An interdisciplinary and international consideration of 'the contemporary'
This challenging and engaging book does not claim to be 'about' poetics or about a systematic theory or doctrine of poetry. Rather, it offers a collection of critical essays that aim 'to broadly delineate a possible poetics of the contemporary.'

Editor Louis Armand is himself a poet, and directs the InterCultural Studies program at the Philosophy Faculty of Charles University, Prague. The international and interdisciplinary set of contributors includes Alan Sondheim, Bruce Andrews, Charles Bernstein, Darren Tofts, Donald F. Theall, Gregory L. Ulmer, Keston Sutherland, Kevin Nolan, Marjorie Perloff, and Steve Mccaffery, among others.

The term 'contemporary poetics' as it is used in this volume, Armand writes, "rests neither in the delineation of a specific period or epoch nor in a 'present' conceived in terms of it, but rather of a 'condition' of writing which is both historical and attuned to the radical co-implication of poetics and the 'present time of writing.'"

Dans le monde des lettres louisianaises d'expression française du XIXe siècle, l'on pourrait tenir pour atypique le parcours littéraire irrégulier de Louis-Armand Garreau (1817-1865), à cheval sur deux continents, scandé d'arrêts et de reprises d'activité, de désirs politiques avortés, d'ambitions à la littérature de prestige et de compromissions feuilletonesques, de moments de gloire et d'oubli. L'on pourrait tout autant réduire l'auteur à son seul grand roman rédigé en Louisiane et exclure du champ d'études louisianais les quelques récits que Garreau publia lors de son retour en France, entre deux séjours à la Nouvelle-Orléans. Ce serait toutefois mettre à l'écart des textes qui abordent le contexte matériel et culturel louisianais de manière fort intéressante et qui méritent, de ce fait, de retrouver une place de choix dans le corpus des ?uvres figurant la société plantocratique créole du XIXe siècle. Les six textes réunis dans ce volume sont de provenance et d'époques diverses, et correspondent à des phases distinctes dans la carrière de Garreau. Les quatre premiers mettent en scène des personnages-types de la société louisianaise : esclaves marrons, planteurs créoles, Indiens et voyageurs. Son engagement antiesclavagiste reste une contribution essentielle de Louis-Armand Garreau au champ littéraire louisianais, et par extension au monde des lettres d'expression française. Elle fut reconnue du vivant de l'auteur, et, symptomatiquement, par la population noire de la Nouvelle-Orléans, comme l'indique l'acte de décès de l'auteur, publié le 30 mars 1865 dans la Tribune de la Nouvelle-Orléans. Évidemment, un des grands points d'intérêt de Louisiana consiste en la mise en scène d'événements passionnants qui ont réellement eu lieu et qui auraient pu changer la destinée du continent. L'unité de l'action fait la force de ce roman dont la lecture est entraînante, voire passionnante par moments. Biography: Armand Augustin Louis de Caulaincourt-from wikipedia
Armand Augustin Louis de Caulaincourt, 1st Duc de Vicence (December 9, 1773 - February 19, 1827) was a French general and diplomat. He was born to a noble family of the homonymous town, in the French region of Picardie. He entered the army at the age of 15, without achieving a high degree of success.

In 1792 he was captain, but he was thrown into prison--probably because he had rendered himself obnoxious to the democrats. He was freed, but on condition that he should serve as a simple grenadier. He did so for three years, when, through the intercession of General Hoche, he was restored to his former rank as captain. Yet even after ten years of service, his advancements were very slow.

He eventually attained the rank of colonel in the Army of the Rhine in 1799-1800. After the peace of Lunéville in 1801 he was sent to St Petersburg by Napoleon I of France. His mission was ostensibly to compliment Alexander I on his accession to the crown, but in reality to destroy the English influence in that court.

On his return he was named aide-de-camp of the First Consul. He was employed to seize some agents of the English government in Baden in 1804, which led to the accusation that he was implicated in the arrest of the duc d'Enghien, which he vigorously denied.

After the establishment of the empire he received various honors and the title of Duke of Vicenza in 1808, a duché grand-fief (a rare, nominal but hereditary honor; extinguished in 1896). Napoleon had sent him in 1807 as an ambassador to St. Petersburg, where Caulaincourt tried to maintain the alliance of Tilsit. His tasks were more those of a spy than an ambassador, and although Napoleon's ambition made the task a difficult one, Caulaincourt succeeded in it for some years.

In 1810 Caulaincourt strongly advised Napoleon to renounce his proposed expedition to Russia. During the war he accompanied the emperor, and was one of those whom Napoleon took along with him when he suddenly left his army in Poland to return to Paris in December of 1812. During the last years of the empire, Caulaincourt was charged with all the diplomatic negotiations. He signed the armistice of Pleswitz, June 1813, represented France at the congress of Prague in August 1813, and at the Treaty of Fontainebleau on April 10, 1814.

During the first Bourbon Restoration, Caulaincourt lived in obscure retirement.

When Napoleon returned from Elba (the Hundred Days), he became his minister of foreign affairs, and tried to persuade Europe of the emperor's peaceful intentions.

After the second Restoration, Caulaincourt's name was on the list of those proscribed, but it was erased on the personal intervention of Alexander I with Louis XVIII. Caulaincourt's famous memoir, "With Napoleon in Russia" was lost for years and finally unearthed after World War I.
