Spillane is best-known for his private detective Mike Hammer, who appeared in his first published book I, THE JURY (1947). The hardback edition did not sell well, but the paperback became a world-wide phenomenon. In the character of Hammer, the most chauvinist avenger among classical private eyes, Spillane created a dark counterpart to the knightly Philip Marlowe. "The biggest part of the joke is the punch line, so the biggest part of a book should be the punch line, the ending. People don't read a book to get to the middle, they read a book to get to the end and hope that the ending justifies all the time they spent reading it. So what I do is, I get my ending and, knowing what my ending is going to be, then I write to the end and have the fun of knowing where I'm going but not how I'm going to get there." Extractions: Mickey Spillane Mickey Spillane Interviewed by Michael Carlson The best part about interviewing Mickey Spillane is the fun he appears to be having...I likened it to a cowboy trying to saddle a wily old mustang that refuses to be broken and knows all the cowboy tricks. Mickey holds little back, and he is so animated with stories you soon realise that one of the keys to his success is his genuine interest in people. He's the kind of person who would fit in anywhere. There are a number of stories he asked be off the record, and a couple of them then popped up a few nights later during his Guardian Lecture, but I've kept to his request. I've also had to leave out Mickey's instructions on how to kiss a duck's tail without ruffling the feathers, mostly because there's no way I can describe it in prose. Mickey's persona is that of a tough guy who doesn't really care about his art, but as this interview makes clear, good story telling grows from understanding people, and Spillane has a PhD in people... I'll brown nose you right from the start...

Mike Hammer, embodiment of the hard- boiled detective, was originally named Mike Danger and was to have been a comic-book hero! Mickey Spillane was born March 9, 1918, in Brooklyn, New York and began writing during his high school years. After graduation he studied briefly at Kansas State Teachers College, returning to New York City to work at Gimbel's Department Store. Bored by retail Spillane went looking for a job closer to his passion, writing, and became an editor for Funnies, Inc., a comix company which was later to become Marvel Comics. There he wrote scripts, plotted stories, and wrote text fillers for features such as "Edison Bell, Boy Inventor" and "The Human Torch". When World War II broke out Spillane enlisted in the Air Force, becoming a fighter pilot instructor. He married in 1945. After completing his term of military service Spillane returned to New York, where, needing a thousand dollars build a house, he attempted to form a new comix company with former Funnies colleagues Ray Gill, Basil Wolverton and Mike Roy. Spillane was unable to obtain distribution of his new feature, a private eye adventure called "Mike Danger", and re-wrote the story as a novel; it was published as "I, The Jury" by E.P. Dutton in 1947, introducing the world to the hard-boiled detective Mike Hammer. Although the hardcover edition didn't sell very well, paperback sales were spectacular, precipitating a major change in the publishing world.

You could read plenty into that, but there's really a good reason why I chose to begin with it. I recently watched an old interview with Mickey Spillane. In the interview, he was asked about the sex and violence in his books, more specifically, about the ending to I, The Jury . He explains how the scene operates on many levels, that it wasn't just some lurid confrontation between a woman killer and the man sworn to avenge her victim. That segment of the interview ends with Spillane repeating the last line, " It was easy ", stretching out each word. This, to me, is the essence of Mike Hammer and the appeal of Mickey Spillane's writing. Mike Hammer is a real "never let 'em see ya sweat" kind of guy, whose strength lies not only in his fists and his gun, but also in his moral convictions and sense of justice , with no exceptions.

Aha. Weist das den Weg für andere kommende Postmodernitäten ? Etwa die historisch-kritische Ausgabe von Konsaliks evre in 125 Bänden, nach der man die deutsche Literaturgeschichte nach '45 umschreiben muß ? Etwa die Reihe "Nette totalitäre Geister endlich unzensiert" ? Auf der linken Seite des Spektrums hatten wir ja schon Kochen mit Markus Wolff (bei Rotbuch). Vierzehn Jahre "Wende"-Politik haben wohl anästhesierende Wirkung. 1986 hieß es im Gründungspapier der Rotbuch-Krimis wörtlich, man wolle Autoren wie Spillane nicht verlegen, weil sie weder "politische noch literarische Originalität" haben.
