It takes place two hundred years after the events of Martha Wells' first novel, The Element of Fire , but it is an entirely independent story. Nicholas Valiarde is a master criminal obsessed with destroying the aristocrat who framed his foster father for the capital crime of necromancy. His carefully laid plans for revenge begin to go awry when he is attacked by a ghoul while burgling a Duchess's cellars. The attack seems to be connected to mysterious corpses that are turning up in the river. Dead bodies are common in Vienne, but these bear gruesome evidence that someone is practicing necromancy in the city. Necromancy has been outlawed in Vienne for centuries, but sorcery is common, and Nicholas's mysterious enemies soon turn deadly magic against him. Nicholas's close-mouthed manner and established history make him a difficult character to warm up to, but he is surrounded by likeable companions with checkered pasts. They include a disgraced cavalry officer, a popular stage actress, and a sorcerer who would be formidable if only he weren't tanked to the gills on opium. Their chief enemy is Inspector Ronsarde, a thinly disguised Sherlock Holmes figure complete with Dr. Watson. Martha Wells marvelously depicts Vienne as a gently crumbling city, lit by gaslight and shrouded by fog. It sounds like a cross between The Phoenix Guards and the Arabian Nights, and I really would like to read it someday, because it sounds like fun. But while I wouldn't describe City of Bones as "rollicking," I'm certainly glad that it happened to be tucked into this particular dustjacket, because it's a Very Good Read. Charisat is a tiered city, in which the richer you are, the higher you live. The closest things to law and order are the Trade Inspectors, who wield big sticks, and Warders, who wield Mystical Powers. Khat is a lower-Tier dealer of relics, artifacts that predate the ancient holocaust that turned the region (and, presumably, most of the planet) into a desert Waste. When a First Tier Warder hires him to guide her to an already thoroughly picked- over ancient building in the nearby Waste, he ends up involved in a search for stolen relics. Everyone, of course, is after these particular relics, and the quest turns into a panicked race to Save the World. Post-holocaust novels of every stripe generally irritate me, but

You want proof? How about earning a coveted berth on the final Nebula ballot with just her third novel, The Death of the Necromancer ? It's no coincidence either: with each new book, Wells has shown a remarkable progression of depth and complexity in her writing, avoiding the cliched color-by-numbers plotting that plagues so much popular fantasy today. In The Death of the Necromancer , Wells returns to the convoluted, courtly intrigue of aristocratic Ile-Rien, the setting of her debut novel, The Element of Fire . Make no mistake though, Necromancer is no sequel. Whereas Ile-Rein was just entering a Rennaisance-style period in the previous book, several hundred years have passed since then, and the cities are all cobblestones and gaslights. Progress of any sort, no matter how many years have passed in a certain mythical locale, is practically verboten under the conventions of the genre. It's startling and refreshing to find a writer throw those stodgy conventions out the window, and that's a big part of the charm of Wells' writing.

It spoke through her, foretold the future and allowed her to find the best path for her people. That all ended when Maskelle was exiled as a traitor for murder, but nothing could ever hurt her so much as the ghosts of her own conscience and her own perception of guilt. And now she has been summoned back to the Temple City of Duvalpore in order to help put the world to rights again. The yearly ceremony of remaking the "Wheel of the Infinite" is a very deliberate and precise ritual. In order to ensure another year of peace and prosperity for the Celestial Empire, the ceremony must take place. If it does not, there can be only disharmony and ruin for all. The world and the Wheel of the Infinite are one, and this is the reweaving of the very fabric of the world. There has never been a time when the ceremony was not performed, and there must never be. Du XIXe siècle, elle ne livre que de vagues réminiscences: architecture, costumes, sciences et techniques semblent s'y rapporter, sans excès, ni outrance: on n'est pas franchement dans le steampunk.

That sad fact is a blessing to new, fresh voices, however, as their work stands out all the more from the morass of homogenous mediocrity. Martha Wells garnered a well-deserved bit of notice with her debut novel, The Element of Fire , which effectively recreated the royal intrigue of 17th century France in a magical, mystical setting. Determined to avoid any sophomore slump, Wells eschews the industry-favored safety net of a sequel and instead stakes out new territory. New territory, indeed. With City of Bones , Wells invents a whole new world rooted in everything from The Arabian Nights to the post-apocalyptic themes of speculative fiction. Charisat is the greatest city of the devastated Great Waste, towering over the holocaust-ravaged world. All trade routes eventually lead here, a great mix of cultures and creeds that is as much Babylon as Casablanca. Naturally, it's a magnet of people too, attracting all manner of schemer, thief, businessman and trader. And Khat. Khat is a waste-dweller, one of a marginalized people genetically or magically, the point is unclear engineered to survive the hostile deserts and the mutated, monstrous dangers that live there. Khat learned long ago that survival is the first order of business, and if you manage to improve your lot just a little in the process, well, you're coming out ahead. Unfortunately, others want much more than that and are determined to draw him into a plot to venture out into the Great Waste, to revisit the ruins of the lost civilization that once destroyed the world, and unlock the mysteries of those powers.

Now, in her fourth novel of fantastic fiction, Wells succeeds yet again in producing a wholly original, brilliant conception sure to cement her reputation as one of the finest writers in the field, deserving to rank alongside such masters as Guy Gavriel Kay, Gene Wolfe, Jack Vance, Tim Powers and Tanith Lee. The Wheel of the Infinite distinguishes itself immediately with its setting, an invented parallel world strongly reminiscent of southeast Asia even more specifically, the glorious civilization of Cambodia in the 12th and 13th centuries. Its cities of Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat show whiffs of inspiration from Tibet and India as well. Duvalpore, the Celestial Empire's city of temples, is the site where every year, the wizardly Voices of the Ancestors must gather to renew the wheel of the Infinite, an image built of sand, (empowered with magical chants, visualizations and incense). The image represents the key to the shape of reality. An especially important centenary version of this rite is approaching but an inexplicable, ominous, stormy black region has marred the Wheel's representation and all the sorcerous efforts of the Voices have failed to restore it to purity. If the blight is not excised before the rite is completed, the world could be totally, undesirably changed. The Voice of the Adversary, Maskelle, who speaks for the power the Ancestors created to wipe out evil, has wandered in exile since a false vision years ago. But now the head of the Koshan Order of priests, the Celestial One, has called her back to the capital city of Duvalpore to make use of her unique, uncanny gifts. Maskelle returns with the friends and allies she acquired in the wider world Rastim's troupe of actors and the attractive, foreign swordsman/bodyguard Rian.
