Independent, stubborn, with a strong tendency to bully, McLuhan was not a good student at school. He was admitted to grade seven only after the efforts of his mother. McLuhan entered in 1928 the University of Manitoba, where he studied English, geology, history, Latin, astronomy, economics, and psychology. In 1933 he obtained his bachelor's degree and won a University Gold Medal in Arts and Science. In 1934 he went to England, where he spent to years at Trinity Hall at Cambridge University. Later he said that Cambridge was at that time full of homosexuals, but he also spoke of these years as the great years of his life.

Percept advances and recedes like a gestalt, with a foreground and a background, attuned to depth. Marshall McLuhan was the first person to popularize the concept of a global village, and to predict its social effects. His insights fundamentally changed how everyone has thought about media, technology, and communications ever since. He chose the phrase "global village" to highlight his insight that an electronic nervous system was rapidly integrating the planet, so that events in one part of the world could be experienced in real-time from other parts, which is what human experience was like when we lived in small villages. McLuhan's second best known insight is summarized in the expression "the medium is the message", which means that the qualities of a medium have as much effect as the information. For example, reading a description of a scene has a very different effect on someone than hearing about it, or seeing a picture of it, or watching a black and white video, or watching a colour video. McLuhan was particularly fascinated by the medium of television, calling it a "cool" medium, noting its soporific effect on viewers. Baby boomers watch in amazement as the revolutionary impacts of television collide with the effects of the networked medium. The Oxford English Dictionary lists 346 references to McLuhan. Doherty, Jr. doherm@rpi.edu The other day, I was skimming several hundred e-mail messages that accumulated while I was offline in August and found myself fascinated by a conversation taking place on chortt-L (Computers in Humanities: Overcoming Resistance to Teaching with Technology), in which colleagues were discussing the particulars of titling a book chapter involving teaching in computer-mediated environments. One participant wrote, insistently, that the phrase "CMC" would be better replaced with "Cyberspace," as abbreviations are sometimes linguistic barriers. She contended, "with cyberspace in the title, at least our audience will know what we're talking about." It is her latter claim that is most intriguing to CMC professionals. When we say "cyberspace," do we in fact "know what we're talking about"? Michael Benedikt, author of Cyberspace: First Steps , takes a crack at an over-arching definition in his 1994 book: "Cyberspace: A word from the pen of William Gibson , science fiction writer, circa 1984 . . . A new universe, a parallel universe created and sustained by the world's computers and communication lines . . . The tablet become a page become a screen become a world, a virtual world . . . A common mental geography, built, in turn, by consensus and revolution, canon and experiment . . . Its corridors form wherever electricity runs with intelligence . . . The realm of pure information . . . "
