1-0 out of 5 stars For THIS we killed the Death Star?
Star Wars: Union

I am your basic, avid, robot drooling fanboy of Star Wars. That said, its been several years since I accidentally burned out my retinas by reading this comic. I was only seventeen at the time, so I can be forgiven... but the writers can not!

Sorry, I sound harsh, but this mediocre play at Star Wars role playing is SO Mary Sue that I couldn't believe it was supposed to be canon.

Of course, its entertaining. If you can put down the stuff that rises from the back of your throat while reading this mess you start to enjoy it for its own weirdness. Luke is in love with Mara Jade and they are getting married. Bad 'Imperials' try to stop the wedding. They don't. Theres the plot.

The more interesting things are found while reading the book.. scenes where Luke is hugging Mara from behind look more like Luke is attacking a poor female in the woods while she gazes off into nothingness... while a tiny bird is perched on her fingers like a real Mary Poppins.

Really... this is pretty corny.

I like corny... when its actually Mary Poppins. Not when its the hand of the freaking Emperor!!

I don't want to come down like a ton of bricks on the guys who wrote this. I respect them for their awesomeness and I appreciate the amount of work that went into this book.

But I just can't get over the idea that Mara Jade would cry while she picks out her wedding dress with Leia... Mara Jade would get married while killing rogue Storm Troopers in the middle of a fire fight while carrying limp Luke over her shoulder and dragging the minister with her free leg!!

So please... lets have a do over... lets do this wedding right, hmmm?

4-0 out of 5 stars Luke and Mara Get Married
Ever since I found myself getting involved in the "Star Wars" Expanded Universe, I've come to appreciate just how much the tie-in books have added depth and richness to George Lucas's six-film creation."Union" contributes to that with its tale of the events leading up to the televised wedding of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker and former Emperor's Hand Mara Jade. Michael A. Stackpole's nicely written dramedy has ex-Imperials plotting to disrupt the wedding; Luke and Mara having dark pre-nuptial nightmares; and humorous scenes such as Mara trying on hilariously bad wedding dresses, Luke's bachelor party at the Red Rancor Bar that turns into a brawl between the Rebel Alliance heroes and the party-crashing ex-Imperials, and comedic banter between Rogue Squadron members Janson and Hobbie. The cover art is beautifully rendered by Terese Nielsen. I have no complaints about the artwork inside; granted, it's not perfect, but I've seen worse and at least Luke and Mara now look their respective ages. I also noted with amusement that Kam Solusar bears a more-than-passing resemblance to Bruce Willis. The only problem I have - and it's only a mild one - is that, in Mike Stackpole's hands, Mara Jade doesn't quite come off sounding like how she does when Timothy Zahn writes her dialogue, but I guess you have to expect that when a writer works with a character that another writer has created.

1-0 out of 5 stars Imperials Destroy Mara and Luke's Wedding!News at 11!
Our eligible bachelor is about to become ineligible!Yes, Luke Skywalker has finally broken down and is gonna get married (and not to the horrible women like Callista and Akanah, in books past) to the beautiful, former Emperor's Hand, Mara Jade. But wedding bliss and hectic wedding preparations aren't their only concern. In between picking wedding dresses, planning the honeymoon, and remembering the rings, Luke and Mara also have to deflect an attempt by the Imperials (of course the Imperials; standard Star Wars fare: if you want to make someone the bad guy, make the Empire) to destroy the wedding.
Excited?Didn't think so.
There are some beautiful drawings, and the author really tries hard to span the entire galaxy. But the basic plot--that Luke and Mara's wedding is so repulsive that someone would want to ruin it--is trivial. And the ending! It is wrapped up in a few hideous panels, where, after a brief interchange with Luke, in which he bathers some prattling nonsense, the Imperials pretty much go, "Oh, that's what the Rebellion was about!Golly gee, that's so cool! Why didn't I get involved sooner?"Goll dang it, why does every stupid Imperial have to turn over to the Republic with a mere few words from one of our main guys? Why can't anyone just agree to disagree and move on?Why does everyone have to convert to the Republic?(Yes, I am a big Empire fan...was it that obvious?)
The art is pretty atrocious in many spots.Mara Jade, Luke, Han, and Leia can look very beautiful and realistic and in the same page look completely hideous.Secondary characters, like Kam, Corran, Wedge, and the Imperial bad guys, look almost the exact same in each and every frame.Determining who is saying what in any frame is a chore, unless they happen to call out who the other guy is.But this doesn't always help as sometimes the bubbles seem to go to the wrong characters.
Some good artwork and seeing Luke and Mara get married really doesn't compensate for the terrible plot, the indistinguishable characters, and the pat conclusion. The graphic novel wasn't that long, yet it took me a week to finish, because I kept putting it off.I would not recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars For those who wanted to see Luke and Mara get Married
This to me was a no brainer since i read the novel Heir to the Empire the verbal banter and sexual chemistry between Luke And Mara was there from the beginning, and the end of the book made me think they would defintely get together.Though it took the people in Lucas licensing years to notice the fans loved Mara as much as the original Trilogies characters. In Fact out of all the EU characters she is the only one who would fit the pantheon of the LUCAS canon characters.

Still Luke wasted years with Callista like a dummy when Mara was right in front of him, lol.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superficial plot, but nice anyway
Well, after Vision of the Future, I of course wanted to read about the wedding and this comic provided it for me. The plot is superficial, but I liked a lot of the other things. Like the dress fitting (especially the retro imperial design), the women in the Spa (and what came directly after) and of course some of the action. I agree with some other reviewers that Mara didn't look as good as she did in By the Emperor's hand (there she was a real tough bitch, and I mean this in a positive way), just a bit too much of a nice girl even if she did put her light saber to good use. Most of the characters were drawn well, especially Han, but whoever decided to do Luke's hair on the wedding day was probably suffering from some kind of mental sickness. Really! And Mara's dress was just a bit too traditional (why not another colour than white?). But on the whole I liked reading it, and laughed a lot too! If you like Mara (and Luke of course), then you should certainly pick it up. If only to realise that these characters do normal things as well, not just fighting and whacking around. ... Read more
