Extractions: John Stuart Mill was born on May 20, 1806 in north London, the oldest of nine children. His father, James Mill, was a student of Jeremy Bentham, a radical utilitarian. John himself was accelerated through school and shared the company of many of his father's intellectual friends throughout his adolescence. In fact, young John was sent to France to live with Samuel Bentham, the brother of Jeremy. It is often lamented that John lacked a childhood thanks to his father's intense drive of his son into the academic world. Indeed, soon after his education, John followed his father into a job at the East India Company where he remained in leadership positions until the company's demise in 1858. Mill's early writings and contributions to philosophy were published in two newspapers, The Traveller and The Morning Chronicle, both edited by associates of his friends. The radical philosophical journal Westminster Review served as another pulpit for Mill and a means to further elaborate on his views. Mill's Autobiography, completed shortly before his death in 1873, recounted the experiences that he had with the London Debating Society where his view were seen as being the product of an obsessive academic upbringing, with but more plain memorization than true philosophical thought. The experience he gained as a member of the society taught him the value of political philosophy not as a mode to create the ideal political system, but a means of determining the principles necessary to establish any successful governing system.

He was taught Greek at age three and Latin at age eight. By the time he reached young adulthood, John Stuart Mill was a formidable intellectual, albeit an emotionally depressed one. After recovering from a nervous breakdown, he departed from his Benthamite teachings to shape his own view of political economy. He wrote Principles of Political Economy, which became the leading economics textbook for forty years after it was written. In it Mill elaborated on the ideas of David Ricardo and Adam Smith. He helped develop the ideas of economies of scale, opportunity cost, and comparative advantage in trade. Mill was a strong believer in freedom, especially of speech and of thought. He defended freedom on two grounds. First, he argued, society's utility would be maximized if each person was free to make his or her own choices. (The "her" is particularly appropriate. Mill strongly believed, possibly due to the influence of his wife, Harriet Taylor, whom he idolized, that women were the equals of men. His book The Subjection of Women attacked the contemporary view of women's inherent inferiority.) Second, Mill believed that freedom was required for each person's development as a whole person. Extractions: John Stuart Mill was an English philosopher who is remembered for having developed the modern ethical theory of utilitarianism, based upon the earlier work of Jeremy Bentham. According to Mill, actions could be best judged as moral or immoral based upon how well they fostered the greatest possible happiness for the greatest number of people. Mill was unusual in the sense that his parents did not raise him in a religious environment or to believe religious doctrines. Thus, he was never a believing Christian and could approach its claims without the baggage of disappointment and anger that often accompany those who believed at one time and later rejected it. In his 1887 book A System of Logic , Mill made an important but often unrecognized contribution to the development of modern sicence. It was not until after the publication of this work that scientists came to realize the importance of control groups in scientific experiments. Even today it is difficult to get people to understand the necessity of testing the presence of a cause against the absence of a cause - in the 19th century, that realization was even more uncommon.

Who shall decide when married people differ in opinion? Both cannot have their way, yet a decision one way or the other must be come to. There are, no doubt, women, as there are men, whom equality of consideration will not satisfy; with whom there is no peace while any will or wish is regarded but their own. Such persons are a proper subject for the law of divorce. They are only fit to live alone, and no human beings ought to be compelled to associate their lives with them. But the legal subordination tends to make such characters among women more, rather than less, frequent. If the man exerts his whole power, the woman is of course crushed: but if she is treated with indulgence, and permitted to assume power, there is no rule to set limits to her encroachments. The law, not determining her rights, but theoretically allowing her none at all, practically declares that the measure of what she has a right to, is what she can contrive to get.

This text is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN, released September 1993. dell@wiretap.spies.com CHAPTER I INTRODUCTORY T HE subject of this Essay is not the so-called Liberty of the Will, so unfortunately opposed to the misnamed doctrine of Philosophical Necessity; but Civil, or Social Liberty: the nature and limits of the power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual. A question seldom stated, and hardly ever discussed, in general terms, but which profoundly influences the practical controversies of the age by its latent presence, and is likely soon to make itself recognized as the vital question of the future. It is so far from being new, that, in a certain sense, it has divided mankind, almost from the remotest ages, but in the stage of progress into which the more civilized portions of the species have now entered, it presents itself under new conditions, and requires a different and more fundamental treatment. No society in which these liberties are not, on the whole, respected, is free, whatever may be its form of government; and none is completely free in which they do not exist absolute and unqualified. The only freedom which deserves the name, is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it. Each is the proper guardian of his own health, whether bodily, or mental or spiritual. Mankind are greater gainers by suffering each other to live as seems good to themselves, than by compelling each to live as seems good to the rest.

James Mill was educated in Edinburgh by Sir John Stuart of Fettercain and was licensed to preach in 1798. He came to London in 1802 and supported his family by writing. He became editor of the "Literary Journal" in 1803 and the "St James Chronical" in 1805, he also wrote for the "Edinburgh Review" 1808-1813. In 1808 he met Jeremy Bentham and was converted to his utilitarian philosophy. He abandoned theology and took an active part in the Bell and Lancaster educational controversy, supporting the Lancastrian institution. He formed an association to set up a Chrestomathic school in 1814, the outcome of this being the formation of the London University in 1825. He also contributed articles to the "Westminster Review" which was started as the official Benthamite paper.
