Home Irish History The manager, Slan, Slane, Meath. Description Irish history. The former cottage of the Irish soldier poet, Francis Ledwidge is now a museum. It is located at Janeville, near Slane, a manorial village built where the N2 and N51 roads converge and meet. Facing each other on either side of the cross-roads are four splendid Georgian houses, the hub from which the village radiates outwards. An imposing view of slane castle can be seen from the bridge crossing the Boyne.

Thread Index Marco: Here's one Ledwidge site http://www.soluna.com/slane/ledwidge.htm Title: Untitled Document Francis Ledwidge Cottage Slane's own Francis Ledwidge was born in Slane in 1887 and raised in a small cottage that survives today as Ireland's only "poet's cottage" museum. The cottage is situated about half a mile east of the Village on the left hand side of the Drogheda Road (N51). The cottage was purchased through the tremendous efforts of local volunteers, including Pearl Baxter, as well as through donations obtained through cousins in the States. The cottage has four small rooms including some original and period furnishings in the bedroom and kitchen. The cottage evokes the simple life of the rural Irish while the displays of original manuscripts and the poetry itself proclaim the transcendence of one man's thought in verse. It is proof that humble surroundings, close family and day laborer's work can be the forge of a great soul. Ellie Vaughey Francis Ledgwidge wrote from a young age and at one point his work was recognized as brilliant by Lord Dunsany who became his patron. Lord Dunsany introduced Ledwidge to the Dublin Literary circle and he had his first volume of Fifty poems, entitled

Extractions: His father died young and Mrs. Ledwidge had to go to work in the fields to provide for her family. At one time the family were on the point of being evicted. The sheriff's men were only prevented in carrying out the order when the doctor attending the eldest son Patrick, who was suffering from tuberculosis, would not allow him to he shifted. His death was to have a profound effect on his younger brother Francis. When Francis grew up he became involved with the Meath Labour Union and in 1913, was appointed secretary. He used his position to champion the cause of the peasant workers. Up to that point, Ledwidge had worked as a farm labourer, as a road worker and even in the copper mine at Beaupare. It was at Beaupare in 1910, three years before the general strike and lock out, that Ledwidge tried to organise a strike for better conditions. Unfortunately, not one of the 100 strong workforce would stand by him and he was sacked for being a trouble maker. All things Irish appealed to Ledwidge; legends, folklore, music, sport, and he tried to set up a local branch of the Gaelic League. Many of his friends were prominent members of Sinn Fein; including Thomas Mac Donagh and Seamas O'Kelly. In 1914, he became leader of the Slane branch of the Volunteers. In June of that year he went to Manchester to rally support for the movement.

He left the local national school at the age of twelve and earned his living as a farm labourer and later as a road overseer. His early poems were published in the Drogheda Independent. In 1912 he sent some verses to Lord Dunsany, who encouraged him to continue writing. Although he became known as a poet, Ledwidge continued working as before, became secretary of the County Meath farm labourers union, and served on Navan District Council. In October 1914, although a convinced nationalist, he joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, to fight neither for a principle nor a people nor a law, but for the fields along the Boyne, for the birds and the blue skies over them.' He survived the Gallipoli landing but was killed in Belgium on 31 July 1917. His first collection, Songs of the Fields, was published in 1916 and the Complete Poems in 1919. Heaney, a poet from Northern Ireland, is writing about another poet who was from County Meath and who fought in World War One for Britain. IN MEMORIAM OF FRANCIS LEDWIDGE FRANCIS LEDWIDGE WAS A BRAVE SOLDIER AS HE WENT INTO WAR AS A BRITISH SOLDIER BUT PROTESTED AS HE WAS NOT RECOGNISED AS AN IRISH SOLDIER. HE THOGHT THAT HIS COUNTRY SHOULD NO LONGER BE RULED BY BRITAIN BUT AN INDIVIDUAL COUNTRY. HE WAS BRAVE IN SAYING THIS AS MOST PEOPLE WOULD HAVE STOOD ASIDE. WE KNOW HIS BODY MAY BE ACROSS THE COUNTRY BUT HIS SOUL WILL ALWAYS BE BY THE BOYNE. LUCY DOYLE (M.C.B) AND HELINA KEHOE (COLAISTE BRID) WE THINK THE REASON SEAMUS HEANEY CHOSE TO WRITE ABOUT FRANCIS LEDWIDGE IS THAT THEY WERE BOTH IRISH CATHOLICS. FRANCIS SEEMS TO BE UNHAPPY FIGHTING IN THE WAR. SEAMUS HEANEY WRITES JENNY MINFORD (M.C.B) ANDJULIE KENNEDY (COLAISTE BRID) THE FIRST TWO STANZAS GIVE THE IMPRESSION THAT THE POET FEELS THAT PEOPLE OF TODAY DO NOT GIVE MUCH THOUGHT TO LIFE DURING THE WAR AND THE EFFECT IT HAD ON THE IRISH PEOPLE INVOLVED. THE NEXT TWO STANZAS RECALL THE POETS MEMORY OF LIFE IN PORTSTEWART IN THE 40S AND HOW LIFE WAS CONTINUING AFTER THE WAR. THE NEXT COUPLE OF STANZAS GIVE US THE IMPRESSION THAT LIFE WAS DIFFERENT AND BEAUTIFUL IN THE COUNTRY TO LIFE AT WAR AND THE TRENCHES.
