Extractions: Seneca Definition: PLAUTUS The greatest Roman comic playwright, Titus Maccius Plautus was born c . 254 B.C. in Umbria and died in 184. He may have joined a traveling acting group that performed farces. After leaving Umbria, he became a Roman soldier. While stationed in southern Italy he was exposed to the Greek New Comedy and the plays of Menander. When his business plans failed, Plautus tried writing comedies and made a success of it by using puns and slapstick gags to make plays entertaining enough to compete with the games for audience attention. Plautus eventually obtained Roman citizenship and was entitled to three names. Plautus probably refers to his flatfeet; Maccius to his comedic nature. He was reputed to have written 130 pieces (based on Greek New Comedy), of which 21 survive, including

Titus Maccius Plautus, comic playwright of the Roman Republic ; the years of his life are uncertain, but his plays were first produced between about 205 and 184 B.C.E. Twenty-one plays survive. Plautus's comedies, which are the earliest surviving intact works in Latin literature , are all adaptations of Greek models for a Roman audience. The characters remain in Greek settings, or perhaps a Greek setting imagined by a Roman. Mit diesem Satz könnte man seine Biographie beenden: Viel mehr ist nämlich nicht über sein Leben bekannt. Alles, was wir mehr oder weniger über ihn wissen, ist sein Werk: Insgesamt 20 seiner Komödien, die die ältesten, höherstehenden und vollständig erhaltenen Zeugnisse lateinischer Schriftkultur bilden, sind uns noch durch mittelalterliche Abschriften überliefert. Die Komödien des Plautus beruhen auf griechischen Originalen. Hier seien als Vorlagen die Komödien des Menander genannt. Plautus hat sie aber nicht Wort für Wort einfach in die lateinische Sprache übersetzt. Nein, das ist nicht das Ehepaar Plautus! Vielmehr wird er sie an manchen Stellen dem Geschmacke des römischen Publikums angepasst haben, hier und da ein paar eigene, originelle Ideen eingearbeitet haben, hier und da schwierige Passagen, die dem römischen Publikum nicht verständlich oder langweilig waren, ausgelassen haben. Manchmal sogar verknüpfte er für eine seiner Komödien Szenen aus mehreren Vorlagen. Die Komödien des Plautus sind also keine hundertprozentigen Kopien griechischer Originale, sondern können auch eine große Originalität für sich beanspruchen. Nein, das sind nicht Brutus und Cassius, obwohl die Entschlossenheit in ihren Gesichtern einem Caesar das Fürchten lehren könnte!

Extractions: Plautus, the tortoise in Arcadia In the play Arcadia, Plautus is simply described as a form of "paperweight" used to hold down Septimus' papers on his desk. However, Plautus is a character that links the past and future times. As the action of the play "shuttles back and forth" between the early nineteenth century and the present day, the state of the room and props never change. In this sense, Plautus is synonymous to Lightning of modern times. Septimus and Valentine represent the main care-givers to the tortoise. For example, in one scene Septimus feeds Plautus an apple. In another, Valentine gives Lightning pieces of lettuce from his sandwich. Wherever the tortoise is placed at the end of a scene in one time period, he is in the same position in the next, providing a link between the two distinct times. Plautus is a seemingly unimportant aspect of the story until the end, when Hannah is attempting to find the identity of the hermit of Sidley Park. Ji v mládí odeel do Øíma, kde si vydìlal nìjaké peníze jako divadelní sluha. Penìz pouil k obchodování, ale tìce neuspìl a zadluil se. Dal se poté najmout k tìké práci v mlýnì, kde také údajnì napsal své první komedie. Jeliko se setkaly s úspìchem, pokraèoval Plautus v jejich psaní i pozdìji a zøejmì dosáhl opìt blahobytu. Právì Plautem vyvrcholila v neèekanì brzké dobì latinská verovaná komedie. Byl autorem plodným a nadaným a psal a do své smrti roku 184 pøed n.l. Plautus napsal prý asi 130 komedií, ale ji Varro za bezpeènì jeho oznaèil pouze 21 z tohoto poètu. Jeho hry jsou psány na øecké motivy, které vak autor èasto velmi radikálnì mìnil a dal vzniknout øímskému divadlu. Èasto vypoutìl celé scény, pøidával aktuální naráky, spojoval motivy dvou pøedloh do jedné atd. Plautovy vtipy mají daleko k jemnosti, jsou vulgární (doslovnì pøeloeno to znamená lidové, co souhlasí), èasto je dávána pøednost frace pøed propracovanými postavami. Teprve poslední komedie jsou propracované i charakterovì. Po celou dobu psaní svých dìl ovládal Plautus mistrnì latinu, ze které vydímal høíèky do té doby nevídané. Plautus mìl obrovský úspìch u ve své dobì - bylo a s podivem, jak tradiènì krvelaèné øímské publikum navtìvovalo divadlo, aby shlédlo Plautovy hry. Plautus mìl také tìstí, e za svou satiru tradièních hodnot nepykal - jiný autor Naevius za to byl poslán do vyhnanství. Moná to bylo proto, e pøestoe v mnoha hlavních rolích vystupují otroci, témìø vechny hry se odehrávají v Øecku. Stejnì jako se hrál v antice, byly jeho hry sledovány i ve støedovìku a jsou podklady pro mnohé známé autory (Moliére, Shakespeare)

Lindsay: The Syntax of Plautus and An Introduction to Latin Textual Emendation . These two books help explain how Plautus's Latin is different from Cicero's or Virgil's and how editors establish the texts that we read. The Syntax of Plautus covers constructions like Plautus's free use of the supine for purpose (for example, mater pompam me spectatum duxit , "Mother took me to see the procession," Cistellaria 90 ) or his colloquial use of neuter pronouns no matter what gender the antecedent might be. It is a useful companion to any early Latin text, including in particular Terence's plays. An Introduction to Latin Textual Emendation Based on the Text of Plautus shows how textual criticism works, using the manuscript tradition of Plautus as the basis for discussion. Textual criticism is the method of determining what an author actually wrote, given one or more manuscripts, generally much later than the author's original, containing various errors of transcription. For Plautus, our evidence includes one manuscript from the fourth century AD (that is, some 500 years after Plautus lived), one from the tenth century AD, two from the eleventh, and a handful of later manuscripts, many of which are copied from those earlier ones. These manuscripts do not always agree, and it is the job of the textual critic (the editor) to determine which words are right and which words are wrong. Lindsay's book explains the principles for doing so, principles which are applicable to all classical texts, Greek as well as Latin.

Next Many characters from classical comedy are memorable: the miles gloriosus, or braggart soldier, on whom (in part) the character of Falstaff is based; the senex* ("old man"), an elderly parent who uses his authority or the law to thwart the young lovers; Egeus has this role in A Midsummer Night's Dream One of Shakespeare's earliest comedies is based closely upon two Latin originals. The Comedy of Errors takes the plots of two plays by Plautus: the Menaechmi, a play about long separated twins who are mistaken for each other and are eventually reunited; and the Amphitruo, where masters and servants become confused.
