    Extractions: Mishima is an anomaly, not only within his own cultural context, but from an international point of view as well. Often regarded as a champion of right-wing extremism who committed ritual suicide in protest at the decline of "Japanese" values, he is far too complicated a figure to be dismissed so lightly. Far from upholding the established values, Mishima burst onto the literary scene with Kinjiki (Forbidden Colours), a deeply shocking and iconoclastic novel. In it, he breaks the taboo on discussing Japanese homosexuality (giving a frank, unabashed account of promiscuous homosexual behaviour) and exposes the hypocrisy and hidden lives of supposedly "respectable" members of society - and does so in a style more reminiscent of Oscar Wilde (whom he greatly admired) than of the traditional Japanese masters: "Somehow Shunsuke found himself joyfully waving a paper flag. A cameraman happened to be passing at that moment and caught him, so Shunsuke's picture appeared prominently in the newspapers, waving the flag. Who could have known? Here was this eccentric author waving a flag, sending off a soldier to die on the battlefield - the very battlefield on which had recently died the detested young soldier whose death he was really celebrating!"     Extractions: Seppuku and Jisatsu in Modern Japanese Literature By Daniel Brown November 13, 1997 Suicides in the texts of modern Japanese literature, according to Alan Wolfe in his essay "From Seppuku to Jisatsu: Suicide as a National Allegory," take on two distinctive forms. The first of these forms is the traditional ritual suicide called seppuku . Yukio Mishima, who not only wrote about seppuku but also performed it, recently glamorized this type of suicide. Seppuku is a ritual death rite with an ancient history in Japanese culture. The opposing type of suicide is the modern, intellectual suicide referred to as jisatsu . In Japanese literature, the best known of this type of suicide is committed by the sensei in Natsume Soseki's Kokoro . Jisatsu is a result of alienation and the fragmentation of society caused by modernization. Both seppuku and jisatsu are two differing suicide forms separated by motive and process, yet the distinction between the two is unclear due to anachronistic persuasions caused by conflict between modernization and the legacy of the Emperor. The act of seppuku involves the insertion of a blade into one's own stomach. The person performing the suicide then continues by cutting across the length of the abdomen. The act is finished after an assistant finishes the suicide by cutting off the dying person's head. Seppuku has been a sacred ceremony since ancient Japan that has been reserved for the privileged samurai class. It was used to follow one's lord in death as an act of loyalty and dignity and also as a means of redeeming failure through an honorable death. In modern Japan, the act of killing oneself has taken on different forms and meanings. Seppuku in modern times has taken an anti-modern stance as evidenced by Yukio Mishima's literary characters and his own theatrical suicide.

At the age of 45, Mishima ended his own life by performing a Japanese suicide rite known as seppuku or hari-kiri. Traditionally reserved for the samurai class, it involves self-disembowelment and ends with decapitation. As much has been written about Mishima’s gruesome and controversial death as about his literary accomplishments. Many critics and Mishima followers have speculated on the reason for his suicide. Some claim the author was an extremist, who lived in pursuit of ideal beauty, and in his eyes death was the penultimate form of beauty and only in death could he become complete. Others allege that Mishima was thoroughly infatuated by death, terror and the way of the samurai, themes which echo throughout his many works. And thus chose seppuku as a final tribute to the spirit of the samurai. Others still, believe his suicide was a political act intended as a protest against the Japan’s post WWII constitution, which he believed had stolen the soul of traditional of his homeland. Whatever reason lay behind his suicide, Mishima’s legacy lies in his tremendous body of work. Over his lifetime Mishima completed 20 novels, 13 articles, 143 short stories, 21 full-length dramas and 31 one-act plays. Sickly as a boy, Mishima conditioned and strengthened his body with the daily practice of kendo and karate. In an interview he commented that he worked hard on his body because he intended to die before he was 50,and wanted to make sure he had a good-looking corpse.

    Extractions: WRITINGS Dojoji Death in Midsummer and Other Stories , Mishima uses the style of the Japanese Noh play to create an eerie and disturbing piece. Dojoji , and takes place in a secondhand furniture shop. The Dealer has organized a private auction for some very rich customers. He is selling a giant wardrobe, big enough to fit a double bed in. The Dealer explains that the wardrobe is up for auction because it belonged to one of the rich families who "has gone down a bit in the world" since the end of WWII, so they must sell their furniture. The wardrobe is very impressive, and soon the bidding hits three million Yen. However, just as the bidding reaches a climax, a woman enters the scene, bidding only three thousand Yen for the wardrobe. The Dealer and the rest of the audience ask her why she’s causing such a disturbance. The woman explains that she is Kiyoko, a dancer, and she knows the history of this particular wardrobe. It belonged to the Sakurayama family, and Mrs. Sakurayama allowed her lover, Yasushi, to live in it. Yasushi stayed there all day, every day, waiting to be called out by Mrs. Sakurayama. One day, Mr. Sakurayama heard a noise coming from the wardrobe, and he shot a gun into it over and over. Yasushi began screaming, and Mr. Sakurayama kept shooting "until the horrible screams finally died away and the blood came gushing through the crack under the wardrobe door." After her story, nobody wants to buy the wardrobe, but all of the men want to take the beautiful Kiyoko out to dinner. The audience departs, but Kiyoko stays to try to purchase the wardrobe. The Dealer won’t let her have it for her low price, so she tells him more about the story. Yasushi was also Kiyoko’s lover, and she thinks he left her not because of Mrs. Sakurayama, but because Kiyoko is too beautiful. She describes her surplus of beauty as being a "cogwheel" that is missing in her "machine." It seems like a strange metaphor to me: Having too much of something is like not having it at all? It’s interesting, and what’s even more interesting is how far out of his way Mishima seems to go to put in some industrialist references.
