Michaux explored the inner self and human suffering through dreams, fantasies, and drug-induced experiments. His suggestive prose poems are often narrated in the first person and warn and advice the reader. However, Michaux leaves the question open, whether his images - steel prisons, labyrinths, slashing sounds, demons, dragons, snakes, camels and other animals - refer to the unconscious or outside world. LABYRINTHE Labyrinthe, la vie, labyrinthe, la mort Henri Michaux was born in Namur as the son of a catholic lawyer. He was educated at Putte-Grasheide and at a Jesuit school in Brussels. Michaux intended to join the priesthood but was dissuaded from this by his father. After a religious crisis, Michaux started his medical studies at Brussels University. Rebelling against his parents wishes, he dropped his studies and traveled in North and South America as a ship's stoker in the French Merchant Marines. Later Michaux's journeys led him to Africa, India and China. In 1923 Michaux started to write for the magazine Le Disque Vert, but when his parents did not approve his way of livin, he moved to Paris. In Paris Michaux supported himself by working as a teacher and secretary. He began to paint - especially he became interested in the works of Paul Klee, Max Ernst, Giorgio Chirico, and Salvador Dali. Extractions: Index Après une adolescence toute de solitude, de repli et de refus, il pense à entrer dans les ordres, abandonne ses études de médecine (1919) et navigue plusieurs mois comme matelot. La découverte de l'oeuvre de Lautréamont (1922) et de la peinture de Klee, Ernst et Chirico (1925) fait naître chez lui le besoin de s'exprimer. Il écrit et se lance à l'aventure de l'exploration du monde (hauts sommets de l'Equateur, descente de l'Amazone en pirogue, voyages sur les pentes de volcans, en Indes, en Chine, au Japon...), peignant et dessinant. Sa peinture capte les images intérieures de L'Espace du dedans. Ses gouaches et aquarelles représentent des forêts vierges luxuriantes sur fond noir. Ensuite, son oeuvre se caractérise par des peintures à l'encre de Chine et des dessins mescaliniens; la mescaline est une des substances hallucinogènes dont Michaux fit une expérience systématique de 1956 à 1960. Revenu de ses "voyages d'expatriation", le fils de famille insoumis, attiré par Maldoror, s'exile en France. Il entreprend un long périple au pays du soi-même et multiplie les expériences d'auto-connaissance en marge des cercles littéraires. Il mène des expériences poétiques étranges dont la drogue n'est pas absente. Partisan d'une libération intégrale de la pensée et des mots, il s'est forgé un lexique personnel, incantatoire, violent, qui recrée un monde magique et transcrit les rêves qui le hantent ainsi que sa vision, volontairement déformée, du monde extérieur.

Son professeur de lettres le pousse vers la littérature mais il s'embarque comme matelot pendant deux ans. A son retour en 1922, il découvre "sursaut qui déclenche en lui le besoin d'écrire". Professeur de collège, il quitte son pays et voyage,"voyage contre", pour se libérer de ses attaches, des voyages de toutes sortes, en Asie, en Amérique du Sud. Ecuador Un Barbare en Asie Voyage en Grande Garabagne (1936). Mais en 1935, avec La Nuit remue , c'est dans son monde intérieur que Michaux s'aventure. Déçu par les salons littéraires parisiens, par ses voyages, il choisit" l'espace du dedans". Il s'occupe de revues littéraires, découvre le dessin et la peinture. Michaux essaie sous contrôle médical des substances hallucinogènes, mais finalement"les drogues nous enuient - dit-il - avec leur paradis..." Il rêve d'une oeuvre qui n'ait"ni thèmes, ni développements, ni construction, ni méthode", une oeuvre en marge des genres littéraires, dans laquelle"la phrase est le passage d'un point de pensée à un autre point de pensée". Extractions: HENRI MICHAUX (1899-1984) Belgian-French painter and poet, Michaux was born in Namur, Belgium and studied medicine at Brussels University. After a stint in the merchant navy Michaux began writing in 1922. In 1924 he moved to Paris and after seeing works by Klee, de Chirico and Max Ernst produced his first oil paintings. After a period of extensive travel, chronicled in the books Ecuador and A Barbarian in Asia , Michaux began exhibiting extensively in Paris galleries while continuing to write prolifically. In 1960 he won the Einaudi Prize at the Venice Biennale and in 1965 he was awarded the Grand Prix National des Lettres in recognition of his services to painting and literature, but he refused to accept it. Michaux is not easy to classify, either as an artist or as a poet. His twin oeuvres are completely individual and do not fit into any of the established artistic categories.
