During the first six weeks seminars will be divided between sessions on: 1) the writer—his works, the intellectual and artistic movements with which he was associated and 2) research skills—bibliography, methodology, and writing. By the end of the fifth week each student will submit in writing her/his proposed research topic. As of week seven, students will present their own work to the seminar group for discussion. One of the prominent figures of the Harlem Renaissance (see Blacks in the Americas) in black literature of the 1920s, he was known for his poems and novels of black life, first in Jamaica (Songs of Jamaica and Constab Ballads, both 1912) and later in the United States. After 1914 several of his poems were published in various American periodicals; they were primarily lyric works decrying injustice. After World War I (1914-1918) McKay lived in England and France and visited the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. He also served as an editor of and contributor to the left-wing periodicals The Liberator and The Masses. McKay's first novel, Home to Harlem (1928), a vivid picture of a black soldier's life in New York City after his return from World War I, was a popular success. Other novels by McKay include Banjo (1929), set on the waterfront of Marseille, and Banana Bottom (1933), about Jamaica. McKay's poetry and prose were notable for his use of traditional forms to express unfamiliar ideas and themes, many of which related to the black experience in the United States. He also wrote an autobiography, A Long Way from Home (1937), and a sociological study, Harlem: Negro Metropolis (1940). In 1942 he converted to Roman Catholicism and renounced his former left wing philosophy.

This approach allows students to relate to McKay on a purely human level and prepares them for the discomforting racial themes that dominate some of the other poems. Students respond to the persistent racism in American society. Some non-black students want to know why they have to read such poems. Many of them believe the poems are "for black people." Some students object to the eroticism of the love poems. "Flame-Heart" evokes the romantic tradition of Wordsworth and Shelley, poets whose work McKay admired greatly. This finely wrought poem, which expresses the poet's deep longing for Jamaica, his beloved homeland, highlights McKay's interest in nonracial themes. "A Red Flower," one of McKay's most striking love poems, features brilliant conceits similar to those found in the poetry of John Donne and other metaphysical poets. Identify the metaphor in the first and last stanzas of the poem. In "Flower of Love," McKay presents another example of his passionate, yet controlled, love poetry. Like "A Red Flower," "Flower of Love" turns on an elaborate conceit, recalling the best work of Andrew Marvell. Describe the poem's central metaphor and explain the reference to the South.

McKay’s most famous poem, “If We Must Die,” an eloquent and provocative sonnet, was inspired by the violent race riots that erupted in Chicago and other cities in 1919. In other deeply moving, carefully crafted poems, McKay voices his outrage at the treatment of blacks in a racist society. The poem “The Lynching,” for example, is a chilling indictment against the hatred and vigilantism which cost many black Americans their lives in the 1920s and 1930s. However, the social protest verse upon which McKay’s reputation as a poet ultimately rests represents only a small portion of his approximately two hundred published poems. Born in the Clarendon Hills of Jamaica, McKay began writing poetry in childhood. He published two books of dialect verse in 1912. In recognition of this achievement, the Jamaican Institute of Arts and Sciences awarded McKay a medal and a stipend that allowed him to study agriculture briefly at Tuskegee Institute and later at Kansas State University (1912–14). McKay left Kansas State in 1914 to pursue a writing career in New York City, where he became involved with the socialist movement and wrote for radical journals like Max Eastman’s

In 1912 his first volumes of poems, Songs of Jamaica and Constab Ballads, for which he was awarded the Silver Musgrave Medal of the Institute of Jamaica, were published. He migrated to the United States where he became one of the leading writers of the HARLEM NEGRO RENAISSANCE . In 1948 McKay died in Chicago and was buried in New York.
