Thomas Bailey Aldrich (1836-1907) was an American poet, novelist, traveller, and editor. His father's death in 1849 compelled Aldrich to abandon the idea of college and he entered his uncle's business office in New York at age 16 in 1852. Here he soon became a constant contributor to the newspapers and magazines. From 1856 to 1859 he was on the staff of the Home Journal and during the Civil War was editor of the New York Illustrated News. Meanwhile Aldrich had written much, both in prose and verse. His genius was many-sided. His successive volumes of verse, chiefly The Ballad of Babie Bell (1856), Pampinea, and Other Poems (1861), Cloth of Gold (1874), Flower and Thorn (1876), Friar Jerome's Beautiful Book (1881), Mercedes and Later Lyrics (1883), Wyndham Towers (1889), and the collected editions of 1865, 1882, 1897 and 1900, showed him to be a poet of lyrical skill, dainty touch and felicitous conceit, the influence of Herrick being constantly apparent. ... Terrible, boring story.
Disclaimer: I am a female... so perhaps I am biased.

That is probably why I absolutely hated this book. I read it for school, and had to write a book report on it. But I couldn't find anything good to say about it. I am assuming it's due to my having been a girl, and being interested in "girl things".

The boy never actually does anything TRULY bad at all. He's just an ordinary boy, with a rash of bad luck. I found the story to be dull, monotonous, and annoying, in that nothing ever really happens. Well, things happen, but nothing that seemed to merit writing an entire book about it. I believe that a boy could possibly like this book, but if you are considering having a girl read it... please spare her the torture. There is plenty of literature available for girls. I personally will be sparing my boys as well.

disappointed
The name of thestoryimplies some good spoanking scenes.There were none in the whole book.I have no idea why this book was placed in the area of spanking stories.It was long, drawn out,really not interesting in the least.

very pleased
A real boyhood classic, perhaps the first realistic novel of American boyhood. Was a bit disappointed that none of the original illustrations, by A.B. Frost, were included.

A New England boyhood
This neat little novel is written in the tradition of Tom Sawyer, though it appeared 5 years earlier than Twain's classic. It's about all the mischief, chivalry, loyalty, and pluck of a young boy's life. Aldrich is in love with his material and revels in all the antics his characters get involved in. The snowball fight is a gem. The boyhood dialogue is excellent and rings true.

a must-read for Tom Sawyer fans!
The Story of a Bad Boy is one of my favorite books. It's interesting, humorous, and touching, and gives you an inside look at the life of a boy in Massachusetts in the early 1800s. I love the author's style of writing.It seems to make the story all the more humorous, and brings you back tothose olden days. I also love this book because it's a true story, and thiskid led a life full of adventures and mishaps. I would recommend it toanyone who enjoyed Tom Sawyer because these two books are similar, and thetwo boys have the same type of mischievous personalities. Pretty lame
Prose and writing style are nice, a nice read. From a detective or suspense perspective, it was a lame story.

Nice Detective Fiction
Written in 1880, this book is believed to be the first time a detective appears in English Literature.The author was a poet, which sometimes shows in the fluid style of his scenery description.It is a pleasant story, which reads as part Detective fiction, part Victorian romance.The prose is clean and crisp, which makes it easy to follow.

As for the Public Domian Books edition, I found roughly 40 errors.This may seem a bit excessive, but I can't really complain, as the book was free and produced by volunteers.I have noted the errors, and have submitted them to Project Gutenberg for correction, it is possible that they have been corrected by this point.
