Caught in the strangled-hold of the Great Depression, the city plays host to a surprising event in Harlem: a WPA-sponsored all-black production of the immortal play, Macbeth. Inside the borough's Lafayette Theater, a young Orson Welles works feverishly to whip a motley group of out-of-work housemaids, laundry workers, seamstresses, and porters into a company of accomplished actors. Outside the auditorium, protesters picket on a daily basis after local Communist party leaders decry the play as nothing more than "minstrel Shakespeare." Tensions escalate when the picketing leads to a confrontation between protesters and members of the cast. As if a fist fight isn't enough, several letters arrive at the theater threatening Welles' life. Determined to go on with the play, Orson hires a bodyguard. Enter Sassafras Winters, a retired Chicago Cubs pitcher and novice private investigator. Recommended by his old friend, aspiring actor Canada Lee, Winters travels to New York to oversee Welles' safety. He is joined there by a mysterious character named Chinaman, a man devoted to serving Winters' every whim as a personal valet. Within days of their arrival a white man disappears outside the apartment of black actress Rose Ramsey. Although Norton Denbrough's body is never found, cast member Ben Kanter is charged with the man's murder. Welles persuades Sassafras to investigate the case, but saving Kanter is no easy chore. The fledgling detective must battle not only the prejudice of the New York Police Department, but also the scheming of one Andre De Shields, a P.I. hired by Denbrough's mother.

Under The Covers: Deadly Little Christmas By Welk DEADLY LITTLE CHRISTMAS by mary welk Kleworks July 1998; $10.00 softcover261 pp; ISBN 0966-51570-6 2 Reviews. Highly Recommended by Linda Hurst. http://www.silcom.com/~manatee/welk_deadly.html
Extractions: Highly Recommended by Linda Hurst DEADLY LITTLE CHRISTMAS is a first novel by Mary Welk. As the title implies it is a murder mystery. I really liked the heroine, she is a little different from the usual protaganists. First, she is a woman pushing 50, she is fighting middle age spread and depression. Caroline Rhodes' husband was killed by a hit and run driver as he was jogging and she witnessed the accident. She is a nurse and suffered from depression, because combined with her grief was the thought that she should have been able to do something professionally to help him. As the book opens she has moved to a small town near her son after being hospitalized for her depression. She is about to enter the rec room in the hospital when a bomb goes off killing 7 people. She later stumbles across a second murder and becomes the FBI's number one suspect. The secondary characters in this book are well drawn, and Carl, who aids her is absolutely charming. I hope that there will be more adventures for Caroline, including perhaps having a recall that will enable her to solve the identity of the driver who killed her husband. The only hesitation I have is that the ending seemed a tad muddled But Ms. Welk played fair, their were clues one could trace back to justify the conclusion. For a first novel this one holds much promise, there is so much to like including the heroine. It was a delight to read about someone who is over 50 and doesn't wear a size 6.

Aside from her great talent, those are the qualities that brought her from children's shows in Philadelphia to a top spot in the most enduring and legendary television musical show of all time. Her career actually got under way when she was 4 years old. "My mom gave me dancing lessons," recalled Mary Lou as we visited over lunch in a restaurant recently. "And I was hooked! I just loved dancing and everything about it." MUSIC MAN Her teacher Jane Burnett, who had been in "42nd Street" with Dick Powell, instantly recognized that this elfin little girl with the huge hazel eyes was a major talent. Extractions: THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW U.S. Musical Show One of television's most enduring musical series, The Lawrence Welk Show , was first seen on network TV as a summer replacement program in 1955. Although the critics were not impressed, Mr. Welk's show went on to last an astonishing 27 years. His format was simple: easy-listening music, what he referred to as "champagne music," and a "family" of wholesome musicians, singers, and dancers. The show ran on ABC for the first 16 years and was known in the early years as The Dodge Dancing Party. ABC canceled the show in 1971, not because of lack of popularity, but because it was "too old" to please advertisers. ABC's cancellation did little to stop Welk, who lined up more than 200 independent stations for a successful syndicated network of his own. Part of Welk's success can be attributed to his relationship with viewers. He meticulously compiled a "fever chart" which tallied pro and con comments received from viewers' letters. Performers with favorable comments became more visible on the show. In this way, the viewer also played an important role in his "family" of regulars. There were many show favorites throughout the years including the Lennon Sisters, who were brought to his attention by his son Lawrence Jr. who was dating Dianne Lennon in 1955. Other favorites included the Champagne Ladies (Alice Lon and Norma Zimmer); accordionist Myron Floren, who was also the assistant conductor; singer-pianist Larry Hooper; singers Joe Feeney and Guy Hovis; violinist Aladdin; dancers Bobby Burgess and Barbara Boylan; and Welk's daughter-in-law, Tanya Falan Welk.
