Extractions: BAYOU BROOD... The quirky Louisanna folks in Tim Gautreaux's story collection Welding with Children are as fully realized and richly drawn as any in recent fiction. There's Marvin, who has rechristened himself Big Blade in homage to the discount bowie knife he uses in hopes of terrifying the victims of his latest inept crime spree. But when he attempts to rob 85-year-old Mrs. Landreneaux he finds himself waylaid by her nonstop chatter, good cooking, and a group of nosey card-playing neighbors. In the title piece, Burton tries to rectify his own lousy parenting by doing a better job with the children of his four unwed daughters. These characters are all flawed, but they share a common decency and the belief that even the bleakest situation can be somehow improved. And in the hands of this warm and funny writer they usually are. Contributed by Dan Bogey, Director, Clearfield County Public Library Federation, Curwensville, PA. Word of Mouth Author Index.

Extractions: If I Don't Six Doubleday HHH It is a familiar scene: An overflowing stadium of rambunctious college students, Go Blue! signs swaying in the breeze, and the familiar Michigan fight song permeating the air. The adrenaline starts pumping in the fans as the revered players begin their stampede onto the field. But, for a moment, imagine not being the fan but, rather, the anxious player running onto the field. Imagine the butterflies squirming as the pressure slowly mounts. In his new novel, "If I Don't Six," former college football player Elwood Reid gives the inside story of a Big Ten player. Reid's honest portrayal leaves little to the imagination. Reid's story is one of blood, pain and glory. It takes the reader into the huddle in a candid account about the true nature of college football. Reid recalls the hazy line between excitement and horror that defines the life of an athlete in a big-time Division One program. Starting from the untold drama of the recruitment process, Reid lays out the science of entering the world of the "student-athlete." In any Big-Ten football program, such as that of the storied Wolverine tradition, football is not just a game, and the participants are not merely athletes. Their every action will define the nature of thousands of supporting fans and, therefore, must be neurotically planned and rehearsed. The result of this fanaticism is the unbelievable preparation and fulfillment of the existence Elwood Reid lays out in vivid, and sometimes painful detail.

Extractions: By Nicole Dabbous For the Daily In Fairbanks, Alaska, the world seems safe. Jack and his friends chase construction jobs during the day and leave in the evening to find solace in a beer or a joint. They build and expand structures and tear down the forests. But outside of Fairbanks, man is no longer king. When the sun sets over the untouched Alaskan backdrop, nature's threat rises to shadow mankind's illusive light. In Elwood Reid's "Midnight Sun," Jack leaves the safe haven of Fairbanks and enters on a journey into the depths of the Alaskan wilderness, in search of one girl, one community and himself. As the narrator, Jack, explains, in Alaska "everybody was searching for something." No one just goes there. Reid himself journeyed to Alaska after getting his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. Like Jack, Reid too went looking. And they both found that regardless of the muscle and one's notion of control, man is subject to failure and to loss of control. While still in his undergraduate years, Reid played football for the University of Michigan. "I was a jock, but I loved to read," he said. Reid knew his passion, but lacked the determination to achieve his desires. He went to Alaska and worked in construction where he, again, neglected his mind and found control through his body. It was here where he understood where his actions might lead him.
