Extractions: 24th July 2002 Have you always wanted to write? My writing didn't actually "begin" until I was in my early twenties AFTER I finished Spirit of Independence. The Spirit Chronicles and Sardurvial Dissenting could be classified as religious fiction as much as fantasy horror. Is there any particular reason for choosing this genre? Though religion is a subject that has been the center of my personal attention for many years, my writing always tends to drift there without a conscious effort. I do have a story on deck that is completely different than any other I've written before. It's called YOU KILLED MY BROTHER and it is a thriller. Which is your favourite film from the Aliens series? Resurrection. I'm eagerly awaiting a crossover film between Aliens and the Predators. In our opinion the characters, plot and structure of Sardurvial Dissenting are noticeably better than Spirit of Independence. Do you agree and if so, has it been a natural progression or a conscious effort? I strongly agree with this. The idea for Spirit came well over ten years ago and that is when most of the groundwork was completed. Through the years I did revise Spirit of Independence, but could never get it to feel the way I wanted it to. I have a love/hate relationship with Spirit. I love it because I always felt it could be an extremely complex story that would captivate readers and make them say WOW, I want more. I hate it because I felt I didn't quite nail it the way I wanted to. With Sardurvial Dissenting, I believe I truly wrote a great story that will deliver that WOW for readers and have them wanting more.

Extractions: When an Angel falls from the grace of God and then falls from the grace of hell, what happens to him? This is the question that inspired the epic tale I call Sardurvial Dissenting. Though the answer seems simple, the path that must be journeyed isn't because it is said that once an Angel falls from grace, it can never return to the Heaven's again. Extractions: Spirit of Independence: Reviews H ere we have a novel by a publisher that's causing quite a stir in the horror world via its Spectral Visions imprint. There are quite a few titles to check out, and this is the first one I've come across - the inaugural volume in a four book series that promises to change the reader's (after) life. Travis Winter is the Spirit of Independence. Murdered in the Second World War, he was kidnapped by demons before being rescued and recruited into the ranks of divine knights called Spirits. For theres another war raging that has even greater consequences than WWII, one involving Heaven and Hell with Earth and its inhabitants slap bang in the middle Fast-forward to the present and when Winters granddaughter Amanda is put in danger, he materializes to save her. But his actions set off a chain of events which threaten both lots of combatants. As the Devil pleads his case, arguing that God is the one who uses humanity for his own sport, the lines between good and evil become increasingly vague, threatening the safe haven of Chova - a kind of middle ground between realms. And when the third antichrist is born, it seems that Armageddon cant be too far away. Will the Spirit of Independence be able to save humanity, save his family, and save the day? Its always a difficult thing, kicking off the first in a series of novels. You have to lay the groundwork for whats to come, introduce characters that might not be developed fully until the next book, or even the one after that. And you have to find some way of making it a self-contained story in its own right, yet still leave the reader with the sense there is more to come On the whole, Keith Rommel does all of this very well. Although the premise is far from fresh (it stretches back as far as Paradise Lost, and there are more than a few nods to The Prophecy films I think), the author does manage to put his own personal spin on it.

Extractions: "Spirit of Independence: Repentance" is Keith Rommel's second novel in the "Spirit of Independence" series. The main character is the spirit Travis now on the path to redemption, trying to change the evil men do by direct intervention. Not the easiest task when he is up against Navarro (the devil), Navarro uses every opportunity he gets to make Travis fail and win him over to his side. I personally feel saying this is a Fantasy novel would be somewhat wrong. In many ways there is lots of elements of fantasy that Keith Rommel uses in the novel, the use of illusions, shifting between "worlds" and so on... However I would say that the main theme of this novel is more religious in nature, the fight between God and the Devil, good versus bad and thus the magic is used more in a biblical sense, if you see what I mean. Keith Rommel is without doubt a talented author, he writes in a language that's easy to follow and with "Spirit of Independence - Repentance" he has created a novel that's a real attention grabber from the first page. He moves ahead at a fast pace, telling a story that's filled with action, all the time without losing track of the underlying theme, good versus evil.
Extractions: Gene William, www.Bookreview.ws Travis Winter, the Spirit of Independence, was viciously murdered in World War II. Soon after his untimely death, he discovers he is a chosen celestial knight; a new breed of Angel destined to fight the age-old war between Heaven and Hell. Yet, confusion reigns for Travis when he is pulled into Hell and confronted by the Devil himself... a saddened creature who begs only to be heard. Freed by a band of Angels sent to rescue him, Travis rejects the Devil's plea and begins a fifty-year-long odyssey to uncover the true reasons why Heaven and Hell war. Four books in the Spirit Chronicles are currently complete and three are awaiting forthcoming release.
Extractions: Lesley Travis Winter, a soldier in WW1, is murdered by a colleague whilst out on manoeuvres. He wakes up to find that he has been chosen to be the Spirit of Independence, dedicated to upholding the word of God and helping new spirits to pass into Heaven. However, he soon begins to think that maybe things are not quite as they seem. The Devil is quite a nice guy really and God seems awfully full of himself... Surely this cannot be correct! Spirit of Independence is a new variation on the old theme of Good versus Evil. It takes place in both the spirit plain and also the real world and investigates the true reason as to why heaven and hell continually battle for supremacy. The story is fast paced and twists and turns like a "twisty turny thing" (okay I may have 'borrowed' that from Blackadder). One thing it is NOT is predictable! The writing style is unusual. Each chapter is written in the fist person but from the point of view of a different character. I found this a little discomforting to start with but it soon hooked me and I found the whole book impossible to put down.
Extractions: But I will leave that for you to find out, if this is your taste in literature. I will only add that I found the milieu cliché and the editing slack. The most interesting aspect of the story, for me, was the presentation of viewpoint. Spirit of Independence is written in first person, each chapter being a different first person, though many chapters return to Travis' perspective.
