Dans le secteur public, Ken a été doyen par intérim et directeur du programme de vulgarisation et des affaires communautaires du University College of Cape Breton, coordonnateur de la formation technique pour la région du cap Breton et professeur de sciences pendant dix ans dans une école secondaire de Halifax. Ken est aussi le principal artisan du programme menant au diplôme en technologie pédagogique au UCCB, programme faisant partie de la maîtrise en éducation et en technologie de l'information offerte en collaboration avec l'Université Memorial de Terre-Neuve. Ken enseigne plusieurs cours en direct dans le cadre de ce programme. Ken détient un baccalauréat en sciences et en éducation, une maîtrise en administration scolaire et un doctorat en technologie informatique appliquée à l'éducation. The Cassini Division is set in a twenty-fourth century socialist society in which mankind has populated the solar system. There are pockets of resistance to the idea of the Solar Union, some of which, such as the non-cooperatives (non-co) outside of London, are tolerated. In addition, there are several groups of post-humans, such as the Jovians or the Outwarders, who have downloaded their brains into mechanical creations and are viewed by the Solar Union with xenophobia tending toward genocidal actions. The novel, in style and plot, is reminiscent of some of the later writings of Robert Heinlein or John Varley, although without the gender-swapping motifs. At the same time, the socialist values espoused on the surface (and the chapter titles) have a feeling of H.G. Wells to them. The novel, however, does not feel like anything Wells would have written.

Mit dem irreführenden Titel nebst einem Zitat von Kim Stanley Robinson auf dem Umschlagtext versucht der Verlag offenbar, an den langsam verebbenden Boom von Büchern anzuknüpfen, die den roten Planeten zum Thema haben. Ein Mann erwacht mit der Erinnerung an seinen Tod. Gestorben ist er auf der Erde am Ende des 21. Jahrhunderts. Von da an setzt sich die Handlung in zwei Zeitlinien fort: In der ersten wird die Geschichte von der Vergangenheit bis zur Gegenwart erzählt, in der zweiten erfährt man vom weiteren Schicksal des Helden. Zum Zeitpunkt seiner künstlichen Wiedergeburt befindet er sich auf dem besagten »Neuen Mars« in einer sehr fernen Zukunft. Eines der Hauptthemen des Romans ist die Möglichkeit, das Bewusstsein eines Menschen upzuloaden und beispielsweise in einem Roboter, einem Raumschiff oder einem Klon unterzubringen. Letzteres ist unserem Helden widerfahren. Im Grunde handelt es sich durch beide Zeitlinien hindurch um die Geschichte der Hassliebe zweier Männer, die dieselbe Frau lieben, und der Probleme, die sich daraus ergeben. David Reid, der Gegenspieler des Protagonisten, verfolgt das wahnwitzige Projekt, durch ein Wurmloch in einem fernen Sonnensystem eine neue Zivilisation entstehen zu lassen, Jonathan Wilde möchte das Paradies lieber auf Erden errichten. Während Jonathan Wilde am Ende scheitert und getötet wird, gelingt es David Reid, seinen Plan in die Tat umzusetzen und sich zum mächtigsten und reichsten Mann auf dem neuen Planeten aufzuschwingen. Der wiedererweckte Jonathan Wilde soll offenbar den Kampf mit diesem Despoten aufnehmen.

Besonders beeindruckend ist die Schilderung der christlichen Fundamentalisten sowie der Homosexuellen-Enklaven. Durch geschickt plazierte Hinweise erfährt der Leser auch, was außerhalb Großbritanniens vor sich geht. Glücklicherweise verzichtet der Autor auf lange historische Abrisse über den Dritten Weltkrieg, so daß es der Phantasie des Lesers überlassen bleibt, was vorgefallen ist. Nur eines steht fest: Afghanistan spielte eine wichtige Rolle. Zuletzt empfiehlt sich MacLeod seinem Publikum als Ideenautor: Die wahre Hoffnung jener zukünftigen Gesellschaft ruht auf künstlichen Intelligenzen, die einen virtuellen Krieg ausfechten. Ihr Ziel ist es, nachhaltigere Veränderungen zu bewirken, als es den Menschen möglich ist. Dieser im Grunde grandiose Einfall wirkt jedoch zu wenig ausgearbeitet. Like his other novels, it features murky socialist politics and dual storylines, taking place in the present and in the distant future. Unlike his other novels, it announces up front that it's the first in a series, and it introduces a whole batch of aliens, even though they are awfully familiar. It's an impressive beginning that's sure to hook fans of his other novels, and might just bring in a few more, with it's familiar use of spaceships and aliens. But those old SF tropes are only there to be used in the most unusual fashion. Ken Macleod has not lost his iconoclastic grip on writing science fiction that is first and foremost, social(ist) science fiction. 'Cosmonaut Keep' is indeed aptly titled. The reader is first introduced to Gregor Cairns and Elizabeth Harkness, students of marine biology on the world of Mingulay. They are studying the squid-like life with the help of Salasso, a vaguely reptilian Saur who bears more than a passing resemblance to what we would call a gray alien. The arrival of an interstellar trade ship harkens the beginning of a world of change for both of them. It's not a common event in Macleod's universe, starships don't zip between planets in a matter of days with the help of hyperdrive. They're bound by the relativistic universe, and a couple of years of travel on a starship will encompass a couple of hundred of years of planetary history. When they're there, the traders will engage in love, capitalism and politics to the best of their advantage. When they're gone, the world will change.
