In pursuing this ideal, he lived a life of radical religion, politics, and art in which nature was a central and centering force. Born in 1905 in the midwest, as a teenager he dropped out of school and hopped a freight train to the West Coast in order to cultivate the art of being a "perceiving organism and moral agent." Settling in San Francisco, he camped often in the Sierras, developing a mystical vision of nature and love that is reflected in his poetry, his many essays, and a play in verse. Part of the depth of Rexroth's vision arises from his insistence on turning the contemplative gaze on the depravations of society as well as the beauty of nature. Darkness enriches his vision of light, and illumination is found in a night-bound world. In Time Is the Mercy of Eternity, he stands at the edge of a Sierra cliff looking at the San Joaquin Valley below: Far away the writhing city Burns in a fire of transcendence And commodities. This attitude caused many critics to call him one of the forerunners of the Beat move- ment. In the 1950s , he served as a mentor of sorts to the en- tire Beat scene happening in San Francisco. In 1952, he pub- lished the book length story poem, The Dragon and the Uni- corn that explores the nature of love. In Defense of the Earth published in 1956 contains love poetry, poems directed toward young people, and translations of Japanese poetry.

Il est l'un des principaux protagonistes de l'émergence des poètes beat, mais ne s'est jamais considéré comme un membre de la Beat Generation. Au début des années 50, Rexroth est déjà le leader d'un mouvement culturel, une "renaissance poétique" à San Francisco, qui vise à faire de la ville californienne une place forte de la culture. En 1953, alors que la renaissance poétique de San Francisco est une idée bien installée, un jeune poète new-yorkais, Allen Ginsberg , frappe à la porte de Rexroth avec une lettre d'introduction écrite par William Carlos Williams. Parmi les poètes qui gravitent autour de Rexroth se trouvent de jeunes débutants, comme Gary Snyder Michael McClure et Philip Whalen . En octobre 1955, Rexroth utilise sa réputation pour organiser une lecture de poésie mettant en scène ces jeunes poètes. Extractions: (December 22,1905 - June 6, 1982) An Introduction Many words could be used to describe Kenneth Rexroth: poet, philosopher, anarchist, translator, painter, essayist, columnist. Over the course of his life he took on many roles. Not well known for such, he started out as a painter in the mid-west. He continued to paint, but poetry became his major occupation, and his most lauded achievement. Though he never received the recognition he thought he deserved, Rexroth is considered a major figure in twentieth century American poetry. An experimenter, his work was at different times associated with many different poetic styles: cubist, imagist, the beats. He really belonged to none of these movements and was always a fierce individualist. Reading through his collected poems , one can see the change in styles from his early abstract cubist works, to his later verses, simple and clear inspired by eastern poets. Besides a poet, Rexroth was a prodigious essayist . Though he had very little formal schooling, he was extremely well read. He compiled two books of what he considered classics of literature

The letters are both personal and business-related. There is also some outgoing correspondence from James and Joanne Randall concerning various publications of the press. Significant correspondence deals with the production of books published by the Press, but there are also personal letters with many important contemporary poets.
