so readily and easily return to seeming normalcy. Varied newspaper articles on the Hose torture and lynching and other lynchings account for much of the research for and content of the book. In seeking this understanding, Arnold analyzes the social structure and profiles prominent individuals such as instigators and sheriffs and other public officials on opposing sides of the contest between law and vigilantism. While the local society dominated by whites could appear to return to normalcy, Arnold probes deep senses of uneasiness, hollow denials of responsibility by individuals and communities, and attempts at cover-ups which attest to feelings of guilt and led eventually to a changed culture where such incidents were acknowledged as the inexcusable atrocities they were. This investigative reporting frame of mind and aim of getting the facts and progress of the story right makes this work particularly engaging.

4-0 out of 5 stars Before there was John Carter
This little story, over a hundred years old now, tells a swashbuckling tale of adventure in a distant and improbable world. Swept away by a magic carpet (!), Lt. Gulliver Jones arrives on Mars. He first lands among pretty lotus-eaters, an indolent society that seems to live for its simple pleasures and complex wines, with a different drug for each kind of bliss the drinker might pursue. Soon, however, he's off on a quest, down the river of death, into sacred temples, and finally into the land of the savages that prey on the gentler folk of this land. Arnold's languge tends toward the archaic - it was written in 1905, after all - and his plots tend to hang on wild coincidence as much as on the unexplained. Still, if you want some silly, glamorous, and chaste adventure, this could be just what you want.

If parts of Arnold's story sound familiar, well, they should. Edgar Rice Burroughs lifted parts of the story wholesale, according to Richard Lupoff's preface, for use in his Mars series. In turn, Arnold seems to have imitated the Eloi of H.G. Wells's The Time Machine. This story provides a remarkable link in the chain of ideas that leads from and to better-known works.

You don't have to be a literary historian to enjoy this book, though. It stands on its own as a pleasant bit of fantasy fluff.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pioneer Work of Cassic SciFi
This novel is the first book I purchased. In 1961 I bought this pulp story from a used book store for a dime. Its cover price was 40 cents. But - it was such a great read that it sold me on SciFi forever. After my introduction to Lieutenant Gulliver Jones (its orignial title) between these covers, I went on to read Heinlein, and then Clark, Asimov and all the other's who came long after Edwin Arnold. The book reads with the all the classic Victorian flavor of Wells and Verne, but it has a real story embedded inside and is far enough removed from the stilted culture of the turn of the 20th century, that it allows even a 21st century reader to suspend belief enough to enjoy the magic of Mars as seen through the eyes of a culture far removed from the Martian desert we now know and can see unfolding before our eyes each day.For the connoisseur of classic SciFi, this is a must to read and appreciate. The old Ace paperback now sits enshrined in a shadow box frame beside my desk.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Pioneer Work of Science Fantasy
Edwin Lester Arnold (1875-1939) was for most of this century more famous for his "Phra the Phoenician" than for "Gulliver Jones," published in London in 1905. The stir over "Gulliver Jones" began over thirty years ago when striking similarities between his work and that of Edgar Rice Burroughs' own Mars series of books (begun in 1911) were finally noticed. It is entirely possible that Burroughs had never heard of Arnold or his book. At any rate, Arnold's work stands as a strange, unsung bridge between the Jules Verne/H.G. Wells style of science fiction of his day and the heroic science fantasy to be found in pulp fiction, comic-strips, and movies later in the twentieth century. The book's central figure is Gulliver Jones, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. Happening upon a flying carpet in New York City, he is whisked away to Mars, which is inhabited by characters very reminiscient of Well's "The Time Machine." He falls in love with the vapid but lovely Princess Heru just in time to see her handed over to the king of the Hither people (who are Haggard-style Africans thinly disguised as Martians). The rest of the novel involves his haphazard rescue of her via a voyage up an icy river of death and beyond. "Lieutenant Gulliver Jones: His Vacation" is a silly, dated book which is must reading for students of science fiction in this century, and for anyone in search of a good yarn. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The esteemed, poetic classic translation in a pocket edition
The "Song Celestial" is Sir Edwin Arnold's beautiful rendering of India's most beloved spiritual text, The Bhagavad Gita, and has been kept in print by the press of Yogananda's Self-Realization Fellowship. This is a convenient, pocket-size hardback that is a joy to read from whenever you have a free moment.

"The words of Lord Krishna to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita are at once a profound scripture on the science of Yoga (union with God) and a textbook for everyday living. The student is led step by step with Arjuna from the mortal consciousness of spiritual doubt and weakheartedness to divine attunement and inner resolve. The timeless anduniversal message of the Gita is all-encompassing in its expresssion of truth. The Gita teaches man his rightful duty in life, and how to discharge it with the dispassion that avoids pain and nurtures wisdom and success."--Paramahansa Yogananda (from book jacket)

Regarding the style of translation, Sir Edwin explains in his preface:"The Sanskrit original is written in the Anushtubh meter, which cannot be successfully reproduced for Western ears.I have therefore cast it into our flexible blank verse, changing into lyrical measures where the text itself similarly breaks. For the most part, I believe the sense to be faithfully preserved..."

One definite quibble about the translation is made explicit in Yogananda's autobiography where he notes that virtually *every* translator of The Gita into English mistakes Krishna as instructing his disciples to meditate with the gaze focused on "the tip of the nose."Yogananda points out that the Sanskrit "nasikagam" actually means "source" or "root" of the nose -- a reference to *the point between the eyebrows* - the "spiritual eye".For an esoterically sophisticated appreciation of such subtle (but vital) translation issues, you may want to turn to Yogananda's illumined commentary on the Gita:"God Talks with Arjuna." This is one of the most beautiful renderings of the story of Gautama Buddha and Jayadeva's descriptions of the Lord Krishna. The Light of Asia is the story of Siddhartha, Gautama Buddha, told in the style of the great epics, both Greek and Indian. Rich with the imagery and idiom of India, it is yet a western work - alluding to the story of Christ, clearly told for a western audience. Simply enthralling. ... Read more
