Extractions: In Memory of Sam Moskowitz This edition of Forecast is dedicated to the late Sam Moskowitz. Mr. Moskowitz, who also edited Hugo Gernsback's novel "Ultimate World", passed away April 15th 1997. Sam Moskowitz was considered the world's foremost authority on science fiction. His Russian immigrant parents were to poor to send him to college. He began his career driving a truck in New York, and ended it in 1965 editing a trade publication. College would not have helped him anyway. From the moment he first leafed through a copy of "Astounding Stories" at his father's candy store, his main interest in life was science fiction, which was not offered in college in those days. It would not be until Moskowitz himself taught the first course, at City college in New York, in 1953. Moskowitz established himself as an authority in a young field. Although H.G. Wells and Jules Verne had been writing science fiction during the 19th century, it had not been regarded as a separate genre, or even give it's name until a young immigrant from Luxembourg named Hugo Gernsback published the first issue of "Amazing Stories," the first magazine devoted exclusively to what Gernsback called "Scientifiction."

Extractions: Hugo Gernsback occupies the same position in relation to the history of science fiction as George Washington does in relation to the history of the United States. There was land, a government, and a people on this continent long before 1776, just as there was science fiction published long before 1926. The thirteen colonies were not an independent nation before 1776 and might not have become so without George Washington, and there were no science fiction magazines before 1926 and their existence can be credited completely to Hugo Gernsback. That is why, just as George Washington is called by the historians of the United States "the father of our country," Hugo Gernsback is called by literary historians "the father of science fiction." Hugo Gernsback has earned another great distinction in the field of science fiction beyond that as its inaugural publisher in a genre magazine. In a literary form, whose brightest aspect is prophecy, he stands in the front rank as one of the greatest prophets of them all. Some of the definitions here have been obtained over the internet in the bad old days where there were no flashy www interfaces to the net, over gopher and ftp links, so not only am I unable to credit the sources I found them, but also I am not exactly sure of their autenticity. Some of the definitions, I think, I got from the gopher server at Lysator. The definitions I have personally extracted from reference works and such are always credited below the excerpt, and I say when I am quoting verbatim or I am paraphrasing stuff taken from conversations etc. Hope you enjoy this. I can think of few authors and poets encompassed in the science fiction and fantasy field more deserving of special attention. Unlike H. P. Lovecraft's snobbery of the science fiction magazines as a media for the publication of his material, Clark Ashton Smith's link-up with Hugo Gernsback and the Wonder Stories group of magazines, with its lack of length restrictions, provided one of the most fruitful outlets of his career. Never again did he write so much, so well in so short a time. Clark Ashton Smith understood the world around him, sex and life's rules far better than H. P. Lovecraft despite his even more intense hermit-like existence. A brief tale like "The Mother of Toads" is a masterpiece only because Smith's understanding of the world's workings gives it allegorical depth. There is greatness in a few lines and certain passages in Smith's poetry, but he sacrificed his shining promise in verse on the altar of an unabridged dictionary.

Extractions: (This article originally appeared in Ed Meskys' fanzine, NIEKAS #33, 1985) Regarding your [Ed Meskys'] comments about myself and Robert Heinlein in your Bumbejimas column in NIEKAS 32: I was working full time supervising a staff of five editors for E.W. Williams Publications and told them I simply couldn't do more than six a year, since each article involved reading every work the author covered had written and every known bit of information about them, in addition to personally contacting them if they were still alive. We agreed on six a year to be run every other month in AMAZING STORIES and these were to be on contemporary leaders such as Robert A. Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov and so on. I also agreed to select a reprint a month and supply an historical introduction for each magazine. The first author to be profiled was Robert A. Heinlein. I owned and read everything by Heinlein published through to 1961 as well as everything written about him. I had first personally met him at the June 2, 1940 meeting of The Queens Science Fiction League Chapter in Astoria, New York. At that time he gave a talk outlining his career to that date and comparing the Queens Chapter to the one in Los Angeles. I met him again in 1954 and had minor business dealings involving books which tied in with Vol Molsworth, an Australian fan. I wrote to Heinlein in Colorado Springs, Colorado on January 22, 1961, explaining what I was doing. In the course of the letter I made statements very much like those which Ed Meskys remembers: "It is a touchy thing to work on moderns (writers)" I said, "for two reasons. First, many of them are still writing and there is no assurance that their most important contributions are behind them. Secondly, most of them are still alive and I am personally acquainted with them. While naturally, you don't select anyone to write about who isn't a top-grade performer to begin with, still, it seems to be human nature to resent any allusions to weaknesses even after you have spent thousands of words exalting their genius."

Weakly, Davidson rose to his feet, hands clasped to an aching and bleeding head. Tottering, he reeled to the door and with an effort, gazed upward. A tiny meteor-like moving speck was the object of his attention. Even as he looked, his mind cleared. The chaos of sound that roared in his ears and the true propensity of the disaster struck him like a cold sheet of water. They had stolen his creation. The labor of fifteen long years. Absolutely total destruction of the atom; until only pure energy remained. Those were the last thoughts of a wronged man. For as he faltered for the knob of the door, he stumbled and fell, overwork and injury extracted the extreme penalty, death! Out in the stratosphere a pair of reckless, daredevil murderers steered their tiny ship into outer space. As they gained the outer reaches of the atmosphere the ship gained in speed and rushed soundlessly along in the general direction of the moon. Six weeks later a pair of murdering thieves lay gasping out their last breaths of life. Too near death to repent, they could only wonder. Wonder why their tiny projectile continued its endless circle around the faraway Earth and all the while the powerful rockets continued their blasting. Even the greatest scientist on earth could not have told them why. Not knowing the facts of the case as it were, but dead Robert Davidson could have. For had the invention not sprung from his own fertile mind? The answer was simple. As everyone knows, rocket propulsion depends upon the rocket blast recoiling the ship from the gas particles ejected, which acts as the base or springboard. But Davidson had totally and absolutely destroyed matter. Liberating only pure energy force. Which although it worked well enough in the medium of air, proved futile in outer space because of the absolute destruction of matter, leaving not even gas particles.
