Extractions: 2002 James Laughlin Award $5,000 for a Second Book of Poems New York, August 20, 2002 The Academy of American Poets announced today that Karen Volkman has been selected as the recipient of the 2002 James Laughlin Award for her second collection of poems, Spar (University of Iowa Press). Ms. Volkman will receive a cash prize of $5,000, and the Academy will purchase copies of Spar for distribution to its members. Daniel Hall, Campbell McGrath, and Mary Jo Bang, the judges for this year's award, named one other second collection as a finalist: Hip Logic by Terrance Hayes (Penguin Books). On choosing the winning manuscript, head juror Daniel Hall wrote: "It's a poem of pure parts," Karen Volkman declares, almost by way of apology, at the midpoint of her book-length sequence, Spar . "It's already failing, it wants to look at the world the way a bird eats a berry." This shifting of intention and agency from poet to poem is telling: the book seems to charge on ahead while we, like its author, do our best to keep up. The illusion is convincing at times, but the steady hand of the craftsman is always palpable. And this is craftsmanship of a very high order. . . . [H]er diction, old-fashioned in its elegance and poise, and the carefully weighted cadences of her sentences, hearken back to her earliest sources and allow the book to ascend at times to a Mallarméan purity.

Extractions: Untitled Lady of the lake, what does all our weeping lead to? A pair of keys, paucity of summerjust because. I tasted his tears, they were salty, like a seawindthat should have been enough to set sail, acres of stray. Acres of wind-swept granary, what then? Everything blind begins in the darkness. It portends the deliberateness of an unsinking sun, past forgetting, or finishing, the room phrased, phased, like tiny nets of caught. A tree never asked for its stature. A pearl never counted its pallor as less or more. Why should winds take the pulse of farther, slipped along the digits of simple go, of been? No one has thoughts as pale as thesetill they bleed them. I doubt more the less I grow, I taste the dark cognition, it is everybody's random. Be your own heart's ending, in the abandonment of seemingweeping like a two-bit sermonmistress Sum. Untitled He deciphers my plain lines badly, from whom ideas are not meant to multiply. Such lapses contract or repel the intruder, anemic or shut, an abstained attention. Zephyrs of speed within, freezing; those phantoms which never cease to rave; some industrious zero opened out into a wheel. And later, exhausted with indifferent meaninga dead limb, a woodenand the hooks that clamber, implausible hands. The failing stretches and extends outside it. No more on my tongue was there ever a name. Some instinct claimed a tainting; I saw nothing. My curse not yet growing on my skin, or flicked in the ear like an opulent whip. A thought erected and burnished, boxed in a gleaming, like a head inviting the hawks in. Feet on the voids again, the way a woman might flee, solitude fallen, his cloaked back empty with wounds, he avoids her like a feather.

Extractions: Crash's Law, Spar 's dense verbal texture isn' t just for show, but determined wholly by the poet's struggle to solidify and retain what slips away, what can' t be possessed. Spar ends: "when late light turns the leaves gold, when the red pine offers its armfuls of snow, we are not hunger and perjure. In that moment (blemish and blossom) we are gaze."

Extractions: This must be some specious season, quick and numbered, pulling the this-world to quivered, hectic ends. Sepals could count it. Pistils, pearly queens. Little godhead stamens, tense, erected. All this intends writes Volkman with the mischievous authority of a sideshow barker standing before the curtains of reality and promising to reveal to you, the reader, should you take the chance the strangest wonders of natural world. The poems of Spar recall Rilke of the Sonnets to Orpheus , not only in her depictions of the language of sense experience as a congeries of active agents "What, I said, noise, I said, is you, are you, all?" [10], starts one poem, and "Berry, eye" ends another but also in her use of first lines that simultaneously suggest both a conclusion and riddle one poems starts "No noise subtracts it," and another "A light says why" thus tossing the reader in media res into a slipstream of cosmic, sensually redolent speculation, even if the subject remains aporic, an empty eye-of-the-storm.
