Extractions: Ruskin made his first visit to Keswick in 1824, when he was 5 years old, and the memorial erected at Friars Crag after his death by the efforts of Canon Rawnsley, reminds us that 'the first thing I remember as an event in life was being taken by my nurse to the brow of Friar's Crag on Derwentwater'. That first view of Friar's Crag made a deep impression on the five year old boy, and years later he described the incident as 'the creation of the world for me'. After a brief stay in Keswick in 1826, the family came for a three week holiday in the Lakes in 1830. After a trip from Windermere to Hawkshead and Coniston, he wrote is experiences in Iteriad, a poem of 2310 lines which were highly competent for a boy of 11. Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris met whilst at Oxford taking Holy Orders. Here they gained inspiration from the writings of John Ruskin, and decided they wanted to become artists. Ruskin saw the work of Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as 'the dawn of a new era of art', and Burne-Jones went to London to seek out Rossetti. Ruskin became a great friend of Rossetti, Burne-Jones and Millais (who later married Ruskin's wife Effie), and was an eminent artist himself.

The natural vine leaves consent in grace and glow with the life of the old wood carving; and thought the modern white procelain image ill replaces the revoluition-deposed Madonna, and only pedestals of saints, and canopies, are left on the propping beams of the gateway and though the casque, and cooper's tools, and gardener's spade and ladder are little in accord in what was once stately in the gate and graceful in the winding stair the declining shadows of the past mingle with the hardship of the present day in no unkindly sadness; and the little angle of courtyard, if tenderly painted in the depression of its fate, has enough still to occupy as much of our best thought as maybe modestly claimed for his picture by any master not of the highest order. His work spans over many subjects, including art, religion, and sociological development. Uniquely, on the issue of work in society, he linked his thoughts on 19th century labor with the identity of the artist, insisting upon a preservation of craftsmanship in all methods of production. This connection between art and society was a tie among many of Ruskin's writings. John Ruskin, 1819-1900 Raised for a life with the ministry, Ruskin rejected this path after attending Oxford from 1836-40. Family travels during his childhood and adolescence introduced him to the world of art and nature, instilling an excitement for these subjects. His views published in "The Nature of Gothic" in The Stones of Venice (1851-3) connected his flare for art and architecture with his passion for the workman in society. Here, he suggests that all workers be considered artists, encouraging the craftsman to reflect his imagination onto the product. "[T]his is what we have to do with all our labourers; to look for the thoughtful part of them, and get that out of them, whatever we lose for it, whatever faults and errors we are obliged to take with it."

The spurious imitations of Præ-Raphaelite work represent the most minute leaves and other objects with sharp outlines, but with no variety of colour, and with none of the concealment, none of the infinity of nature. With this spurious work the walls of the Academy are half covered; of the true school one very small example may be pointed out, being hung so low that it might otherwise escpae attention. It is not by any means perfect, but still very lovely, the study of a calm pool in a mountain brook, by Mr. J. Dearle, No. 191, "Evening, on the Marchno, North Wales."
