Extractions: Anansi Press Meet Tracey Berkowitz. Fifteen. No tits. Naked under a shower curtain, sitting at the back of the bus, looking for her lost little brother. Is this kid serial killer bait, or what? That's the kind of information you get and conclusions you jump to with Maureen Medved's The Tracey Fragments. Tracey has got some wild stories to tell you. And they're told in an entirely engaging style by Medved, who delivers fragments of the whole sordid story. On one hand we have Tracey's parents - Mom's a clinically depressed TV junkie, Dad's a failed junk bond dealer. Are they loving parents who want nothing but happiness for their girl and fear for her safety in a dangerous world? Or are they the mind-game-playing, overprotective ogres Tracey sees? Then there's Tracey's shrink. Is the doctor really that cold? Or is it professional detachment? Role models are a hit parade of losers; Tracey's Baba is a street whore. Then there's little brother Sonny, who Tracey has hypnotized into thinking he's a dog. We don't know what to make of these characters, because in The Tracey Fragments, that's what we get: fragments of Tracey's life.

Extractions: House of Anansi Press, 149 pp. "I'm so happy. Have an amazing life. Now I'm going to scratch my eyes out." Maureen Medved gets in your face with the first paragraph and stays there until the last word. This is raw, angry, explosive writing at its very best. It captures the chaotic angst of a teenage girl on the street without getting bogged down by the baggage that usually comes with that voice. Tracey (aka "the girl with no tits") sits wrapped in an old shower curtain at the back of a bus, during a blizzard, telling stories that shatter against each other, leaving little standing at the end. She creates an autobiography out of delusion, panic and self-contempt, but it is an autobiography in which the center keeps shifting. The "real" Tracey deliberately eludes definition, offering conflicting fragments instead of a whole. There is the street-smart teen bragging about her boyfriend, Billy Speed; the loser she calls "It" who is mocked by her peers; the daughter of parents who are too scared to leave the house; the sister to Sonny who she hypnotized into thinking he's a dog; the granddaughter of a whore raped by a Polish horseman; the rebel; the lunatic; and the scared child. Each Tracey has a story that contradicts the others, and each story is true to the Tracey who tells it. While this may sound like yet another book of postmodern drivel, there is a difference: The Tracey Fragments has substance. Instead of indulging in theoretical navel-gazing in the guise of a novel, Medved has actually written a book that rings truer than the sum of its parts. What seems ridiculous or histrionic when taken out of context, comes across as genuine when read on its own terms. It is a challenging book well worth the effort.

TheTracey Fragments By maureen medved Anansi Press, $14.95, 149 pages. http://www.metroactive.com/papers/sfmetro/09.27.99/books-9937.html
Extractions: Anansi Press, $14.95, 149 pages Occasionally The Tracey Fragments Canadian author Maureen Medved's novel about a troubled teenhas an oddly poetic moment. Unfortunately these moments don't counterbalance the book's flaws. Medved goes for the jugular a little too often, clubbing the reader with the DRAMA of a particular moment with clumsy tricks like all capital letters. The protagonist, Tracey Berkowitz, is definitely having a rough time. The adults are out to get her, her little brother has disappeared, her break with virginity is highly unpleasant. The problem is that after a while the relentlessness of her suffering makes for a boring read. A little black humor would go a long way toward making The Tracey Fragments more interesting. Extractions: Curious blurb readers who pick up Maureen Medved's first novel, The Tracey Fragments, will find Robert Kroetsch telling them that Medved is a 21st century Canadian writer whose language "is a celebration via fireworks". The language of Medved's narrator, fifteen-year-old Tracey Berkowitz (who renames herself variously "Estuary Palomino", "the girl with no tits", or just "It"), is explosive because it is born from a generation of experience so new that it is still being freshly gathered into art and coming out as "an emergency". Tracey yells at us in capital letters; sometimes her voice falls, heart-broken, into single-word lines. Her disturbingly candid and witty disclosures lead us, surprised, into rooms we don't want to go into: what could be downtown Vancouver strip bars where old ladies roll around on little blankets with dirty, tattered stuffed animals; her parents' television-governed home, where she is sure they are trying to murder her with Velveeta. It sounds unsavoury, but before you turn away from such a read as you might from a street kid crouched in a doorway, you should be aware that Tracey's encounters are familiar to a whole generation, not just a subculture of it. Tracey is part product of "or whatever": our culture's growing indifferent and indefinite sentiment. But she is also part pioneer, pushing desperately for the spiritual.
