He was trained in Egypt in the universal mysteries, which included math, geometry, astronomy, music, harmonics, and intervals, especially as they relate to states of consciousness. Pythagoras established an influential school in Croton (now in southern Italy) that had many followerscalled akousmatics and an inner circle of disciples known as mathematikoi . The mathematikoi Amos Bronson Alcott undoubtedly had Pythagoras in mind when he formed his Fruitlands commune in 1843.

Extractions: Died: about 500 BC in Metapontum, Lucania Pythagoras of Samos was a Greek philosopher responsible for important developments in mathematics, astronomy and the theory of music. He left Samos because of the tyrant who ruled there and went to southern Italy about 532 BC. He founded a philosophical and religious school in Croton that had many followers. Although the theorem now known as Pythagoras's theorem was known to the Babylonians 1000 years earlier he may have been the first to prove it. Of his actual work nothing is known. His school practiced secrecy and communalism making it hard to distinguish between the work of Pythagoras and that of his followers. His school made outstanding contributions to mathematics. Pythagoreans believed that all relations could be reduced to number relations. This generalization stemmed from observations in music, mathematics and astronomy. The Pythagoreans noticed that vibrating strings produce harmonious tones when the ratios of the lengths of the strings are whole numbers, and that these ratios could be extended to other instruments. The most important discovery of this school was the fact that the diagonal of a square is not a rational multiple of its side. This result showed the existence of irrational numbers. Not only did this disturb Greek mathematics but the Pythagoreans' own belief that whole numbers and their ratios could account for geometrical properties was challenged by their own results.

The earliest reference to him, indeed, is practically a contemporary one. Some verses are quoted from Xenophanes , in which we are told that Pythagoras once heard a dog howling and appealed to its master not to beat it, as he recognized the voice of a departed friend. From this we know that he taught the doctrine of transmigration. Heraclitus , in the next generation, speaks of his having carried scientific investigation ( historiê ) further than any one, though he made use of it for purposes of imposture. Later, though still within the century, Herodotus speaks of him as "not the weakest scientific man ( sophistês ) among the Hellenes," and he says he had been told by the Greeks of the Hellespont that the legendary Scythian Salmoxis had been a slave of Pythagoras at Samos . He does not believe that; for he knew Salmoxis lived many years before Pythagoras . The story, however, is evidence that
