    Extractions: (Click for a larger photo) James Whitcomb Riley was born in 1849 in Greenfield, Indiana. He tried out many jobs in his youth, including sign painting and acting in a traveling medicine show. In 1877 he went to work for the Anderson (Indiana) Democrat as a writer. Frustrated with the rejection letters for his verse he was receiving from eastern publications, he wrote a poem called “Leonainie” signed “E. A. P.” - for Edgar Allan Poe. The poem was quickly circulated, thus providing proof to a smug Riley that only poems written by “a genius known to fame” could be published. When he revealed that it was a hoax he was promplty fired - but not because of the deception. The editor of a rival paper, the Kokomo Dispatch , was the one who had linked poem to Poe, thus achieving attention the editors of the Anderson Democrat thought they deserved.

    Extractions: Visited: 21 August 2001 In the middle of Indianapolis lays the third largest cemetery in the United States. Crown Hill is the burial site of one President and three Vice Presidents. I visited on a beautiful summer day while traveling around Indiana doing genealogical research . Since that's how I spend my vacations, I was one of the few there who wasn't being paid to tend the grounds that Tuesday morning. After stopping in at the office to pick up a map, I was told to follow the white line which would take me past all the famous graves. This white line was literally painted on the road leading from the office, under 38th Street (a major Indianapolis thoroughfare) and into the cemetery. Piece of cake... They must have recently repaved some of the paths because, quite abruptly, the white line disappeared. No problem, I just reverted to the tried and true method of finding the highest point in the cemetery. More often than not, the Presidents are buried there. The "Crown" of Crown Hill cemetery is occupied not by a politician, but by the beloved Hoosier poet, James Whitcomb Riley. From his grave, I enjoyed a beautiful view of downtown Indy with nothing above but the clear azure.

Nan Hendrickson, a retired speech clinician from the Franklin Township School System, was the guest speaker for the tea. Nan is an James Whitcomb Riley expert. Everyone attending the tea enjoyed Nan's presentation and several people added information about their own experiences involving Riley's homes, etc. The library also received information from the Riley Home in Greenfield and the Riley Home in Lockerbie Square which was handed out to everyone attending the tea. Mr. and Mrs. Swadener, regular library patrons, brought several friends to the tea with them and filled up our largest table. Several teaches from Central Elementary and South Grove Elementary attended the tea. Student volunteers acted as waiters and waitresses for the tea.

The preface to his Poems (1913) suggests that 'his poems deserve to be better known...' which is a sentiment that many would disagree with, especially in the light of 'A Nonsense Rhyme': Ringlty-Jing! Riley's forte was the dialect poem, indeed, his dialect poems earned him the name of The Hoosier Poet, from the region where he was born and whose accents he borrowed. As time went on, however, he looked further afield for his 'voices'. 'Dot Leedle Boy' for example, is a poem told in a sort of Dutch dialect. At least I think it's Dutch. It could be German. Or even Swahili. Ot's a leedle Gristmas story
