Product Description

The goals of health and human security are fundamentally valued in all societies, yet the breadth of their interconnections are not properly understood. This volume explores the evolving relationship between health and security in today's interdependent world, and offers policy guidelines for global health action.

This volume underscores three basic principles. First, recent developments in the changing security landscape present enormous challenges for human security and global health. Second, although the connections between health and security are long-standing, the current context of new conflicts, pervasive poverty, and accelerating global flows has brought the fields closer together. Finally, a human security approach dependent upon individual and collective action can identify new strategies for meeting the goals of global health and security.

The distinguished contributions to this volume were commissioned by Harvard University's Global Equity Initiative, a research unit supporting the work of the International Commission on Human Security.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insect Structure for Kids
Kids love insects until adults teach them not to.But there are many fascinating aspects of insects and the most fascinating (at least to me) is their body structure and function. This book, while a little pricey (especially since it is partially sponsored (funded?) by Orkin), provides avery nice introduction to the general body structure and function ofinsects.I wouldn't have a problem recommending this book to anyone whosechild wants to learn more about insects. And then let them decide if theywant to pay the price.

The book follows a student named Fred Smertz wholoves to eat insects. The book does let children know that Fred is unusualand they "shouldn't try this (eating insects) at home." The bookuses a story line in a poem to lead the reader through the tutorial oninsect body structure. This might be a little much for some 12 year olds, although I was able to enjoy it.But then, since I'm an entomologist, I'malready a little weird.

The book is very nicely illustrated and does awonderful job of explaining the basic concepts of insect structure, such asbody parts, external and internal anatomy, metamorphosis, the differencesbetween some insect orders, and even some insect behavior.Everything ischosen to continue childrens' interest in insects without overwhelming themwith scientific details. Younger children (4-8) might have a smallproblem with the "technical aspects" of this book in that some ofthe illustrations and related concepts are not laid out as simply as theymight be. On some pages they are mixed up with other graphics. However, parents will learn a lot from the book after their kids have finished withit. And I intend to show this book to one of my colleagues who hasresponsibility in 4-H for possible use in our state insect programs forchildren. ... Read more

Product Description

This book explores Systems Biology as the understanding of biological network behaviors, and in particular their dynamic aspects, which requires the utilization of mathematical modeling tightly linked to experiment. A variety of approaches are discussed here: the identification and validation of networks, the creation of appropriate datasets, the development of tools for data acquisition and software development, and the use of modeling and simulation software in close concert with experiment.

Product Description
What would Howard Carter have thought of Lara Croft? and why do archaeologists feature so prominently in Star Trek?

Douglas Adams, author of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy writes the preface to this unusual collection of papers dedicated to exploring the role of the archaeologist in popular culture.

The clichés and stereotypes of archaeology that abound in popular culture, the sense of mystery and adventure, the excitement generated by a dangerous treasure hunt or a thrilling detective story, rarely hint at the monotonous hours spent by modern archaeologists researching in laboratories and libraries and filling out paperwork. Yet the role-models provided by fictional characters such as Dr Who, Indiana Jones, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lara Croft have had a powerful influence on how archaeologists and the practices of archaeology are viewed by the general public.

At times hilarious, these papers nevertheless address serious cultural issues relevant to archaeology today: colonialism, the indigenous voice, gender roles, objectivity, and "ownership" of the past. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Comedy Classic Butchered beyond recognition
I usually cannot stop reading a book in Adam's hilarious Hitchiker series. It takes me about a day on average to read one of these (usually) 200 page books. So Long and Thanks for all the Fish didn't succeed so well. It'sprobably because of the editing necessary to make an abridged version.Itis my opinion that books shoudln't be abridged.A half size Adam's book isworth about as much as a 500 page Les Miserables. If you want a goodreading experience, go out and get the full version! ... Product Description
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a book with the invaluable words on the cover which inform the reader not to panic. It can also tell you everything you need to know about anything - which might be very useful for Arthur Dent who is in the unfortunate position of being one of the few humans still alive - after the earth was unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. He will also find himself living in a hideously miserable cave on prehistoric earth. And with the added thrills of parallel universes, two headed aliens, God's Final Message and...mice...it seems like a book that you need to have with you at all times. This set contains The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, The Universe and Everything, So Long and Thanks for the Fish and Mostly Harmless. ...
