3 O'Clock Hi: Guide To Philanthropy For Independently Poor Three O'clock Hi A Guide to Philanthropy for the Independently Poor marc OlmstedRecently, in the Post Office, I had the opportunity to voluntarily pay 7 http://www.beingalivela.org/news1099/10993oclockhi.html
Extractions: As a homeless man begged for change on the Post Office sidewalk, a confluence of moral choices presented itself. Breast cancer, APLA, the man with the cup. Did it make sense for me to give when I was on the receiving end myself? Does that negate my obligation, or mandate it? If so, how much to give, and to whom? As a gay socialist adolescent (or pinkie pinko, if you prefer), I thought it self-evident that the cure for poverty was the equal distribution of income. After all, if you look at the world's wealth as an eight-piece pie, the richest 2% of the population has about four pieces, the middle 38% has about three, and the bottom 60% are left with one. Obviously, accumulated wealth is directly related to widespread poverty. I was not the first to come to this conclusion. Those who reached it before me, however, came up with a miserable solution called communism. It seems that an economy without a profit motive is an economy without any motive; equal distribution of wealth actually results in equal distribution of poverty. Okay, but it only seems fair that the rich should part with at least a couple of pieces of the pie; arguably they dowith taxes and philanthropy. The math still works out to the very few with very much, and the very many with very little. If those in the middle don't share some of their forkfuls of pie as well, those at the bottom are left with crumbs. If you are like me, you find your three squares a day harder to enjoy when someone else is living on one. But suppose, because a life-threatening illness has skewered your entire life plan, you're just barely in the middle. You might be on disability, or if you're still working, your career might have gone into low gear to save on wear and tear and the salary isn't what it might have been. Or you might make a lot but owe just as much. Simply put, how do you reconcile your conscience with your car insurance?
LAND FORUM For marc Treib, who was assigned the role of provocateur of the evening, Olmstedis uninteresting. Based on that strictly formalistic indictment, Treib http://www.spacemakerpress.com/lfjune98/lfpage08.htm
Extractions: In response to slides of the various park renovations by Franklin's firm, Andropogon, the discussion that followed centered primarily around the question of renovation versus regeneration of Olmsted parks. What was strangely missing, from the panelists and the audience as well, was a discussion of what the approach to Olmsted should or could be, rather than whether the physical manifestation of his ideas are of relevance today. To reduce Olmsted to questions of form is to ignore his vast and enduring contribution. To try to understand how he was able to produce culture, not just represent it, by proposing an alternative way of living in cities, is what this profession, which at the moment is trying very hard to become more effective and visible, would profit most from doing. Anita Berrizbeitia is assistant professor of landscape architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
