   Extractions: Home EARLY LIFE One of the most popular poets in American history, James Whitcomb Riley was born in Greenfield, Indiana, the second son and third of six children raised by Reuben A.a Civil War veteran and lawyerand Elizabeth (Marine) Riley. At an early age Riley discovered that he disliked the "iron discipline" of school life but enjoyed books. As a child, Riley often accompanied his father (a noted political orator) on trips to the Hancock County courthouse, where he observed the manners and mores of country society, as well as the countrified dialect he later used in his poetry. RESTLESS YOUTH "In my dreamy way I did a little of a number of things fairly wellsang, played the guitar and violin, acted, painted signs and wrote poetry. My father did not encourage my verse-making for he thought it too visionary, and being a visionary himself, he believed he understood the dangers of following the promptings of the poetic temperament. I doubted if anything would come of the verse-writing myself." James Whitcomb Riley on his younger days Leaving school at age 16, Riley first attempted to read law in his father's office. Possessed of a wanderlust, however, Riley turned to another pursuitart. He and some other youths, which he dubbed "the Graphics," traveled the Indiana countryside as sign, house and ornamental painters. He later joined a traveling wagon show as an advance agent. In 1873, Riley returned to Greenfield and worked for the town's newspaper. A year earlier, his poetry, under the name "Jay Whit," had first appeared in the

As a young man, he traveled summers with Dr. S. B. McCrillus, a local medicine man. Riley painted signs for McCrillus and helped put on a show in the towns where they stopped to sell medicine. When Riley came to town to work as a reporter for the Anderson Democrat, he was familiar with the city. During this period he began to write seriously. The poetry flowed from his pen onto the news columns. The face of the Democrat took on a whole new look. An aspiring artist named Samuel Richards cleverly illustrated Riley's poems. Even advertisements for local retail stores and businesses were set to rhyme. Riley "hung out" with the newspapermen at the hotel in the evenings, where is was frequently teased about the quality of his poetry by the editor of the rival Herald. One night, during a discussion about writing, he told the group that any poem by a well-known author would be immediately accepted because of the author's celebrity alone. To prove his point, he wrote a poem, "Leonainie", in the style of Edgar Allen Poe and sent it to a newspaper friend in Kokomo, who was in on the joke. The poem drew national attention and even drew praise from his critical editor. When an authority on Poe wanted to see the manuscript, some friends of Riley's created a hand-written poem on the flyleaf of an old book. However, the fraud was discovered.

The wooden planked National Road, which American pioneers and settlers used to travel to the western half of the nation, ran right through Greenfield. The area was diverse in culture, with people from many different homelands, though outwardly appearing as rough wilderness and newly settled country. The critic, Hamlin Garland, described it after a visit by saying, "To my eyes it was the most unpromising field for art, especially for the art of verse. The landscape had no hills, no lakes, no streams of any movement or beauty. Ragged fence-rows, flat and dusty roads, fields of wheat alternating with clumps of trees - these were the features of a country which to me was utterly commonplace - and yet from this dusty, drab, unpromising environment, Riley had been able to draw the honey of woodland poesy, a sweet in which a native fragrance as of basswood and buckwheat bloom mingled with hints of an English meadow and the tang of a Canada thistle." Riley's father, being a frontier politician and lawyer, named his son after an Indiana governor, James Whitcomb. Riley's mother was, of course, a homemaker, and she also wrote poetry. Riley had a difficult time academically, but possessed a talent for language, especially that of his own people. His father wanted him to become a lawyer, but Riley did not apply himself to law. For a time he traveled the American Midwest as a sign painter. He also traveled with a medicine salesman, and drew crowds by playing songs and performing impersonations of people he had met in his travels.

    Extractions: Home An Indianapolis poet who had recently begun to garner attention for his work in the Indianapolis Journal was out driving with a friend in the city one afternoon in 1880 when he came upon a shady spot at the corner of Lockerbie and East Streets. While taking in the sights, the onetime traveling sign painter chanced to see a young lady drive past in a small, clay-colored carriage, stop, and enter a stately brick home. Entranced by what he had seen, the Hoosier writer returned to the area a few days later. "Walking back to the office, I repeated the phrase with every footstepLockerbie StreetLockerbie Street. The words clung to me like tickseed to a tiger," he said. From the experience he wrote the poem "Lockerbie Street," which was published in the Journal . The work lauded the thoroughfare for offering relief "from the clangor and din" of the big city and offering "sheltering shade" to those who wandered its path. The day the poem appeared the poet discovered that his office had been stuffed full of flowers from grateful Lockerbie Street residents. The bard in question
