Extractions: Welcome Les Murray is Australia's leading poet and one of the greatest contemporary poets writing in English. Les Murray has won many literary awards, including the Grace Leven Prize (1980 and 1990), the Petrarch Prize (1995), and the prestigious TS Eliot Award (1996). In 1999 he was awarded the Queens Gold Medal for Poetry on the recommendation of Ted Hughes. His latest collection to be published in the US was voted a Notable Book for 2001 by the American Library Association. He has also recently been honoured by the Australian Academy of the Humanities , where he has been elected an Honorary Fellow. The New Collected Poems were published in the UK in February this year by Carcanet . This follows the new Australian collected edition from Duffy and Snellgrove , published August last year. The new editions include poems published between 1965 and 2000 - adding Conscious and Verbal to the list of source titles. The Australian edition is particularly recommended, as it comes with a CD recording of Les Murray some of the poems.

Suicide Summary The narrator was ridiculed during adolescence because he was fat and socially inept at school. He had one friend, Marion, "a slender girl who came up on holidays from the city / to my cousin's farm." He liked to show-off to others, but couldn't express his feelings, especially to Marion, who he only now realizes was "my first love." At the age of 19, during her nursing training, "she had a fatal accident / alone, at night, they said, with a lethal injection / and was spared from seeing what my school did to the world." [28 lines] Commentary This poem expresses so well the feelings of a sensitive adolescent outcast (a poet, no less), who is attracted to a similarly alienated young woman. While he appears to have survived the terrors of adolescence, his friend did not. Her "fatal accident / alone, at night" sounds suspiciously like suicide.
