Extractions: by Diana Kemp-Jones The Alternate Universe of Diana Kemp-Jones Page 1 of 6 Spectral eyes watched from the timelessness of the vast tank chamber. Imprisoned in their liquid tombs, the souls of the ancient Omoro kept vigil on the wondrous spectacle of their creation. Their voices whispered like the gentlest of breezes, their thoughts commingling. Below, in a mist-enshrouded chrysalis, their progeny slumbered. A precious creation of flesh and blood, a vital link to the past and the future, the time of awakening was drawing near. An echo of anticipation and excitement rippled through the tanks as the blue mist gradually began to clear within the chrysalis. A shape emerged, a shape that brought tears of joy to the phantom audience. In the tank of one whose essence inhabited a lower level, long forgotten emotions sprang from the shadow of time. As he observed the awakening, memories of his world, his people and the love he held for his children filled his spirit with elation. His jubilant voice rose and joined the welcoming chant of his kindred. Sparks of energy flickered in the tanks like legions of fantasmic butterflies. The millennia of waiting, the grinding tribulations of the past were quickly forgotten as a vision of hope and the shining promise of resurrection stirred before him.

Extractions: Common for all the stories is that the lead character is women. In many ways you can say that the stories isn't really about science fiction at all. Science fiction is just a setting for what I believe is the authors true intention behind all of these short stories, namely discussing women's position within the different future societies. Well, maybe not only in future societies, but also issues that is just as relevant in todays world.

He rubbed his shiny, balding skull; his tongue nervously flitting across perennially chapped lips. Thick-framed glasses magnified his eyes as they fixed on the blinds. Taking a swig of beer from a can, he rose from the overstuffed couch and wiped his sweaty palms on his faded jeans, the latest Hollywood scandal powerless to keep his attention on the harshly tinted newscaster. Shuffling toward the window, the cheap battery wall clock relentlessly kept pace as he crossed the darkened room. He hesitated before peering through the blinds, his fingers imprinting the caked dust. Almost on cue, the sweeping floor to ceiling windows of the sixth floor condominium across the street dimly lit up. Graceful Art Deco chandeliers starkly contrasted the elegant, tastefully furnished rooms. He inhaled sharply as a woman entered with her guests, a cherubic blonde nymphet and a beefy steroid jock. She smiled and petted the pair as though they were family pets.

Extractions: SISTERS OF THE WIND by Diana Kemp-Jones is a breathtaking collection of fifteen science fiction stories united by themes of strong women rising to meet extraordinary challenges. Meet the powerful woman behind the collection. CP: You write science fiction short stories with a unique flare that I find remarkable. Tell me what inspired your collection of stories, SISTERS OF THE WIND? Diana: Though I've been writing since I was a child, I began seriously writing short stories in the late 80's as part of a course with the London School of Journalism. One story lead to another until I had produced a number of collections, though until recently, I never even realized I had focused so often on the strong woman theme. Inspired no doubt by some of my own experiences, I felt that I had the potential to create and interesting and appealing work, so I chose what I considered the most appropriate stories. CP: Everyone always has a favorite with such a diverse collection of stories. Tell me which is your personal favorite and what inspired it? Diana: "The Cull" always has and always will be my favorite, mostly because I see Seladon as my dynamic alter ego. We all conjure images of how we would ideally be, and she comprises the qualities I admire. She's not perfect, mind you, but she is a woman who has overcome daunting challenges and who ultimately follows her heart. I see a parallel with my own desire to write and my decision to follow my heart rather than abide by the more typical expectations of those around me.
Extractions: Very highly recommended SISTERS OF THE WIND by Diana Kemp-Jones is a breathtaking collection of fifteen science fiction stories united by themes of strong women rising to meet extraordinary challenges. With grace and panache, Kemp-Jones presents an amazingly unified collection of fifteen short stories that will challenge the reader's perceptions of the future. The future has degenerated into fierce control or its alternative chaos, depending upon which planet you inhabit. But in all cases, personal liberty has been curtailed and it takes an extraordinary show of spirit to effect change. On one hand, meet independent young women like Janaar in "Debutante", who refuses to submit to her society's demands, choosing rebellion that potentially leads to change in her whole world. Or meet young Nataya in "Donors" who becomes the leader of children to a New World. On the other hand, meet starship captain Saladon who risks death to save a planet from annihilation. Despite the pronounced differences in time and place between the world as we know it, and the world of Kemp-Jones' imaginative tale. Many themes are extremely contemporary. Universal questions such as how to balance between family and worldly responsibility dominate several stories. Raising children and the defiance of what is ethically wrong verses the celebration of what is ethically right also dominate many stories, including "Devil in the Heart," "Imarad," and "Mantris."
