Extractions: This represents a summary of all books recommended, mostly in rec.arts.books, that I've saved the recommendation for. The list spans three years, and includes other book lists. The listings span the range from banned (or attempts made) books to those recommended for children, current bedside reading to books that changed someone's life. The only consistent feature of the books on this list is that someone posted on the net that they recommended it for some purpose. Almost all of the books present are ones I haven't read (which is probably what prompted me to save the note!) and some are books I've read and didn't like much. But, since others do, they're here. Extractions: The original Fairfax County Courthouse, built near the present Tysons Corner, likely marked the first European settlement in the Vienna area. Street names such as Old Courthouse Road and Lawyers Road still reflect that origin. Perhaps the first settler within the present town limits was Colonel Charles Broadwater, a prominent colonial soldier and public servant, who owned much of the land in the region and built his home here in 1754. In the 1760´s John Hunter, a native of Ayr County in Scotland, married Col. Broadwater's daughter. Partly by marriage and partly by purchase, he succeeded Col. Broadwater as the area's principal landowner. It was John Hunter who built the first house of record within the town in 1767 and called it Ayr Hill after his native land. As the village grew, it assumed the name Ayr Hill, by which it was known for a hundred years. Large estates were gradually lessened by sale or gifts. However, few houses were built in the village, and for a hundred years after the building of Ayr Hill there were scarcely more than eight houses in the town itself.

In the six years that I’ve been writing this column, this is the first time that I’ve been able to give an unqualified two thumbs up to a disc (or in this case, two discs). Stuart McLean is a Canadian icon; a funny man who can hold his own against any comedian you can name. His discs should contain a government warning: "Do Not listen to this recording while driving. Hazardous material. May cause hysterical laughter. CBC and/or Mr McLean not liable for any resulting flashbacks.” Then I heard "Dave Cooks the Turkey". This time I was in the parking lot at the St James Library, and laughing my socks off. Some guy knocked on my window and asked me if I was ever going to move. I said that I was sorry, and that I was listening to Stuart McLean. He said "Oh, is he on?" and just then a spot became vacant next to mine, so he pulled in. I could see him switch on the radio, and within moments his face was transformed from being resentful to being ecstatic. He looked over at me and gave me a thumbs up sign. We were buddies.

Extractions: These decorative objects are works of art based on McLean's interpretations of larger scale pieces. "I have loved miniatures of this scale since I was a child. My grandfather was inspired to make many pieces in this scale for his family and friends by a period cabinetmaker's sample slant front desk which he owned," says McLean. Through his relationship with his grandparents, McLean gained an interest in furniture and antiques. "Their great love was collecting antiques," McLean reflects. He bought his first pieces of furniture, a sideboard and serving table, while attending The University of Pennsylvania. He refinished both pieces in just three days. From that point on, McLean continued collecting throughout college, garnering 125 pieces of furniture by the time he graduated.

Extractions: On October 15, the Nature Trust held its Second Annual Dinner and Silent Auction fundraiser at the Halifax Sheraton. The event was attended by approximately 250 people who enjoyed a fine evening of dining, entertainment, and friendly competition at the auction table, while helping to support the conservation work of the Nature Trust. The evenings entertainment was provided by writer and CBC broadcaster, Stuart McLean . Before reading two of his humorous stories, Mr. McLean lauded the work of the Nature Trust and thanked the attendees for supporting this critical work. Then, with reference to the recent Nature Trust Birdathon, and to the presence in the audience of several members of the Nova Scotia Bird Society, Mr. McLean read his hilarious story Bird, which tells of the lengths to which some birders will go to tick off those annual oddities, even if they are found in some unsuspecting citizens backyard! After the audience had a chance to recover from the laughter, and Nature Trust President Rob McLeave had an opportunity to incite more action around the auction table, Mr. McLean read a second story with an animal theme, this time of the feline variety. It too had many people chuckling with laughter. As was the case last year, the auction benefited from the generous contributions of the many donors and purchasers. There were a wide variety of items donated, including a trip for two to Iceland, several bottles of fine wine, a pesticide-free Christmas tree, whale-watching and kayaking excursions, symphony and theatre tickets, and several limited edition art prints. There was spirited competition for a number of the items, and at least one generous supporter went home with more than a handful of treasures. The Nature Trust would once again like to thank all those people who contributed items, and all those who attended the event and helped make it a big success. We look forward to seeing you all again next year!
