Well, I did set a book in Cuba, half of a book in Italy, and opened another in the Dominican Republic. (Shame on you if those settings don't sound familiar; it means you haven't read the books.) Now Rwanda because I became fascinated with the idea of one of my characters witnessing the mass murder that took place there not so long ago. Soon enough the plot moves to Detroit, but it's Rwanda that sets the stage for the con games that take place in what has become my hometown.

Touched by the story, he wrote a play based on the novel for his fifth-grade classroom, using the desks as "No-Man's-Land." In high school he wrote a story or two for the school paper but spent most of his time reading. After graduating in 1943 Leonard joined the navy and served with a Seabee unit in the South Pacific. He left the service in 1946 and enrolled at the University of Detroit. At the university he began writing again, entering short story contests and placing third in one of them. He graduated in 1950 with a major in English and philosophy. In 1949, while still in college, Leonard joined the Campbell-Ewald advertising agency. He also began writing in earnest during this period. He had his first success in 1951 when Argosy Zane Grey Western and The Saturday Evening Post . In 1953 Leonard published his first novel, The Bounty Hunters , followed by four more over the next eight years. Between 1951 and 1961 he published 30 short stories, five novels, and made two sales to the movies. When his novel

Chili's new quest for a box-office smash, which involves a beautiful young singer, several shady music-business insiders, and an assortment of villains, reaches a level of comic surrealism that its predecessor only approached. This time, Chili knows from the beginning that he's going to turn his life into a movie. The loan shark turned producer becomes a kind of puppet master, staging real-life events to see how they'd work in a screenplay, orchestrating scenes, manipulating people as though they were big-screen characters. He knows there are folks who want to kill him, but what a movie it will all makeif only he can survive to the fade-out. This is a funnier novel than Get Shorty , too, chock-full of entertainment-industry in-jokes, and with a liberal supply of Leonard's always engaging characters and music-to-the-ears dialogue. Extractions: Elmore Leonard, concurrent with the publication of TISHOMINGO BLUES, his latest novel, succinctly describes what he does: "[I] gather an odd assortment of characters, build a story as they bump heads, and see what happens." This, of course, is a simplification, along the lines of gas meets engine and you get from Point A to Point B. Leonard's alchemy is much more than formula, but it is a good starting point for an analysis of what he does. It is not, however, an explanation of how, after 50 years, he continues to be so absolutely, breathtakingly masterful at it. TISHOMINGO BLUES focuses on Dennis Lenahan, an itinerant stunt diver who drives his 80 foot ladder and water tank across the South from place to place for (hopefully) extended engagements, where he exhibits his prowess at double flips and the like before plunging, straight and true, into the water (it is noteworthy that Lenahan's ability is somewhat similar to Leonard's, in that they both take the exceedingly difficult and make it appear to be easy, when in fact, we, the audience, know it is not). Lenahan has barely arrived in Tunica, Mississippi, "The Casino Capital of the South," for a three week engagement at the Tishomingo Hotel and Casino, when he attracts the unwelcome attentions of a diverse group of individuals, all of whom are working at cross-purposes to each other.
