Extractions: First it's important to realize that there are various kinds of science fiction today, in which science functions differently. Michael Crichton builds a thriller around technical details, even tables of data; character and "art" are less emphasized. Ursula Le Guin writes anthropological science fiction, emphasizing the social sciences and subtleties of character. A recent trend is the "future historical" novel such as Maureen McHugh's China Mountain Zhang, in which scientific extrapolation provides details of a vivid future setting for everyday people. My own work explores the interactions between science and society, and the human beings caught between themeven when, as in A Door into Ocean, we are not sure at first who is "human." As a writer, you need to decide what role (if any) science extrapolation can play in your work. In fact, much of what is labeled "science fiction" today could as easily be labeled fantasy; and if your own style is distinctive enough, that may be the route for you. On the other hand, to take science seriously requires special attention. I can suggest some approaches which work for me.

Extractions: the shelf I the shelf II WisCon Carl Brandon WisCon is an annual gathering of feminist science fiction writers and readers held in Madison, Wisconsin. I have attended WisCon for the past six years. It is a great experience for anyone interested in science fiction, feminist or not. Many successful and long published authors in the genre attend regularly as well as new authors, publishers, agents, and editors. Guests in the past have included: Ursula LeGuin, Mary Doria Russell, Sheri Tepper, Charles deLint, Octavia Butler, and many many more. This year's Guest of Honor was Elizabeth Vonarburg. As a writer and (sometimes) a guffawing fanboy, it's a great experience to be able to talk one on one with these writers as well as the other readers. WisCon is also responsible for the birth of the James Tiptree Award , given annually to a work of science fiction that deals with gender issues. The Award is funded in large part by bake sales! This year's Tiptree winner was Molly Gloss for her novel Wild Life Most importantly, I leave WisCon each year with a huge list of authors and titles to add to my MUST READ pile! Below, you'll find my book list from WisCon 25.

Extractions: Brain Plague is one of those curiously infuriating books which operate from a basic premise that has you constantly saying "I don't believe this" right the way through, and yet still manages to amuse and even impress with some quality storytelling. Joan Slonczewski seems to have a talent for writing good characters, and of spinning a good yarn around them. However, with Brain Plagu e, I was put off by the central premise of the book, that a race of intelligent microbes could be introduced into the human brain and happily co-exist there. Nothing terribly original or surprising there, of course, as anyone remembering Greg Bear's early work Blood Music will recall. But Bear's microbial intelligence came from the collective, not the individual. Where Slonczewski differs is in giving each microbe its own little personality, in endowing the bugs with individual personhood, if you like. Makes for a different kind of storyline, for sure, as though the main protagonist has a million voices in her head, all giving her advice. When the microbes not only behave as tiny, fast-living humans (even down to setting up schools and nightclubs in the heroine's brain), but positively demand to have the same rights as humans, then the faintest suspicion is raised that Slonczewski may have pushed her idea just beyond the outrageous and well into the unbelievable range. Where Bear managed to raise an awful possibility from irresponsible tampering in microbial biology, Slonczewski tries to convince us that it could all be jolly good fun really. Sorry, I'm not buying it. Personally, I have enough trouble with just the one voice in my head, let alone a whole host of others. The story is well enough told, but falls at the first in the credibility stakes.

Extractions: Dr. Michael O'Conner [E221 Home] [Syllabus] [Assignments/Grading] [Attendance] ... [Student Posts] Critical Essay SummaryExample Two In an essay appearing in the Kenyon Review , Joan L. Slonczewski critiques two novels which are based on extraordinary visions of women whose lives are devoted to service. These novels, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood and The Magnificent Spinster by May Sarton, both raise interesting questions dealing with the role of women in society. Slonczewski both summarizes and gives opinions on the content of these novels. Focusing on The Handmaid's Tale , points are made dealing with the role of feminism, the theme of sexuality, the role of the Christian church, the subjugation of women, and the dangerous trends that are present in contemporary American society. The review begins by simply summarizing the important events that occur during the novel The Handmaid's Tale , in which a dystopia of the future is created where a cult based on religion rules the United States, which is now known as the Republic of Gilead. This society is plagued with widespread infertility, resulting from previous pollution of the environment, diseases that have been spread sexually, as well as other mistakes of the modern world. The women who have remained fertile have been summoned to become "handmaids", whose purpose is to bear children for the ruling males. Slonczewski points out that this is similar to the biblical handmaid Bilhah, who served her master Jacob because his wife Rachel was not able to conceive. Atwood's main character, Offred, is leading a difficult life, and the other female characters are working mostly as domestics. The exception is the Aunts, whose job is to train the handmaids and supervise hangings at the Salvaging Wall.
