Extractions: "The greatest of living nature poets."- Los Angeles Times Gary Snyder teaches literature and wilderness thought at the University of California at Davis and lives with his family on San Juan Ridge in the Sierra foothills. He was born on May 8, 1930 in San Francisco, Calif., to Harold Alton and Lois (Willkie) Snyder and raised in Washington and Oregon on small farms. When he was 15 he climbed Mount St. Helens. He joined the Mazamas Climbing Club and the Wilderness Society, and climbed many of the northwest's major snow peaks. Snyder received a degree in literature and anthropology from Reed College in 1951. After briefly studying linguistics at Indiana University, he completed three years of graduate work in Asian languages at the University of California at Berkeley. He also worked on the docks in San Francisco, read Buddhist philosophy and wrote poetry. During the 1950's Snyder became involved with the San Francisco Beat movement. After Snyder and Jack Kerouac climbed Matterhorn Peak in the northern Sierra Nevada, Kerouac used Snyder as the model for Japhy Ryder, the itinerant mountain-climbing poet of Dharma Bums (1958), a man who took his Zen practice beyond the confines of formal study.

Extractions: You have to be careful writing about Gary Snyder, because he's such a Zen guy you get the feeling anything you write will be vastly inferior to silence. People tend to be impressed by Gary Snyder: Jack Kerouac was so knocked out by his mountain-climber courage and Buddhist calmness that he wrote one of his best books, 'The Dharma Bums,' about him. His poems, charged with the consciousness of Buddha-nature, made him a Beat celebrity as a young man, and he remains a widely respected symbol of a certain peaceful and contemplative literary state of mind. So I probably already deserve a sharp blow on the back with a stick for this inane blathering, and I'll just briefly summarize the pertinent facts of Snyder's life and then send you along to one of his poems, which I'll type in as an exercise in right mindfulness. He was born in California but grew up in the Pacific Northwest. He attended Reed College along with his friends Philip Whalen and Lew Welch , and then went to Berkeley to study Asian Languages. Extractions: Dec.11,2002. M.Sekine Recently, I read the anthology "Turtle Island" written by Gary Snyder. Gary Snyder is a poet and a priest of the Zen sect. His book "Turtle Island" won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1975. So, this book was written a few decades ago, in the heyday of the Beat Generation. It is one of the most popular anthologies and has had an influence on American literature after the 1970's. By accident, I stumbled across the poem "The Bath", that sings the praises of life and the human body within this anthology. I was deeply impressed with this poem. Gary Snyder denies modern culture and acts on his conviction that people should coexist with nature, and he began life anew at the foot of the Sierra Nevada in northern California. I'll let Gary explain. "When Native American thinkers and activists began to cease to use the word North America and to call the continent "Turtle Island" a few decades ago, it came to many of us as a wonderfully constructive move. The name itself comes from a number of Creation tales told by the Amerindian people... I learned to see one place to learn how to live, and see things as they are." He writes about the cancer of exploitation of heavy industry of perpetual growth of modern civilization that is in crisis, and the historical transfiguration of one place. And, he proposed a new lifestyle; adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle. Because the wilderness was lost rapidly, the anxious trend about the destruction of the wilderness rose in the West. Gary Snyder mastered Zen Buddhism whose intention is that the power is denied. He chose the wilderness in place of the counter situation of modern Western thought and he found an acceptable way of life in that place. I think it is natural for him to do so, belonging as he does to the beatnik generation. I envy him for having such a wonderful life as a poet. But, I am not one hundred percent in agreement with his chosen lifestyle, because I live a secular life.

His is the ethical voice in the time honored traditions of the American writer Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) and the Japanese Dogen (1200 - 1253), the founder of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism. American poet, Zen Buddhist, deep ecology philosopher, and environmentalist, Gary Snyder was born on May 8, 1930, In San Francisco, Cal. and grew up near Puget Sound in Washington state. As a young boy he developed a love for nature that has lasted all of his life. He also developed a love for mountain climbing and by age fifteen he had climbed Mount St. Helens. By age seventeen he had climbed most of the major peaks in the northwest United States. Snyder attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon, with his friends, Philip Whalen and Lew Welch, both future Beat poets. He graduated from Reed College with a degree in Literature and Anthropology. He did his post graduate work in Linguistics at Indiana University and at the University of California-Davis, where he studied Asian languages. He had a strong interest in Chinese and Japanese culture and poetry. This interest was shared by poet Kenneth Rexroth (1905 - 1982), who introduced Snyder to the Beat poetry crowd. It was Snyder who inspired the Zen Buddhist craze that swept through the Beat movement. Snyder has worked as a forest ranger, merchant seaman , mountain spotter, and a longshoreman on the San Francisco docks. He also organized mountain climbing expeditions with some of the Beat writers, and one in particular, with writer Jack Kerouac (1922 - 1969), climbing Matterhorn Peak in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, inspired Kerouac to use Snyder as the semi-mystical poet in his book "Dharma Bums" (1958).
