From the start literature has had to contend with curious problems in Latin America. Early on the Spanish Inquisition established branches in capitals such as Lima and México. In the Index Librorum Prohibitorum (Index of Forbidden Books [c.1570]) it codified what books were to be censored. As Vargas Llosa has commented, one ought to acknowledge the Inquisition's intellectual acuity in recognizing literature's subversive powers. The importation of novels to colonial Spanish America was strictly prohibited by the Spanish Crown since the late sixteenth century. This prohibition, though, was not hermetic and books of chivalry, picaresque novels and even Cervantes's Don Quijote (1605, 1615) managed to circulate. However, the early Latin American writers were forced to channel their inventiveness differently. History texts, chronicles, accounts of the conquest and exploration of America become the only "legal" space where the native imagination can prosper. As a result, Fiction and History become united in a particularly curious way. What is history? and What is fiction? are questions that at some level or other can be asked in dealing with colonial texts and beyond. Two examples:

Extractions: During my college years, was the first Spanish-language novel that fully captured my attention. It haunted my thinking, a reaction comparable in intensity to my discovery of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights as an adolescent reader. Only partially grasping the nuances of words and styles in a language I was still learning, I became obsessed with understanding It fascinated me to the extent that I decided to become a scholar of Latin American literature. Decades later, after analyzing it for graduate seminars, discussing it in conference papers, and teaching it to generations of students, the novel still holds that same hallucinatory power for me. The powerful effect of has its source in the use of enigmas that involve readers in the process of understanding the complex relationship between past and present in early twentieth-century Mexico.

Extractions: E l cuento El día del derrumbe de Juan Rulfo,(1) se publica por primera vez en México en la Cultura núm. 334 (14 agosto 1955, pp. 3 y 5), y es de los cuentos que fueron agregados a El Llano en llamas tardíamente. Aparece luego en Anuario Cuento Mexicano 1955 (INBA, México,1956, pp. 291-300); en La Cultura en México núm. 400 (8 octubre 1969); en El Cuento (núm. 54, 1972, 145-150), y en la antología Crónicas de Latinoamérica , prólogo y notas de Ricardo Piglia (Joaquín Alvarez, Buenos Aires, 1968, pp. 13-24). Se incorpora al volumen El Llano en llamas , juntamente con La herencia de Matilde Arcángel , en la séptima edición aumentada (FCE, México, 1970). La escritura de este cuento es posterior a los que integran El Llano en llamas de 1953, y por ello hay tal vez más distancia en el tono respecto de los demás cuentos. Si consideramos la cuestión de la ironía, ya estaba presente desde 1953 particularmente en Anacleto Morones , pero en el cuento elegido para nuestro estudio, la ironía no llega a ser una sátira tan mordaz como en ese cuento.

Extractions: INTRODUCCIÓN Es el texto un mundo de ficciones? ¿Es el mundo un complejo ficcional que espera ser ficcionalizado mediante la escritura? ¿Es el texto, una ficción o una re-elaboración del texto del mundo? Estas cuestiones, en sí muy complejas, son reflejo de una inquietud en relación con una concepción de arte y su relación con la naturaleza. Esta es la inquietud que mueve este intento de aproximación a la obra literaria desde la semántica extensional; un intento porque apenas será un inicio en la utilización de esta perspectiva de análisis. Se trabajará con PEDRO PÁRAMO de Juan Rulfo, abordándose en una primera instancia, la construcción de la ficción a partir de silencios y voces, voces que son apenas susurros que se vinculan con las voces del hombre latinoamericano en relación con la búsqueda de identidad. Para considerar este primer submundo tomo una pregunta de Juan Rulfo en la voz de doña Eduviges - ¿Has oído alguna vez el quejido de un muerto? y a partir de ella, se buscará comprender la estructura que propone el autor. Se puede pensar que México constituye un caso especial en América Latina en términos de identidad, porque en él la conciencia de nacionalidad está más arraigada en una tradición histórica..
