The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Western literary study flows out of eighteenth-century works by Alexander Pope, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Frances Burney, Denis Diderot, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great lover of liberty
Joseph Addison, 1672-1719, lived his whole life during a period of civil strife in England. He lived during the reigns of Charles II, James II, William and Mary, William III, Queen Anne and George I.These were turbulent political times in Britain with a tense power struggle taking shape in Parliament between two political parties, the Whigs, and Torries.Addison was educated at Oxford University where he displayed a voracious appetite for learning classical history."It was the Roman concept of citizenship which had already impressed itself deeply upon Addison's mind.An upright character and conduct, good service to the state ..." At Oxford, he honed his literary skills through writing poetry. However, it was in literature, specifically in political essay writing for the Whig party, in which Addison made his mark.Addison and his school friend Richard Steele teamed up to write 555 issues of the "Spectator" in a little less than two years.Dr. Samuel Johnson, one of England's greatest literary figures, wrote of Addison in his book "Lives of the English Poets," "Whoever wishes to attain an English style, familiar but not coarse, and elegant but not ostentatious, must give his days and nights to the volumes of Addison."

Besides poetry and essays, Addison wrote three plays. His most successful play was his only tragedy "Cato," first staged, "... in April 1713, it ran for thirty nights, an unprecedented performance for the time."The play would show over one hundred and eighty times by 1750.The play was a rousing success and found favor with both Whig and Tory party members."Cato's" popularity quickly spread to the European continent where it won critical acclaim from Voltaire. Its translation into French, Italian, German, Dutch, and Polish was almost immediate.

The play embodies all the classical ideals that Addison held so dear throughout his life. From just a brief synopsis of the plot, one can observe the virtues of honor, duty, and loyalty, which are all underpinning virtues of the Stoic Philosophy that Cato the Younger represented, and men such as George Washington emulated. The main plot of the play is:

Cato and his army have been trapped at Utica by the superior forces of Julius Caesar.Cato is the last hope of the Roman Republic; he has led the forces of the senate in futile resistance to Caesar's attempt to become dictator. His troops teeter on the edge of mutiny; his allies threaten to decamp.Cato struggles against panic to remain master of himself and of events. In a final gesture to remain master of his own destiny, he commits suicide.

Henry Montgomery notes that, "the play was more than a political success.Addison had satisfied the classical idealism that was so strong in the reign of Queen Anne ... the age is known as the Augustan Age of English literature."The play's importance cannot be overstated for it serves as a beacon of republican virtue for the Augustan Age.

I read this book for a graduate Humanities class.Recommended for people interested in literature, history, philosophy, and the founding of America.
