An abused childhood led Mootoo to stop using words for many, many years and thus she turned to a career that focused on the visual. Finally, after confronting her past, Mootoo returned to words and wrote her first collection of short stories entitled Out on Main Street . Her second book, Cereus Blooms at Night , is her first novel. "Mootoo is delighted to be called a 'Canadian' writer, although she was born in Ireland, raised in Trinidad and is of East Indian ancestry. The last thing she wants is to be known as is an Indo-Trinidadian-Irish-Canadian-lesbian writer" (Mootoo quoted by Gessell). She has also been careful not to label her writing as lesbian writing for fear of alienating potential customers disturbed by the political connotations of the word lesbian. Mootoo focuses on issues of authenticity and identity in both of her written works. There is something about Shani Mootoo's playful style that keeps us glued to the story of Mala Ramchandin, the mysterious old woman at the rest home who may or may not have committed a terrible crime. Her caretaker, a gentle gay man named Tyler, her eccentric lover, her lover's son who is a girl, her cruel father and her vanished lesbian mother populate a novel suffused with tropical dampness in the imaginary town of Paradise, Lantanacamara. Everything melts in the heat and rots and still grows two feet a day. The novel's central symbol is the gorgeous white flowered cereus plant, which blooms only at night and has two smells a vanilla-like sweetness and a horrible curdling. This is much like Mala, born with fragrant hope and doomed to a life of blood, madness and decomposition. Cereus Blooms at Night is like the garden of Eden, except clogged with insects. It is full of glistening snail trails, moths, lizard eggs, wood lice and daddy long-legs, but none of these creepy crawlies would matter if human tragedy could be kept at bay.

Reviewed by Joanne Saul Home in Shani Mootoo's first novel, Cereus Blooms at Night (nominated for a Giller Prize), is a fictional island in the Caribbean called Lantanacamara. In this novel, Mootoo explores the intense sense of homelessness that accompanies a history of colonial dispossession and exile. The main characters in the book are descendants of Indian indentured workers who convert to Christianity with the "encouragement" of Christian missionaries from the aptly-named metropolis, the Northern Shivering Wetlands. Although the movement to and from the colonial "centre" recurs throughout much of the novel, the multiple levels of the story unfold in a small town ironically called Paradise. The primary narrator of the novel, Tyler, a nurse at the Paradise Alms House, tells us his purpose in setting down events is to try to reach Asha Ramchandin, last heard of in Canada. As the novel progresses, the story of Mala, Asha's sister, slowly and luxuriously unfolds. Mootoo uses a self-conscious narrator, Tyler, in order to remind the reader of the pitfalls of omniscience, and of the difficulties of "fashioning a single garment out of myriad parts." However, the narrative tends to shift rather unconvincingly, so that it is not always clear from where Tyler gathers his "myriad parts."
