A teacher marries her, providing stability if not sanity, but the 1840s famines begin and the couple flee Ireland with their child Liam. They establish a homestead in a remote part of Ontario where a baby girl, Eileen, is born. Not long after, the mother disappears and is not seen again for years until she is brought home dead. The son learns that she had been living by a lake immersed in her fantasies of the long dead lover. Eventually, Liam is left to care for his sister alone; they travel to a small port town where he realizes that Eileen has become an attractive young woman with desires of her own. She too goes "away" following a lover, but returns to Liam and his wife to live out her long and lonely life. Commentary Set against a backdrop of mid-nineteenth-century Ireland and Canada with references to actual political and natural events, this multi-layered story traces the trajectory of several generations of a family through the immigration experience. The nature of cultural and personal identity is a strong theme. The issue of "away" plays gently throughout the novel as a metaphor for madness or the plausibility of madness, together with its connection to love and sexual awakening.

Extractions: There's a girlishness about Jane Urquhart that belies 51 summers. "I love being in my 50s," Urquhart declares with some passion. "I'm finally starting to be taken seriously." This, of course, is at least partly in jest because, for almost as long as Urquhart has been writing, her work has been taken seriously. In 1992, her first novel, The Whirlpool , was the first Canadian book to win France's prestigious Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger (Best Foreign Book Award). Away, Urquhart's third novel, broke records by remaining on the The Globe and Mail newspaper's national bestseller list for 132 weeks. The 1994 winner of the Marian Engel award, Urquhart was also named to France's Order of Arts and Letters as a Chevalier. Her fourth novel, The Underpainter, was awarded Canada's most prestigious literary award when it was published in 1997: the Governor General's Award for Fiction. Urquhart's earliest publications were short fiction and poetry. Her first novel

Extractions: Jane Urquhart writes about the things that are close to her: Canadian history and landscape, the world of art and artists, and her own personal tragedies. Her deeply personal and emotional writing contrasts with her willingness to experiment - in the case of The Underpainter , with a "hero" who inspires anger and dislike, but for whom the reader can find some degree of pity. Her works are seen as very modern, but unusually lyrical. She is the latest in a line of Canadian writers who started with poetry and later moved into novel-writing.
The Stone Carvers - Jane Urquhart The Stone Carvers. Author jane urquhart. Publisher Bloomsbury. Price$29.95. Available Now. Stone but not cold. The Stone Carvers http://www.theblurb.com.au/Issue12/StoneCarvers.htm
Extractions: Stone - but not cold The Stone Carvers is not a book to be read in a hurry but should be saved for a time when you can immerse yourself in the grand imagery created by the author. Award-winning Urquhart's fifth novel traverses back and forth between generations and across the globe without confusing the reader. The stories within a story move effortlessly between Bavaria in the mid-1800s, pioneers developing the wilderness of northern Canada, the French battlefields of the First World War and its aftermath, culminating with a return to Canada. The central character, Klara, is introduced as a feisty 38-year old spinster living on the outskirts of an isolated Canadian village, Shonerval. The early narrative relates tales much-loved by Klara and the local nuns. These stories depict how the village was established and named by a Bavarian priest with a dream to build a large stone church with a bell. His seemingly improbable quest drew together a community including Klara's grandfather, a wood carver who later tries to pass on his skills to Klara's brother, Tilman.

Extractions: Set in the first half of the twentieth century, but reaching back to Bavaria in the late nineteenth century, The Stone Carvers weaves together the story of ordinary lives marked by obsession and transformed by art. At the centre of a large cast of characters is Klara Becker, the granddaughter of a master carver, a seamstress haunted by a love affair cut short by the First World War, and by the frequent disappearances of her brother Tilman, afflicted since childhood with wanderlust. From Ontario, they are swept into a colossal venture in Europe years later, as Toronto sculptor Walter Allward's ambitious plans begin to take shape for a war memorial at Vimy, France. Spanning three decades, and moving from a German-settled village in Ontario to Europe after the Great War, The Stone Carvers follows the paths of immigrants, labourers, and dreamers. Vivid, dark, redemptive, this is novel of great beauty and power.
