And although the frightened worshippers several times before had been the object of pranks by Navy soldiers pouring gunpowder down the chimney, this disturbance appeared to be more serious. Only the utmost efforts of John Livingston, an influential citizen, succeeded in dispersing the mob and restoring calm. When the congregation brought a grievance before the local judges, it in turn was accused of inciting anti-Catholic feelings through the sermons of its minister John Jones. The Rev. Walter Price, If any among the Catholic rioters felt that their assault might receive the blessing of the Church, they were quickly told differently by the new superior of the Catholic mission in Newfoundland. Jazz vocalist Betty Carter restlessly paced her three-story brownstone home. A number of awards flanked her living room, from a Washington, D.C., salutation declaring a Betty Carter Day to an Indy award naming Bet-Car the nation's best independent label in 1981. The only thing missing was a Grammy, a conspicuously glaring omission for a performer both Carmen McRae and Sarah Vaughan have called the greatest pure jazz singer. Extractions: Along with the change to factory production was a basic shift in the source of energy, from human to steam. The industrial revolution was ultimately driven by steam-engines fueled by coal. As it progressed so did the demand for a plentiful and cheap source of coal energy. In America that source was bituminous coal, found in the Appalachian Mountains which run from Pennsylvania to northern Alabama. In Tennessee the portion of that mountain chain where coal is found is the Cumberland Plateau. It extends in a northeast and southwest direction across the state, forming the dividing line between Middle and East Tennessee. The Cumberland Plateau is divided into the northern and southern coal fields consisting of 21 counties. By comparison with Kentucky and West Virginia, the Cumberland Plateau is relatively poor in coal resources. Nevertheless, it was sufficiently rich enough to catch the attention of investors eager to cash in on fueling industrial growth. Coke, a residue of coal, was used as a fuel for iron production and became also a product of coal mining in Tennessee. Beehive coke ovens, so called because of their internal shape, were constructed around 1859 at the Tracy City location in Grundy County and at the Etna operation in Marion County. The remains of some are part of the state park at Tracy City, while others may be found in Dunlap [NR] and in Whiteside, Glen Mary, and Waldensia. Additionally, along the Cumberland River there were some small time operations which helped fuel the U.S. Navy gunboats during the Civil War.

Jones turns to Freud to show how the great Beat writer used the Oedipus myth to shape not only his individual works but also the entire body of his writing. Jones demonstrates that Maggie Cassidy, The Subterraneans, and Tristessa share a form that results from Kerouac's unresolved rivalry with his father for the love of his mother. He discusses Kerouac's replacement of the destructive brother figures in On the Road and Visions of Cody with the constructive hero of The Dharma Bums. He also shows how the Oedipal structure of the Duluoz Legend applies to Kerouac's nonfiction. In the penultimate chapter, Jones explains how Big Sur, Kerouac's story of his alcohol-induced nervous breakdown, actually marks the climax of the Duluoz Legend. The three were assigned to Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 5th Special Forces Group, but were under orders to Command & Control, MACV-SOG. MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observation Group) was a joint service high command unconventional warfare task force engaged in highly classified operations throughout Southeast Asia. The 5th Special Forces channelled personnel into MACV-SOG (although it was not a Special Forces group) through Special Operations Augmentation (SOA), which provided their "cover" while under secret orders to MACV-SOG. The teams performed deep penetration missions of strategic reconnaissance and interdiction which were called, depending on the time frame, "Shining Brass" or "Prairie Fire" missions. On October 3, 1966, Echevarria and his team were inserted into Laos near the border of the MR-1 region of South Vietnam (just west of the Demilitarized Zone), and immediately came under enemy fire, apparently surrounded by enemy troops. The team requested immediate extraction, but heavy gunfire prevented the helicopter from landing on the LZ. Williams and Bui Kim Tien were trying to evade capture. Tien, who was later rescued, reported that SFC Williams told him both Jones and Echevarria were seriously wounded, perhaps near death. On October 4, Williams and Bui spotted some caves, and Bui went forward to investigate them, at which point Tien was spotted by hostile forces and forced to leave the area. Tien later heard gunfire in the area, and believed that it was between SFC Williams and the enemy troops. Tien continued to evade for the rest of the day until he was picked up by friendly aircraft at 1500 hours. Ray Echevarria's photo was later identified as that of a prisoner of war by a defector. According to CIA analysts, this identification was an error, based on the report of Bui Kim Tien that Echevarria and Jones were near death. Tien was polygraphed, and his debrief is believed to be accurate. But still, doubts remain. The fact is, no one saw Echevarria, Williams and Jones die. With enemy so close, there is ample reason to believe they might have been captured. Since American involvement in Indochina ended, over 8000 reports of Americans still held captive have been received by the U.S. government. Of the nearly 600 American servicemen lost in Laos, not a single man has ever been released. The U.S. did not negotiate for the prisoners held in Laos. They were abandoned by the country they proudly served.

During a trip to New York for the film's premiere last fall, Jones sat down with NUVO and several other publications to discuss his love for the role - and of the film's gentle yet poignant message. NUVO: You had committed to Cry, the Beloved Country years before it was shot. At what point did you decide to take the role? Was it when you saw the script? JONES: Way before that. I had read the book years ago and had always wanted to be in it. My big question was: How would the gentleness - which I think is the key to my character - how would it go over with young black people? My main concern was that it not appear as something from the past, as a museum piece. I said, "When Mandela is freed, we'll see." My character mirrors Mandela's gentleness. When he was freed, I knew I would make this picture. Later, the script came along and I loved it. NUVO: How do you see the film in terms of race relations in America today? How do you think it will play with young people today in the wake of the Million Man March and the O.J. trial?
