His beautiful and efficient phrasing, his ability to bring characters to life with only a few words, his willingness to present the information fairly and in a straightforward way, all have inspired generations of historians to try to imitate him. Tacitus was born about 55 AD . His wealthy fatherAgricola was a commander of the Roman army in Britain, shortly after Claudius conquered Britain and made it into a Roman province. Probably Tacitus also spent some time in Britain, and perhaps at other army outposts. But most of his time was spent in Rome. He was an active senator, with a successful political career, and a very famous public speaker. His first book, written in 98 AD when Tacitus was in his early 40's, was a biography of his father, called the Agricola . In it, Tacitus discusses the problems of taking over a new province. Ynys Gybi Ynys Seiriol in Welsh and formerly known as Priestholm after the monastic settlement there, the rocky outcrop is now a nature reserve inhabited in the main by a peculiar species of seabird whose presence have determined its modern name, Puffin Island. Anglesey, Holy Island, Puffin Island and about a dozen more small rocks together formed a separate county up until 1974 when they were made part of Gwynedd. The estimated population of Anglesey was around 68,500 inhabitants in 1985, and Holyhead, the primary town and busy seaport at the north end of Holy Island had an estimated population of 13,000 in 1988. Among the first mentions of Anglesey in the classics we have the dubious report of Gaius Plinius Secundus or Pliny the Elder, a Roman of equestrian rank from Transpadane Gaul (Northern Italy). He was a tireless and prolific writer who died whilst trying to obtain a more-advantageous view of the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius which destroyed the Campanian towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum (among others) in AD79. Extractions: Sign my Guest Book Publius Cornelius Tacitus (c. 54-117 AD ?) was a Roman historian, the author of, among other works, two long histories covering the imperial history from AD 14 to 96. These works are today known as the Histories the Annals and the Germanica. While the authenticity of some of Tacitus' earlier works is in question, the Annals are generally regarded as both authentic and historically accurate. In spite of the fact that our knowledge of Annals 11-16 relies on one extant manuscript, the authenticity of Book 15 is not in question. The dates of the birth and death of Tacitus are uncertain, but it question is probable that he was born about 54 A. D. and died after 117. He was a contemporary and friend of the younger Pliny, who addressed to him some of his most famous epistles. Tacitus was apparently of the equestrian class, was an advocate by training, and had a reputation as an orator, though none of his speeches has survived. He held a number of important public offices, and married the daughter of Agricola, the conqueror of Britain, whose life he wrote. The two chief works of Tacitus, the "Annals" and the "Histories," covered the history of Rome from the death of Augustus to A. D. 96; but the greater part of the "Histories" is lost, and the fragment that remains deals only with the year 69 and part of 70. In the "Annals" there are several gaps, but what survives describes a large part of the reigns of Tiberius, Claudius, and Nero. His minor works, besides the life of Agricola, are a "Dialogue on Orators" and the account of Germany, its situation, its inhabitants, their character and customs, which is here printed.

Mercury is the deity whom they chiefly worship, and on certain days they deem it right to sacrifice to him even with human victims. Hercules and Mars they appease with more lawful offerings. Some of the Suevi also sacrifice to Isis. Of the occasion and origin of this foreign rite I have discovered nothing, but that the image, which is fashioned like a light galley, indicates an imported worship.
