Lansdale Mysterious Press/Warner Books, 328 pp., $24.95 Get this: I'm trying to pigeonhole Lansdale for the benefit of the uninformed, and all it's getting me is a cramp in my left hemisphere from all the free-association. Enough of that, already: Let's just call a spade a spade and agree that Joe Lansdale is the most consistently original and originally visceral writer the great state of Texas (or any other state, for that matter) has seen in a score of flashpoint summers. There. I'm off the soapbox. You can wash your hands now. Two new fall releases cement yet again Lansdale's fully developed place in the canon of genre fiction. Exactly what genre that may be is entirely up to the author's whims. Although branded early on with the now-defunct term "splatterpunk" (others from that stillborn movement included Ray Garton, John Skipp and Craig Spector, and Douglas E. Winter, most of whom, unlike Lansdale, have failed to maintain their initial popular velocity), Lansdale is as likely to pen a sci-fi tale or a magical young adult novel as he is an outright piece of horror fiction these days. His most popular works to date have been a series of novels featuring the occasionally hideous, often hilarious misadventures of a pair of East Texas working stiffs by the name of Hap Collins and Leonard Pine. What all this goes to show is that Lansdale, like the best writers of this century, cares more about the tale than the teller. He's all over the map, sure, but what a helluva map.

If I had only one hour to cram some foreign visitor full of the real poop about the USA, I'm not sure I wouldn't sit them down in front of the TV to watch a couple episodes of "Cops", with a Stroh's on the coffee table and this book to read during the commercials. This novel is as powerful, undeniable, and real as a sidekick to the solar plexus; it is altogether an astonishing accomplishment, and delivered without any of the phony attitude of the media-whore or the academic observer yet another proof, if one were needed, that New York is not the cradle of all that is cultural in the USA. Hap is pulled out of the rose fields where he toils as a field hand (and you'll never again be able to buy a rose bush without a qualm after the first page of the book) by his best friend Leonard Pine, whose uncle has just died. Heureusement, parce que sinon c'est voyage au bout de l'horreur. Cette bourgade de ploucs texans ferait passer les tarés de Délivrance pour des êtres civilisés, et les pitbulls de Mégret et Le Pen pour de délicats démocrates. C'est effrayant, plongée au coeur d'un monde où visiblement la nouvelle de la fin de l'esclavage n'est pas arrivée. Lansdale rend superbement la panique de Hap et Leonard quand ils se rendent compte à quel point ils sont coupés du reste du monde, à quel point les lois, les règles, ne s'appliquent pas dans ce coin des US. A quel point deux individus, même très combatifs et courageux ne peuvent pas aller à l'encontre de toute une ville. Effrayant, superbe, indispensable. Autre critique , son Mambo des deux ours (SN2592), qui date un peu (octobre 2000) est vraiment le polar ricain tel que je laime. Cynique, noir et désopilant. On est à mi-chemin de Pelecanos pour la noirceur et de Hiaasen pour le délire. Ses deux personnages fétiches, Hap Collins, un Blanc bec revenu de tout, et Leonard Pine, un noir gay et pas commode, forment un tandem parfait, un genre dArme Fatale inverti et déjanté. Latmosphère et lourde, moite et pesante mais cest surtout lhumour, parfois volontiers scato, qui sauve tout et on se retrouve souvent à rire comme un idiot. Lansdale sen donne à cur joie dans les métaphores foireuses dont voici un exemple parmi beaucoup dautres : " Le frigo ronflait désespérément comme un mourant essayant de se souvenir dune chanson sentimentale ". Et, last but not least, la traduction de Bernard Blanc est impeccable.

Once Lansdale, through his mapping of the scattered minds of his irksome duo of drop-out walking,talking disaster- areas Hap and Leonard - gets the story well underway there is no stopping his wild and woolly narrative, his rampant no-holds-barred vim and vigour.The series are often laugh-out-loud male-bonding unregenerate "b.s"./horse pucky that works beautifully as such.and as little more than pure foul-mouthed ‘adult’ entertainment without a single redeeming social value. CAPTAINS OUTRAGEOUS is no exception to the Law of Lansdale on the printed page. Lurid, preposterous and irresistible pure pulpery and poltroonery.
