ISSN 1201-317X With the publication of the Summer 2000 issue, Harpweaver, the literary journal published by Brock University's Department of English Language and Literature, is expanding to two issues a year. So those interested in reading the work of new and established writers can expect another volume of the usual fruitful melding of fiction, poetry, art, and critical analysis to enlighten the winter months. Turning the pages of the current issue, it comes as no surprise to discover poetry makes up the major content. There are well-known names such as James Reaney and Terrance Cox, and newer voices such as graduate student Matt Robinson. Canadian writers are the main contributors but there are also selections from those living in the United States, and some whose whereabouts are matters for deduction. Similarly there is no way of knowing, in most cases, if we are being introduced to recent work. We may assume the interview with Aritha van Herk is current in view of her inclusion in the 2000-2001 Harpweaver Reading Series, but Poetry Nation, an anthology reviewed in these pages, was published in 1998. Many readers appreciate being privy to a writer's development and growth, while understanding that getting published can take some time.

Students will develop an understanding of both the form and content of the art under study. They will be expected to write a final interdisciplinary essay in which they compare the works of Irene McCaugherty and Vera Lysenko, or Esther Warkov and Aritha van Herk, or Tomson Highway and Susan Ross. to introduce students to active self-learning through technology

Lauren B. Davis : Reviews . The StubbornSeason is an epiphanic hourglass for the harsh dust that trickledthrough one of the worst of times. aritha van herk The Globe and Mail http://www.laurenbdavis.com/reviews.cfm
Extractions: "Put this book on your literary map and circle it in gold, for here lies buried treasure. Dig into its pages and discover a new voice, one that can be tender, tough and - in the best and most adventurous sense - dangerous. Read at your own risk, for in Lauren Davis's stories, you may find yourself." "Nell's husband, a failed farmer, is abject and dangerous. A week before he takes his fists to Nell she sees her first rat. The varmint has a smug look, staring her down. Later, she's doing the dishes and a face appears in the kitchen window. "A rat face. . . . He reaches out and puts one little paw up against the glass. I put my finger up against the glass on my side . . . like somebody visiting a prisoner in jail." In this audacious and extraordinary debut collection, figurative rats abound. Like the real ones, they can be revolting or charming, vicious and greedy, or sweetly innocent-looking as they plot to ravage all that sustains you. Lauren B. Davis's human rats come in varying colours and degrees of domestication, and are as touching as their victims. The range of human psyches portrayed here is striking and encompassing, and recalls a phrase of Timothy Findley's, that real writers "don't appropriate voices, they hear them." Davis hears clearly and listens carefully, and fearlessly records what she knows about men, women, the very young and very old, the bloom and whither of love.
