Extractions: In America, if you want to save money you must spend time searching, researching, cross-referencing and counting-shopping. If you are willing to do the leg walk, you will at the end of the day, have a few more dollars in your pocket. No question there. If you do not or cannot spend the time, then spend the money and others will save you the time. Your basic over-priced convenience store is one example; another is an average restaurant. Our daily lives are often filled with these time versus money decisions. The examples are endless of the time versus money decisions. A fast-food or sit-down meal for two anywhere in this country is relatively quick and pricey in comparison to spending the time in a supermarket and making a home made meal. Eating out for two costs as much one night costs as much as four stay-at-home meals after shopping in a decent supermarket. Time-wise there is a huge difference as well. Eating out for two depending on the venue takes about 15 to 65 minutes versus one meal at home, after shopping, approximately 180 minutes. Do the math. In order to save two hours of our day we are willing to pay 400% more of our money versus supermarket shopping and stay-at-home cooking. The time versus money dilemma is a daily struggle-with few exceptions you rarely escape it. Another situation we rarely escape from is the incompetence of the employees most commercial establishments chose to hire in order "to pass on the savings to the consumer." How many of you have ever been to a home improvement outlet the size of a football stadium and noticed they have 27 types of cheap hammers costing under a buck but about 4 employees, three at checkout and one roaming around still pissed off he has $500 deductible on his dental plan?

Life-saving heart and kidney transplantations are now as routine as an oil change. Major medical discoveries continue to increase the quantity and quality of human existence. But what happens when science and technology become more than useful tools to better our lives? What are the consequences when science and technology are studied and applied as articles of religious faith? And how can we be safe from scientific good intentions gone wrong if the guiding principles and procedures established are absent of ethical consideration? These are but a few of the questions I pose in this series of articles written seek to examine the darker side of advanced technology. The field of science, as numerous other professions, has been seduced by the wiles and wealth of commercial interests. An interview or commentary by a scientist on television today virtually assures said scientist has a financial stake in whatever theory, agenda, product, procedure or pronouncement made. The days of old when scientists laboured for cures for the sake of humanity are mostly historical footnotes. In the world of today great deal of what a scientist writes, thinks and does must be scrutinized to the point of smearing the quality few that remain. It is part of the bad apple effect. A scientific paper written today cannot be taken as pure decent science if one considers the pressures of tenure, funding, publicity, politics and peer review.
