In Appendix E of The Undiscovered Country I suggest that Alderamin in the constellation Cepheus might be the star Bernardo refers to ("yond same star that's westward from the pole") in Act I, Scene I. The best evidence for that speculation is the passage below, from Marcus Manilius' first-century Astronomicon, a Latin astronomical/astrological discourse in verse that was rediscovered in the 1400s and published in various editions, including three important ones edited by Joseph Scaliger in 1579, 1590, and 1600. (Appendix E has more information on Scaliger.) This passage (from Book V, lines 449-485 in Goold's edition) describes the characteristics of people born with Cepheus rising. (Rising signs were/are believed to predict a person's outward character, distinct from their inner self, which is determined by their sun sign.) The section reads like it was written to describe Shakespeare.

This dog had a long list of owners, one of them being Procris, daughter of King Erechtheus of Athens and wife of Cephalus, but accounts differ about how she came by it. In one version the dog was given to her by Artemis, goddess of hunting; but a more likely account says that it is the dog given by Zeus to Europa, whose son Minos, King of Crete, passed it on to Procris. The dog was presented to her along with a javelin that could never miss; this turned out to be an unlucky gift, for her husband Cephalus accidentally killed her with it while out hunting.

Manilius, tribune in 66, was a Pompeian and his fellow tribune Memmius was a supporter and also a relation of Pompey's. Manilius proposed legislation under which Pompey would receive the Mithridatic command. Cicero and Caesar both supported it. Q. Catulus opposed it on the grounds that it set an unconstitutional precedent, but to no avail. Cicero had been elected praetor and happened to be assigned the court de reputundis in which Licinius Macer, an ally of Crassus, was charged for extortion during his provincial govenorship. Cicero prided himself in conducting the trial in such a way that Crassus' monetary influence was not felt, and that won popular support. (Ad Att. I.4.) Macer, facing conviction, committed suicide. Stockton reads the trial as marking a new stage in the hostility between Crassus and Cicero that was to mark their careers. Cicero, at this point in his career at least, was on good terms with Antonius and used his influence to help elect Antonius, who had been expelled from the Senate in 70, and with whom he would later serve as consul.

I have used the chart of President Grant because I feel his life path was quite different from what he said he wanted for himself, and the dwads speak to those differences. Click here for Ulysses S. Grant's birth chart Many astrologers are familiar with a Hindu system of division of the sign of the zodiac into two and one half degree segments called dwadashamsas, or dwads. Manilius, a Latin astrologer born about the time of Jesus, was also aware of this type of division. He called the two and one half degree segments DODECATEMORIES, meaning the twelfth part of a sign. Manilius begins by describing the dodecatemories in much the same way as the generally accepted Hindu method. The first segment of a sign is ruled by the sign itself, the second by the next sign, and so on. Thus, the first two and one half degrees of Taurus are ruled by Taurus, and 22 1/2 to 25 degrees of Scorpio are ruled by Leo. Practice will make this calculation come naturally. One guide is that the dodecatemory which begins a decanate is always ruled by a sign of the same element as the sign in which you are working.

The ancient astrologers were no different and some of them have passed down patterns which are as new as this article and as old as time. Marcus Manilius was a Roman astrologer, born about the time of Christ. He based his poetic astrological work on foundations of Greek thought, for the most part, producing ASTRONOMICA. Manilius considers all aspects of chart erection and delineation. He demonstrates his thorough knowledge of astronomy and astrology throughout his discussion. He states that the earth is a sphere and he uses two arguments to support this idea: the behavior of the constellations and the path and progress of the Moon's shadow on the earth during solar eclipses. "Manilius allots the decanates (or decans - ten degree divisions of the zodiac) to the signs of the zodiac. He assigns the first decanate of the zodiac to Aries. The next ten degrees go to Taurus then to Gemini. The sign of Taurus gets decanate rulership from the signs Cancer, Leo and Virgo. This pattern continues until the last decanate of Pisces finds Pisces for its ruler.

We know this in terms of understanding what the houses mean, but it equally applies to understanding the history, philosophy and symbolic basis of the method of division used. With the variety of house systems available, all astrologers face the dilemma of choosing which method to adopt and understanding the reasons why. The only hard fact to guide them is that each system has a merit of its own; beyond that, the question of which house system works best is sensitive to so much subjective reasoning and variations of interpretative style that it would be impossible to prove. Despite this, many astrologers have sought to establish that their selected method is the 'pure' system to which others can be considered corruptions. Often this is based on an attempt to claim insight into the original system as verified in the work of Ptolemy, even though Ptolemy's work suggests a personal disregard to the use of houses generally and within the Tetrabiblos they are barely mentioned. However, tracing the development of house construction from its earliest sources does offer an illuminating path through which we can monitor the recognition of inherent technical difficulties, and the subsequent attempts to resolve them in alternative calculation methods.
