Published first in 1947, it is a brilliant, moving, and complex novel, perhaps the last fictional masterpiece to emerge from the modernist movement. As the years went by, Lowry's obsessive rewriting took him further and further into his book, which changed relatively little in the outer semblance of action and main characters but became utterly transformed in texture from the thin and mediocre version of 1940 to the rich tapestry of 1947. Extractions: UBC has made a unique and exceptional addition to its Malcolm Lowry collection the largest in the world with the recent acquisition of Lowry's personal, first edition copy of his first novel Ultramarine, published in 1933. Lowry's most successful novel, Under the Volcano is ranked as one of the major English literary works of the 20th century. Lowry wrote it in North Vancouver where he lived for many years. "We already have the first edition of Under the Volcano and Ultramarine is the ultimate scholar's prize," says Prof. Sherrill Grace, head of the English Dept. The annotated copy of Ultramarine was acquired by UBC at the Pacific Book Auction in San Francisco for $14,000 (US). "It is a messy book, dog-eared and full of staples and scotch tape with pencil hand-writing all over it. It isn't very pretty," says Grace. "What we see in his copy of the book are the changes in his own writing which he never lived to complete." The small dark blue hardcover book has been professionally restored to preserve it.

He was the youngest of four sons bom to Arthur Osborne Lowry, cotton broker, and Evelyn Boden Lowry, with fourteen years between him and his oldest brother, and was treated as the baby of the family from the outset, which both set him apart and provoked his naturally bad temper. Gazing at the picture of my grandfather in the old nursery, I noticed for the first time how infinitely blue his eyes were, and slightly obscene; watery, as though he had never wiped the salt spray from them. `Why are you so dirty, Dana? My father was always so clean, so spruce. He had a master's certificate before he was twenty-three. When he came ashore he always came in a cab, and wore a top hat. He always wore a deerskin cap . . . He was an angel from heaven. He was bringing me a cockatoo.'(5) That `slightly obscene' look Lowdry placed in the old Captain's watery blue eyes was clearly a mark of affection bestowed on a much-loved creation. In his story `Through the Panama' he is a swashbuckling memory `recalled by Old Hands in Liverpool' for his pugnacity and seamanship, and in the posthumously published Dark as the Grave Wherein My Friend is Laid he is spun into a dramatic yarn worthy of a Conrad novel.

Extractions: 1996 Paul Tiessen Malcolm Lowry's La Mordida: A Scholarly Edition is an outstanding addition to Lowry's published work, thanks to the superb craftsmanship of Patrick A. McCarthy. La Mordida, concentrating on their incredible troubles with Mexican immigration authorities, finishes the story of Malcolm and Margerie Bonner Lowry's 1945-46 trip to Mexico (where Lowry had lived from 1936 to 1938), a story begun in Dark as the Grave Wherein My Friend Is Laid (published in 1968, edited by Douglas Day and Margerie Bonner Lowry). A quick comparison of La Mordida with Dark as the Grave reveals the strength of this production: it offers only the work, however incomplete, approved by Lowry. A 422-page typescript prepared by Margerie in 1952 provides McCarthy's basic copy text. That in turn is based partly on a 268-page pencil draft written by Lowry in 1947, partly on a missing intermediate draft as well as on eight notebooks. The copy text offers reasonably complete chapters only at intervals, especially at the start; otherwise, it is a series of notes in various stages of development, with a secondary layer of notes (including Margerie's) interrupting these from time to time. And there are many textual fragments from many sources, these intensifying the sense of a pastiche structure pointing towards postmodern performance; yet Lowry's underlying intent to provide a unified field of linked events, images, symbols, and theme reminds us of his modernist roots.
